  • Jordan Hall was for a long time an early tech pioneer, perhaps best known for founding DivX (if you've downloaded or watched any video on the internet you can thank him). However his interests turned towards philosophy and what the future holds for humanity. He founded the Civium Project and Plan B to explore how humanity might become less rivalrous and more win-win.

    This “Enlightened” New World utopia isn’t turning out to be all it was cracked up to be. Society is disenchanting, but are the only alternatives hiding out in the hills or burying yourself in books? With an air of levity and a touch of humor, John Heers teaches how to examine the confusing New World by calling upon the mind and wisdom of oft-forgotten Old. Heavy Things, Lightly.

    The prodigal son parable is such a beautiful example of human rebelliousness, infinite grace of the father, and also the bitterness of the good son who never left the father’s side. This story was a central comfort in my Christian story!

    Love this - "beauty first opens up a deeper ground". I really resonate with that as a way 'back in' to faith when reason fails.

    Jordan, you are amazing. Would you consuder doing some kind of a podcast to share your journey? I think being present to witness your unique brain engaging with Christianity can help a lot of us who aren’t as adept.

      Wild. I received an invitation to do something like that, but was feeling reluctant - then saw your comment here. I suppose that is a proper sign.

    Funny, recently I have taken to calling myself an apocalyptic Christian. I fully agree with the notion of something big coming to a close, and an apocalypse in the Greek sense of an unveiling.

    Wow thank you for a great conversation!
    Love the discussion of the historical development of the movement from Old world to New, religious to secular, Enlightenment, paradigms, etc. all these things are in flux, the categories of paradigms can't hold

    I appreciate this conversation. The demons will do what they do, the problem is with us.
    Also Jordan Hall had a moment there when he heard the lavished pigpen analogy 😂. I don't blame him, I realize that's what I've been up to my whole life... just doubling down and pimping up my pigpen... and you think about what that means and realize that's all we've been taught to do.

    Jordan Hall's explanation of how he came to realize we're facing civilizational collapse was one of the two red pill type moments I've had in life. The first was reading Wilber's Integral Theory back in the 1990's... in both cases there has been this strong feeling that everything is fitting in differently but yet now makes sense in a way that didn't before, in light of my new perspective.

    • @heavythingslightly
      @heavythingslightly  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Jordan and others like him, but Jordan especially, are dealing with very old and deeply spiritual ideas, and doing with new world language and for that he is a perfect guest. The different fits are coming but it's gonna be rocky indeed. And also good... or something like an opportunity. Do you think spiritual peace will become a new type of currency? You comment makes me think of that...

    Using scientific language to analyze the arc of history and culture is not an improvement to the ancient way of looking at it. There is no evolution in our understanding or our ability to make use of culture. The initial revelation was the truest and deepest form.

    • @ukcj4jonesy896
      @ukcj4jonesy896 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Agreed. But scientific language is the best way to help a scientific minded person to understand these things. And Jordan is an example of where that can lead.

    • @MichaelOregonia
      @MichaelOregonia 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@ukcj4jonesy896 yeah, I suppose you're right. In a way, science is the religion that we are all brought up in and it's probably unavoidable. I just keep hearing people acting like they are making some vast improvement by talking about spiritual topics in scientific terms. In reality they are limiting themselves and missing the meaning that is all around them.
