No such a thing as too many ukuleles. Buy as many as you like and can afford. Than enjoy playing them all. I just added number eight, an acoustic / electric tenor strung high g. So I restrung my other tenor low g and really like the way it sounds. The third tenor in the group is a 5 string with high and low g. Great for strumming and finger picking the single strings is easy. The concert was my first serious Uke and I feel like it is the one I play best. The smaller fret board is easier on my mangled mechanic’s fingers. Which doesn’t stop me from really enjoying playing the baritone. The other 3 are the original plastic soprano that was my starter Uke. It hangs in a place of honor on my wall and gets used on occasion, mostly by grandkids. The U-bass I bought just out of curiosity and don’t play as much as I should. And an inexpensive solid wood electric was a gift and is really a toy. It barely counts so my total is 7 & 1/2.
Hi Marco, You left out the OG ukulele, the standard or soprano. Don't count those out, they can be tons of fun in a very small light package. Also, just to clarify, ANY instrument can be either High G or Low G and do give you a different experience. Switching between High and Low G feels like you have double the # of ukuleles. Nut width and spring spacing are two very important variables, too. Kala, Pono and many other brands do 1 3/8" nut width while others, including Kanilea and many KoAloha uses have 1 1/2" nut width --very comfortable if you have big hands. thanks for all your lessons.
Excellent point about any any instrument being tuned high or low. My Kala baritone was my least favorite until I tried reentrant tuning. Now it's one of my favorites. I bet Marco would like it as well !
Ukes are such a beautiful little instrument totally agree that it’s hard to just have one.
Current count is 16 of various sizes, materials, string types and tunings. Plus some with EQ, a fully electric and a Banjolele and a Guitalele. They bring joy to look at and to play❣️
I live in the northeast US and still havent found a store with more than one baritone. It's rare they have anything other than Kalas. So there's no option but to buy online for anything past the basic ukulele.
I have 5 ukuleles. I got a pineapple Lanikai soprano years ago, but I never really play that one. I'm a tenor gal. I really got into playing on my blue Enya EUT-MAD. I fell in love with that uke hard, and she is still one of my most played ukes. That fretboard feels so good under my fingertips. Then I got a Caramel brand solid acacia acoustic CT204 figuring I could slap a low G on to try that tuning out. A little quiet, but it sounded so sweet that I left it re-entrant. It's my travel ukulele for playing on car trips. Those both have D'Addario Titanium Fluorocarbon strings. I still wanted a low G, and I wanted something with some volume to it. So I got my Kemona Coco tenor. Beautiful and unique looking. Solid cedar top with solid rosewood back and sides. She's a screamer and is my low G. She's my other main uke. Been trying a variety of strings on her. I also do love the sound of a good baritone. I got Kala's older model cedar top baritone (KA-ABP-CTG) with that pretty paduak binding. Beautiful mellow sound and very comfortable to play. That's my entire ukulele garden. There are a few expensive ukes I will forever dream about (the Moonbird like you have and the really expensive Petros Tunnel 13, which rings like a bell in fingerstyle). But I'm quite happy with my little family of ukes. I haven't felt a real need to buy a ukulele in several years now, so my uke purchases have moved into uke books (songbooks and tab notebooks) and strings instead. Instead of needing every uke in the world, now I just need to play every song in the world on the ukes I have.
I have 3 ukuleles all tenors. My first was a Kala solid flame maple high G with a cutaway. Number two ukulele I jumped up into a KoAloha all koa low G. The third ukulele I bought was a ANueNue solid mahogany high G. I love them all for different reasons but of course I want more.
Thank you for this video! I love seeing people talk about their ukeleles and why they like each one. Today I focused on your Moonbird as I have just ordered one. Unfortunately we don’t have many ukelele shops nearby that contain the variety of ukes I would like to experience, so watching TH-cam is my best way to buy. I have 8 and I love them all, of course like my children. The Maestro tenor is a rich sounding instrument that works perfectly with low G, fingerpicking or strumming (if you get the chance to try one,do it). The Maton tenor is high G with Aquila red strings that make it more musical when fingerpicking when compared with the very pretty Flight 10 in high G with factory nylon strings. The loudest and my first baby was the Kala travel uke. Because it is so loud and to enhance the deep sound I put a low G on it, very cool! For taking anywhere I bought a Klos fluorocarbon uke. It has nylon strings and I can practice playing it softly easily anywhere we go. I’m still a self conscious beginner and most of my ukes are better than I’ll ever be!
My first and still favorite is my pineapple soprano. Ended up buying a concert and a tenor later and I love them as well but that little pineapple is so cool and definitely has its own sound.
Tenor high G also, true uke sound for me!... my Enya k5 is my favorite to play home, the Nova on the beach and the kala zircote ST when i use my Uke to make people sing ( as i do in my work, lucky me!)...
I like cheap and good ukes like the Donner tenor and the Flight Voyager, i give them as gift every time i get somebody to become à uke player!

He said in another video he said it was gifted as a paid promotion 😂 all jokes aside, if your spouse loves you they will want to see you take joy in things. I play nowhere near as good as Marco but I have 5 ukuleles and a guitar. I enjoy playing them all for different things. If I had to say my most used ukulele for an all rounder, it’s my tenor. Not going into the wood or anything but size wise these are easier to play yet still have the same uke tuning which makes it nice. I might be happy once I have another tenor for a low g, and add a ubass to my collection of soprano, concert, tenor, banjolele and baritone. And it’s none of my husbands business 😂
The trick is getting her to want to play, then she'll want them as much as you, but you'll have to share.

I started my journey playing tenor, and low G also every now and then. Then I played my way down to concert, eventually sopranos and I love it. It feels just right playing sopranos. Haven't touched a concert or tenor in years now!
I started with a tenor and am happy to hear that I made a good choice. Just got a pretty Fender blue electric uke. Hoping that it will be louder because I’m playing at church and I need more sound. I have a long way to go, I love your beautiful finger style. It’s still a bit beyond me at this point, but it’s coming
Nice video. I do have a question about your baritone uke. You mentioned that you have it in it's normal tuning, but have you tried it with the tuning uke tuning and how does it sound?
Video idea: It would be cool to have you play a song showing the different sounds you can get between high and low G tunings on your baritone, and maybe include a direct comparison using a tenor uke with high and low G so we can all have a very clear direct comparison. Thanks!
I play multiple instruments, flutes, keyboards, guitar, and more. Only two years ago I tried ukulele. But already I have five: a concert tuned like a violin in fifths, a tenor with re-entrant tuning and another with low G, a baritone (love it for singing because it fits my baritone voice,) and a bass which is crazy for the small size but it does work. The baritone, just like my classical guitar, is my favorite, but the low G tenor is a close second. The violin tuned concert is great for playing melody like a tenor banjo without hauling a big 5 pound banjo around. Love your youtube lessons, too BTW. Thanks!
Hi Marco, thank you for your videos. I already have a Kala Soprano, but wanted a deeper sound, so I did a lot of research on Baritone Ukuleles. I finally decided on the Kala Baritone that you featured in this video. It is so beautiful and the deeper, guitar like sounds are great. I ordered it today and am really looking forward to receiving it. I will continue to watch your helpful and inspiring videos. Thank you.
At heart I shall always be a soprano guy, my Kiwaya model is a particular favourite. Recently I bought an old Pono mahogany tenor which I have strung in cuatro tuning (low 1st and 4th strings), trying to capture something of the lovely tone of Cliff Edwards’ later playing. I must take issue with your categorisation of concert and soprano ukes as “beginner” instruments unsuitable for finger picking. Go and listen to the playing of John King, for one, whose exquisite Campanella playing showed just what a smaller ukulele can do.

I’m with you in this beautiful musical journey from the very beginning so i have listened all the different ukulele you used. But personally i like the Makai LT one the most. It’s kind of very soothing and sweet sound. Definitely a feel good factor is there. All of them are nice
🤣👏👏👏‼️It’s like golf clubs, you couldn’t expect to play every shot with the same club. I love thin tenors but I picked up an inexpensive standard concert (my first concert) with a nice, wide nut to use as my low G experiment ………….and Uke for days out on the boat. It sounds so good I don’t want to ruin it by using it outdoors 🤔🤔, seems like I need another Uke….
I’m learning The Ecstasy of Gold by Ennio Morricone (The good, The bad & the Ugly theme) but there are 2 ways to play- the arpeggio is high G (ONLY), the chords sound better with that low G.

I have a Cordoba mahogany tenor with low G tuning and I adore it. It’s my only ukulele and I wanted the warmest sounding, most versatile instrument I could afford. I have very small hands so I was looking for something “guitar-like” that would let me learn finger style, strumming, and even try “slide ukulele”!. They’re great instruments. I play mostly Hawaiian music with mine, so anything would work, but I love it anyway.
thank you for the videos. decided on a baritone to build back finger/grip strength after my 2nd slipped disc operation that caused nerve lapse. played guitar for years in my teens and stopped after being married, having kids, busy with work. baritone is an easy transition without the guitar size that i'm not able to hold well... really great build on sting's shape of my heart. hope you can discuss on chord chemistry and chord progression. i'm a big fan of ted greene.
Try the reentrant high D tuning on a baritone ukulele. Beautiful voice with sparkle.

I have three ukes: tenor Outdoor uke with high G (great take anywhere uke), an Ohana TK39 with low G that I use regularly for leading worship at church, and a Martin soprano that I purchased while looking for a baritone at a music store. The Martin soprano is woody and crisp. A delight to play.

I have 5 ukez; a soprano my first uke (Denver) with Aquila strings, a soprano (enya nova mini) for outdoor jams fluorocarbon strings, a concert (Aklot mahogany low g), Tenor (Horse), and a 5 string Tenor (Aklot mahogany) my absolute favourite! My 'Noah Mahogany Tenor', low G is my newest, and it is beautiful. I have three Ukes so far, two from UK based Noah (luthier built instruments) and the re-entrant Concert is also beautiful. Not sure I have a favourite!
I have two tenor ukulele's a Kamaka hf-3 low g and a Woodley White reentrant tuned tenor. My favorite is the low g Kamaka because of the beautiful low rich sound.

This was a fun video. Thanks as always, Marco. I’ve been wondering how many ukes you own. I’ve had a Martin tenor (low G) for several years and recently purchased a Kamaka long-neck tenor (high G). The long-neck tenor has a similar body size to a standard tenor, but two additional frets before the body and a bit more space between frets (much easier for fingerstyle). I had a standard size Kamaka 8-string tenor, but returned it and have a Kamaka long-neck 8-string tenor on order. I enjoyed playing the 8-string fingerstyle (I also play 12-string guitar), but decided to exchange it after realizing how much easier fingerstyle playing is on my standard tenor long-neck versus the Martin.
Thanks for a really interesting video - loved seeing your collection.I have a Koaloha koa tenor which is probably my favorite uke. Hi G tuning with Fremont Blackline strings. Totally agree with you about the "magic" of a high G tenor! Also have a Kiwaya mahogany tenor, low G, and a Kanilea koa concert - as you said, great for strumming & has a beautiful clear tone. Also have an Enya Nova U tenor - plastic & carbon fiber - sounds good & great for playing outdoors in the hot summertime!

Very insightful! lots of really good information thanks! and to answer the questions at the end, I own 4 ukuleles, 1 soprano, 2 concert (one low G the other high), and a tenor. The tenor has got to be my favorite, it's a Kala Brooklyn Green Archtop, love it to death :)
For more „Power“ with the small size of a Concert-Ukulele you can use a Banjo-Ukulele (for example by GOLDTONE) It is louder - but with less sustain.
I got a double neck tenor custom Ortega and a baritone Ortega. Awesome sounding and no big deal tuning the 8 string one on the double neck. lolz.
I now own 3 ukuleles Dhani Harrison by Fender tenor in high g, a Kala tenor in low g with a flamed maple body which is my favourite and the same kala baritone as yours
My current favorite is an AnueNue all solid mahogany in low G with Uke Logic hard tension strings.

I think hand size is an important mention here. I have a Luna soprano, which is on the long side for a soprano I think, and I have smaller than average hands for a guy, but finger-style is my preferred style, and I love doing it on that uke. There's plenty of fret space for my fingers, but it's also short enough that I can fret an open chord and still reach over half of the neck to get melody notes on the A string.
I was considering a baritone because I like the size and fit of my Ukulele bass.

appreciate your videos. I take exception with you statement about 8 strings not being suitable for fingerstyle. for me ,it depends on the string spacing. My cheap Lanaiki sounds and plays great fingerstyle, but a Kamaka I had was difficult as the string spacing was closer.

I really want a 5 string now... Have a saprano, concert, and tenor ATM... Thought I wanted a tenor 5 string but a concert maybe have caught my fancy... Or a long neck 5 string concert also has my eye.
Ha! UAS. Ukulele acquisition syndrome....but it's nice to have different ukes for their different sound and playability. Most uke players do own several for the same reasons you gave. I have five.

My collection consists of a 'dolphin' soprano, two tenors (low and high G), a bass, a banjolele, and a guitarlele (no desire for a baritone as I have guitars too)
I have a Duke mahogany Concert. I'm sorry to hear you say it's only OK for beginners and strumming. My Stag soprano is small, the Kala tenor string tension and fret spacing is awkward for me. My concert feels so comfortable, the tone is glorious and I want to play fingerstyle.

Be learning ukulele on my daughters Caramel soprano. I decided to push myself to spend more time and invested in a Ko’alana tenor by Ko’Aloha. I know it’s not a solid wood but for me it has that island feel and it sounds great. I will keep it HighG. One question is, is it worth having it full tuned by a luthier? It would cost about half the price of the uke itself.
Hi Marco, Loved this intro to all the Ukuleles… I have a Cordoba concert Ukulele that I put a low G on, but now I really want a tenor or concert with high G as well. I just want two :) One high G and one Low G. What would you recommend I do? Should I change back my concert to high G and get a tenor with low G?
I got my first ukulele for farthers day. Its a flight tenor ukulele. Its got some nice tribal marking engraving in it. I haven't been able to put it down. I am looking to get another one. But im being drawn to try the electric ukuleles.

Size:Soprano Scale With a Tenor Body. I have always loved the sound of a Tenor Ukulele But having arthritis in my hands am unable to play one comfortably, so usually play a Concert size Ukulele. Recently I was browsing and came across a review on you tube of this ukulele and thought that seems ideal for me .But I couldn’t get one none available until 2022.Then Browsing again a well known UK store one of the best Three in the U K in my opinion had a Preloved one in so I promptly sent for it and it has become my favourite in a short time . Very comfortable to play and the sound is just what I wanted It has an enlarged lower bout and very deep sides giving amazing depth and power to the sound . It sounds like a tenor ukulele but is indeed a soprano scale...

Oooo Margaret I have been eyeing the Romero creations mahogany but concert size. I too LOVE the tenor sound, even bari, but my hands also limit to concert. Good to know that you like the Romero, I am so tempted to order concert. No way to try at a store, but many ytube videos to hear.
@@jsdixon6960 I really wanted the concert but at the time there were no concerts for sale in the UK and there was a long wait for them to come in ,I was browsing one day and saw this one for sale it was used but in immaculate condition so I sent for it and loved it it is a tenor sized body and deep as well but soprano scale I think the concert would be awesome I would love one .
@@margaretshepherd9983 Guess what I got this weekend?? Signature concert! Your story gave me the idea to check FB marketplace and there was one for sale, and only 2 hrs away from me! We messaged, agreed to meet halfway and I came home with a new to me Ukulele! I love the sound, ease of action/play, and even in spite of my touch sensitivity to wound strings I can handle the wound low g no problem, it is so smooth! (bc I really wanted a low g, and unwounds tend to be floppy) I'm so happy!! (I'm sure you can relate)

As of this response, I have been playing for 11 months. My first is a 21 in. Soprano. Her frets are real close together and makes it difficult to hit some chords. I also have big hands. I wish I had done my research. I would have gotten one a bit bigger.
Marco, which ukuleles do you find you using more than any other?
One thing I'll say about eight string uke is that if you have any interest in renaissance guitar (as in the instrument), you can get an eight string uke and lose one of the top strings, and you've got the same strings and tuning as a renn guitar. Those had moveable gut frets, so it's not a perfect solution, but it's a good bit more affordable than buying an actual reproduction of a renn guitar 😅
Hi Marco ! Nice video ! I personally own 2 ukuleles, a Peavey Composer AU (at my parents home) and a Kala KA-C in my own house. I live on a caribbean island where there's not a lot of music stores an they don't really care about ukes so it's realy hart to try one before you buy it. I like the sound of the KA-C which has a clear sound. I have big hands with long fingers an this video made me understand that maybe i should consider getting a tenor.
Ah! The Caribbean … I worked there for 7 weeks. The most relaxing time of my life hehe. I am sure it’s hard to find ukes there.

As a beginner (but getting closer to intermediate I hope) I only own 1 concert. I’m looking for a tenor. I loved the sound of your Makai when it had the Aquila (or some brand of Nylon) strings….pre Worth browns or clears…. My little town’s 2 instrument stores only have one tenor each and both are lower end laminates. One of them has a wider neck which I like.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me??
I have been thinking of a Kanile’a 5 string. I been playing an enya blue maple tenor. Maybe 5 string will be best if both low/high G?
Marco, I really like the looks of the Kala Super tenor, but I much prefer the high G turning since all of my ukulele music is for high G tuning. So, what would you think about a Kala Super tenor with different strings that included a high G? What strings would you recommend if someone wanted to get a Kala Super tenor and restring it for high G?
Can u do fingerstile with a 8 strings bariton ukulele ? If u have a baritone ukulele can u tune it an octave lower? like for the high G and low G?

Why do you recommend the tenor ukulele for fingerpicking techniques, Marco? I started two years ago with a concert ukulele and fingerpicking and chord melody and I am really fine with this. I even play chord melody on a soprano ukulele. Is it probably because as a women I have smaller fingers? Or is it because I was comfortable with playing the guitar before. Though, when playing the guitar now I always feel overwhelmed by its size and wonder how I was able to learn this instrument when only being fourteen years old ...

Sorry I don’t agree that you can’t play finger style on a soprano or concert. Check out Samantha Muir who plays classical Uke primarily on soprano. And Mika Kane’s gorgeous finger style sound sample on the Anuenue UC5K.

i'm a total beginner, and I want to start with the baritone ukulele... why does it lacks "magic"??? I like the low tone, can I tune a baritone like a normal ukulele???

All those Ukes and no soprano? Since it’s the most popular type I imagine there’s a good reason you wouldn’t want one, and wish you’d mentioned something on that. I have a baritone and have no experience with any other kind, so when my niece asked for a ukulele for Christmas, I have to assume she’s thinking of a soprano and yet, if I was starting out, I suspect I’d want a tenor one myself. Since the tuning would work with all ukulele tablature and the size would convey a fuller sound, that’s probably what I’ll get her, but I was leaning toward a soprano before seeing your video. Do you just not like the less resonant sound of a soprano personally? Or is there another reason that should make me reconsider which one t choose?
My niece is an adult now and she’s tall with full, adult fingers, and I saw her play a guitar in a fingerstyle, bluesy way that made me think a larger uke might be more apt. I mention this only because I know that people sometimes buy a uke (a soprano) as a gift for a child, thinking of it as a toy, but that’s not the case here. She’s smart and will likely put some time into learning to play it. Maybe since she already has a guitar, the soprano would be of more interest, being so different from her other instrument. I play multiple instruments, flutes, keyboards, guitar, and more. Only two years ago I tried ukulele. But already I have five: a concert tuned like a violin in fifths, a tenor with re-entrant tuning and another with low G, a baritone (love it for singing because it fits my baritone voice,) and a bass which is crazy for the small size but it does work. The baritone, just like my classical guitar, is my favorite, but the low G tenor is a close second. The violin tuned concert is great for playing melody like a tenor banjo without hauling a big 5 pound banjo around. Love your youtube lessons, too BTW. Thanks!
