They were cherry picking in these clips as I have seen the full videos. There are videos that address the men just the same way on hygiene, manners, and attractiveness. The majority of them really are not being sexist just to the girls. The boys get an earful too. If you watch these old videos they would encourage people to work together in family units being mindful of each other and the community at large, working productively, and balancing home life with work/school life. I think it is great that people used to put more pride in how they looked. It isn't pleasant walking around in public nowadays when people do not take pride in their appearance or hygiene quite often.
I don't feel like all of these things are sexist, more like just the tone it's conveyed it. Cause, I mean, eating right, showering, and wearing clean clothes are definitely important...
It's sexist when it's only adressed to women and women are told to do so to please men. It wouldn't be sexist if the advice was given to all genders. What's also sexist is to show a young man with a book as attractive and a young woman with a book unattractive.

I’ve seen a number of these PSAs/single reel “educational films” right here on TH-cam, and I gotta say, most of the clips chosen were pretty mild! There are other scenes which were easily more egregious than these. Also: I’d like to mirror what another commenter mentioned: it’s appreciated by almost everyone that people of all/any genders shower and wear clean undergarments.
2:18 Actually this is great advice in my opinion; don’t let your emotions be controlled by others people’s bad moods . Letting other people’s moods (drastically and constantly) alter your personal emotions is actually a sign of codependency, which is an unhealthy coping symptom often used by victims of abuse and/or trauma
I agree with your opinion and I totally understand it. But the only thing that turns me off with the situation shown is the fact that they just shoved the responsibility to the wife to remain as calm and collected as much as she can without telling the same thing to the husband. It is just okay if the husband shows some emotions like anger, but the wife is prohibited to do so. It's like they are trying to emphasize that women can not retaliate to men and instead of controlling their anger they will rather shove it to women to release their frustration. That's why domestic violence was quite common at that time. Again, it was never a good thing to add fuel to the fire, but the example given in the video just feels very sexist to me. It should be applied to both genders and not just to women.
@@wendyjung4616 Seriously! True nobody should lash out in anger but there are situations where it's ok to be angry. We're human and have emotions. This was just telling women to be compliant little dolls.

Parents, as authority figures and the examples the children emulate, should be capable of controlling their emotions. A calm parent exerts a calming influence on their children and is more capable of identifying the cause of upset and resolving conflict. In other words, act like an adult and not like a child's peer because you should be your child's parent not their friend.
@@johnstevens1575 Very much so, tho to an extent. Personally I think a parent needs to learn how to be their friend too to some small degree. Children are going to be children, they're not going to act as adults so a child would need to rely on a level of "friendship" from their parents to better relate the parents teaching to their childlike interaction with the world. Also, I personally have always welcomed parents making mistakes in front of their children AS LONG AS the adult apologizes and shows how to take responsibility and rectify things. It's one thing to teach a child what not to do, but it's another for the child to actively see what happens when something goes wrong AND how to be a better person about it.
@@fallen4life080 Parents have difficulty remaining authority figures and being respected when they blur the lines by being a friend. Making mistakes is normal, but is a teaching moment, but not all mistakes should involve an apology. Much of this is of course dependant upon the physical development of the child, their intellectual development, and there age. You can be a friend to your child when they are mature enough to make adult decisions and are capable of accepting the consequences of their actions without being dependent upon their parents. Some are never raised from childhood into adulthood, never equipped by their parents with the resilience, willpower, and character necessary for success.
A lot of these aren’t sexist though. Like not wasting time and doing things like learning how to sew or something, that’s a great point. Regulation of your emotions is also a good thing for your mental well-being and the wellbeing of those around you. And showering/wearing clean clothes is important. Also looking nice DOES improve your confidence, though I can see how that one sounded a bit sexist, looking nice for the breadwinners isn’t a bad thing but they should love you no matter how you look.
Think you’ve missed the entire point. It’s a PSA made by males who feels the need to regulate females on what to do, what to say, and what to wear. Of course people shower regularly and take care of their own well-being, but why on earth should it be to satisfy men and their ideology on “what a woman should be”? That’s the sexist part. And why is there no PSA for men on what to wear, how to act, how to not “waste time”?
@@aethei8560 There WERE similar films for men, you dummy! So quick to take offence without checking your opinions / feelings vs fact. Just what the PSA advised against. A woman should be in control of her emotions.
I honestly, as a woman, find absolutely nothing wrong with this PSA. It was filled with well to do advice such as "don't monopolize the conversation because it will ruin the mood", "be sure to shower to rid yourself of accumulated dust and dry skin". Even the bit where it's mentioned, "we wouldn't be women if we didn't worry about our size" is an accurate bit. As females, we should want to be beautiful and our figure is a part of that. No two women are the same so what's a "good figure" and size differs from one to another. However, it is still important to keep in shape and be healthy if possible. I'm so sick of women pretending someone telling you to take care of yourself is abuse
Some of it's worded a bit too directly for modern tastes and is obviously told from a patriarchal point of view, but it's better than the neglect, or on the other hand coddling, that passes for parenting nowadays.
Up until the family dinner portion, the advice wasn’t all that bad. It was delivered badly, but the advice itself was okay. But then we got to “don’t be emotional, dress up for the men of your family, watch what you eat to stay thin, etc.” 😬
Clean hygiene, healthy diet, make good use of your time, don't be a slop, don't be annoying, etc. These are all great advice for both men and women, boys and girls. None of these is "incredibly sexist".
Why does it always have to be taken so personally. These are all good things to do, maybe besides the you always need to look good for a man idea, but why not look good. Literally most of this is just "take care of yourself and don't be a goblin please"
"Its taken personally because many women in the west have a lot of trauma associated with past relationships and feminist propaganda makes them think doing things for men is anathema when really its just an expression of love for a partner, women without trauma are actually completely fine with it, also to be fair they are socializing the women to not express emotion which I disagree with as a man."
@@40stryder03 I agree, as a female it's okay that men are able to express on how they feel towards someone. As long they don't pressure their opinions on you. Because that can get out of hand. I'm not sure if this is what you mean though, I'm a bit confused on what you mean.

It’s said that people must be told this. Right? I assume it’s a daily requirement, but apparently not.

This was the cringiest thing in the video. If your brother or dad needs you to look pretty while they nosh on their meatloaf, find a new family. The rest I can overlook or even support to a point. But not that one, especially stated smugly by the male voiceover.

Interesting how it's up to women to make men act like a human....
Women used to be the civilizing influence on men's behavior. We had gentlemen because we had ladies first.
What are day time clothes? Did people wear clothes in the morning then changed to evening clothes then nightwear? Lol no ones got the time. Sorry if I have something to say, I’m gonna monopolize the conversation especially if it’s important.
Yes, families ate at 5:00 p.m. together, and all dressed for it.
SsSs RoBbSs no, they mean dinner clothes. Back then you dressed in cloths for school, clothes for play, dressed for dinner and then pj’s.
Back then a woman would wear whatever during the day, but put on a nice dress for dinner time, where the whole family would eat together. It wasn't like June Cleaver in a dress and pearls all day while vacumning. That's just on TV. They didn't wear pajama bottoms or leggings out in public. People cared about their appearance.
Imagine the laundry though
@@angelmartin7310 these multiple clothing was most likely followed only in the rich or well to do families because i don't think any other family would care about outside appearances this to such a great extent

@@degamispoudegamis, have you seen the whole videos? I've seen many of them and they're directed at everyone. They're, actually, very informative. One shouldn't take such short clips at face value as they may have been manipulated in that manner to seem that way.

Well yeah
The amusing thing is that someone thought that needed an informative video.
Really though what is wrong with encouraging women to take care of themselves and look presentable, men were encourage to do the exact same thing. Personally I much prefer how women use to dress to how we dress now, why are trainers, pants, and slouchy unfitted clothes any better for us. I also like how smart men use to dress.
I completely agree with you
Honestly both are okay trainers and pants are much more comfortable Tbh people can still do something to look elegant in them
Like I mean dresses and pants for women
Pants are way more practical though. I don’t like a lot of modern clothes but at least you can work in them.
I think women should take these PSAs to Heart
Shower so you don’t stink is still a good one, and we should all listen to it lol

let be honest I bet there are some people in this era who still believe that .

"notice how the mother becomes angry because of Jeff's anger......perhaps she shouldn't because, etc, etc"
Ah, so Jeff can get as emotional as he wants but mother can't? Where were the PSAs for men to not monopolize the conversation by talking about everything they know?
@@jacobgrafstrom1917 what does aging have to do with anything?
THANK YOU

Yes it’s absolutely sexist to tell women to not look sloppy, let someone else talk once in a while, and clean up your body! We should definitely strive to look like we got dressed in the dark, ramble on so everyone tunes us out and bathing yuck who needs it!!!! Sooo sexist. Sarcasm for those who did not understand that.
you’re missing the entire point that these tips aren’t intended so that a woman is a clean and affable person, these tips are so that women meet the mold that men of the time find desirable. Her socks need to be just so for the man, not for her, etc. The PSA intends to direct a woman’s actions for the fulfillment of the male gaze. Gross.
