  • In this video I have a minimal implementation for operating ST-412/506 interface hard drives manually. I can select the drive, step the heads in and out, read the ready, index, and track 0 signals, and scope the index pulse and the data.
I haven't implemented head selection, though I might try that later on as I would like to build a complete system for manually selecting and reading data from these drives.
I share my thoughts on a number of aspects of the drive, of using oscilloscopes to read signals like this, and other fascinations.

Great info in the video, hard to visualize with vintage gear tho :(. I would highly recommend even the cheapest modern PC based Logic Analyzer, even something as ghetto like $1 (with free shipping) "WeAct USB Logic Analyzer DLA Mini 24Mhz 8ch Channels Hardware Debug Tool 5V MCU ARM FPGA Debugger" aka a Chinese clone of Saleae Logic using Chinese Corebai CBM9002A clone of Cypress FX2 chip :]

I have a logic analyzer. The point of this video was simply exploratory.
