hi Warren .....just wanted to say how much i enjoy all of your vidios ....you have many fantastic skills .....realise you been at it a long time and admire your enthusiasm ....also enjoy all the stuff you do with tim , marty , and my favorite ...mr stash .....looks like you all have a great time out there and thanks for sharing it all
Thanks again for your instruction. I appreciate the detail you give to the simple and elementary aspects of recording. I'm at the start where NOTHING is obvious as it would be to someone more experienced. Thank you.
Hi +Mark McPeak Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! So glad to be able to help!! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
"Organize your tracks" = great advice! I don't use Pro Tools, but rather Studio One. Even so, I always take a few seconds to label my tracks, group them with like parts (drums all grouped in the same area, guitars all grouped together, vocals all grouped together, etc.). Then, I color-code all of my parts (drums are blue-gray, guitars violet, bass guitars are green, vocals yellow, synths magenta, etc.). It sounds like a lot of extra work to go through, but the reality of it is, organizing my tracks saves SO much time that would have, otherwise, been spent digging through the tracks, trying to find the part that I want to work on. Likewise, I use song position labels (a label where verse one starts, label where the chorus starts, etc.). This saves time finding locations within the song I wish to edit.
great to watch someone who knows it inside and out rip thru that with flair, I hope by the year 2525 I can get that good at pro tools, thanks for the post
This is great. Although I could barely hear those misses on the rhythm that you corrected. I don't use Pro Tools or a Mac for that matter but most of this should still apply to other programs.
Hi Warren! I mostly use MIDI input in recording with virtual instruments. So, when you record on a mic or on a DI, how do you account for latency or notes not falling in time very well? What is the "quantization" process for a mic or DI recording?
Looks a good video series. Amazing to see how things have changed over time and what you can do in a studio setup these days. I have worked on tons of equipment from SSLs and Neve's and spent a fair time fixing older style outboard gear like Lexicon 480s and 224s Eventides etc. Seriously good to see all this creativity happening and thanks for the video a great watch.
Fantastic as always Warren. Now I have always used Cubase since my Atari STFM in the 80's...... I also use Studio One 3 because I was given it as a Gift, this DAW is surprisingly good. But please could you give me a few more reasons why you favour PT....... Aside from it being the choice of most Mixing Engineer's and Studios etc......
Hey Warren! First of all, thank you for all your videos! They're a life saver. Could you please help me out? I was having some troubles with Pro Tools because of CPU overload errors and I'd like to know please if you use a macbook pro and, if so, how much GB of RAM it has. I have the latest macOS X Mojave system, but my mac is of late 2013 and has only 4GB of RAM. I'm guessing that's the problem. Thanks!
So I started recording on my computer about a month ago, and I bought Ableton Live. Based on all the videos I've seen (AND the sample session material for practice available on www.producelikeapro.com/plap-control-room) it seems like I should have bought ProTools instead. Warren, do you have any thoughts on this? Would I be well advised to just bite the bullet and go ahead and get ProTools, since that's where all the education seems to be focused?
Hi, +Daniel Cardin Ableton is a great DAW and from what I hear in forums is very easy to use!! I like Pro Tools for it's audio editing capabilities, for me, it's very intuitive! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren, very interesting video once again! I was wondering, why do you copy a track to a "playlist"? I'm not sure what a playlist does actually. I use cubase, is there an alternative in cubase for this?
Hi Albert Weijers I don't know what the Cubase equivalent is. But in Pro Tools a playlist function allows you to have one track but multiple 'playlists' on it. These playlists are very useful when you are comping vocals etc. Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
Hi Warren... I have a question after seeing this video. Well, I have Cubase 8... I can "translate" most of those steps from Pro Tools to Cubase 8. But the only thing that bothered me is when I start the project, on Pro tools you choose 24 bit, 48 kHz and Wav, but there is something in Cubase 8 called Volume Max within 6bit to 12 bit, and I can't understand what it is and what should I choose for start. Hope you can help me. I am having fun learning from your videos. Thanks!
Hi +Christian Contreras Interesting question! Can any Cubase users out there who can help? Have a marvelous time recording and mixing! Many thanks Warren
Are you sure it's 6bit and not 6dB? Volume Max is how much volume you can add on the channel strip's fader. If you sometimes need to add more than 6dB then set it to 12.
Near the end you did a "Bounce to Disk". You talked about Bouncing as if everyone knows what it is. Could you explain Bouncing briefly and how does that differ from just saving the project? Thanks.
"Bouncing" its just the export of the .wav audio stereo file so you can open it on any audio player and give it a listen to check your mix and also give it to someone to master it for you,"Saving" just saves the entire project.
Hi Warren...I picked up a new converter (Orion 32) that will record 32 tracks at 192K...is 192 even necessary or noticeable ? Or would U recommend the standard 48k at 24bit for my sessions like this video ? What are your thoughts ? Thanks Again Paul
Hi Paul Bryson thanks for the great question. I would suggest you look at how efficiently your computer can run at 192k 32 bit with multiple plug ins on it. If it runs smoothly and you're able to mix effectively on it then I say go for it! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren
HI +David Thompson Absolutely! I intend to do a lesson using free plugins entirely and then offer the template! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
I/O ? "Input 9 FOR RDI? OUTPUT TO COUNSEL if not then obveuse to1 AND 2"? HUH?????? My Input here is: "no input" or "interface", and output is "Main Out L/R". Can You start there? I have a usb in/out from the stereo mixer and I get usb (CODEC 0-in 2-out) and usb (CODEC 1-in 2-out) and usb(CODEC 2-out 0-in) in pro tools aggregate device and none are recording to pro tools. The stereo usb from x2222 to my Mac i7 3.5 32 1600 isn't recognizing to record? Or is the configuration in pro tools 11 need to be corrected somehow? Or the mac "Audio Setup Devices" actually setting a "path" on the mac? This may seem redundant but I think this is overall the most significant issue to recording into pro tools, over pressing the record button in a pre-outfitted professional-studio if you really want to record something in pro tools. Everyone seems to skip to "press the button" and that really doesn't help anyone at all. I got nothin off your vid for getting pro tools to record off a usb in/out mixer 24bit stereo track into anywhere onto pro tools 11. Did I miss something?
you are quite MULTI talented sir!! If I had a billion dollars Id pay you to personally mentor me.. I mean I went to the conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in AZ... but they only teach you enough to get coffee for artists and possibly fill in when tape op is too hungover hahaha
I just got an internship at a studio using pro tools..thank you so much for these videos!! very clear and concise
Thanks ever so much! Congratulations
@@Producelikeapro can i have this for make my song i what it with Come with session

Leonardo Sotero Running Pro Tools with less than 16 gig of RAM is not going to work too well.

Hi tockusa thanks very much! The mix competition song is at 168bpm. Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren

Subbed and signed up on your site. I use Studio One 3 but find that all of the information translates over just fine. Good stuff.
Hi Unity Gain, that's great to hear! Glad to be able to help! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
where can I get more information on this mix competition? I would like to enter.
Is 48 preferred over 96? I understand that latency is lower with 96 when recording?
hey i was wondering if u could do a lesson on free software eg. audacity and plugin mixing on a budget
HI +David Thompson Absolutely! I intend to do a lesson using free plugins entirely and then offer the template! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
