Explanation of the saturable reactor from previous video.
In this video I offer some explanation and a schematic of what was going on in my video (th-cam.com/video/6bRjJ-ivP94/w-d-xo.html) on the saturable reactor experiment I was doing. th-cam.com/video/6bRjJ-ivP94/w-d-xo.html

Playing with old RLL stuff - Seagate ST-238R
มุมมอง 9809 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
In this video I have a minimal implementation for operating ST-412/506 interface hard drives manually. I can select the drive, step the heads in and out, read the ready, index, and track 0 signals, and scope the index pulse and the data. I haven't implemented head selection, though I might try that later on as I would like to build a complete system for manually selecting and reading data from ...
Final remarks on the Weller WES51 and PES51 including opinion on design changes.
มุมมอง 72314 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
In this video I have the Weller PES51 pencil fully separated and have found the fault that led to an open ground circuit which I mentioned in previous videos. I am disappointed with the design of the cord restraint and the grounding scheme and intend to modify my iron to improve on these areas considerably.
A way to pull the Weller PES51 pencil apart nicely.
มุมมอง 10114 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
I thought up a way of disassembling the Weller PES51 soldering iron pencil without the risk of tearing the wiring apart or damaging the hardware. In the video I make a guess that the thread on the iron is 3/8-24 (3/8-N.F.); I verified that this is the correct size.
More to the Weller WES51 story...

So I should've kept poking around while I was taking the previous video about this soldering iron... This is insane, and totally unacceptable. The fasteners for the power transformer are not tight and the ground bonding connections might as well be flapping in the breeze.
Soldering iron with... poor internal solder joints...

My Weller WES51, which I've had for over a decade, has always been strangely erratic at times. For some reason I just never investigated it as it worked well enough almost always. I decided to have a look finally and I can't believe what I found...
Saturable Reactor Fun
มุมมอง 2.1K16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
In this video I'm using a saturable reactor as part of a regulated power supply to demonstrate the concept of magnetic amplification or magnetic control of power delivery in AC circuits.

Here I'm testing a concept I came up with the other day. It's highly unlikely I'm the first to think of this of course. I'm using a cluster of speakers in a common location (near each other) to create a stereo sound field by acoustic summation (the waves add constructively or destructively in the air as they propagate). The center speaker reproduces mono sound which is the sum of the left and r...

A bit of a show-and-tell today; it's a strange electrical "filter" or "conditioner" of some unknown contrivance. This is one of those pieces of junk that sits on my shelf for a few years until I either throw it out, give it away, or make a video about it. I was not expecting what I found inside, but I'm also not the least bit surprised. It's the electrical equivalent to fuel line magnet quacker...

I discuss a very early example of the state of the consumer CD player art from the beginning of the compact disc era. The machine in this video was made in 1983. This was made for Phase Linear by Kyocera and is actually a Kyocera DA-01 internally.

I’m a student so much of this flew way above my head, but I think I understood the basics. I’d love to build an amplifier like this, but I am legit afraid of screwing it up, and I have no idea how to choose ”safe” values for all those coils/transformers. I haven’t seen your first video about this however, in case you talked about that aspect. I think you explained the basic principles well. I don’t think we even discussed saturable (constant voltage) transformers in school, yet once you added the waveform illustrations I think I understood the basic idea. The feedback circuit however I didn’t quite understand. It also was amusing to see your issues with accidentally drawing perfectly straight lines while trying to draw a schematic. Don’t get me wrong - the drawing was perfectly understandable. But most of it kinda is just straight lines anyway.
I have been tinkering with the same thing! I have been winding my own and testing So please go on and on!!
Thank you for taking the time to this video!!
Great info in the video, hard to visualize with vintage gear tho :(. I would highly recommend even the cheapest modern PC based Logic Analyzer, even something as ghetto like $1 (with free shipping) "WeAct USB Logic Analyzer DLA Mini 24Mhz 8ch Channels Hardware Debug Tool 5V MCU ARM FPGA Debugger" aka a Chinese clone of Saleae Logic using Chinese Corebai CBM9002A clone of Cypress FX2 chip :]
I have a logic analyzer. The point of this video was simply exploratory.
Looks like my workshop but main thing is you know what you do!
@@LawpickingLocksmith haha, thanks! Ultimately I think the most important is having fun. I don't always know what I'm doing, but that's okay, I'm here to find things out because they're fascinating.
You learn something new every day! Nice vid
Congratulations for publishing the most confused video on TH-cam even though I have extensive electronic knowledge and knowledge of what you're trying to do I still couldn't figure out what you're Doing. An explanation with a drawing will go a long way to make this rather simple system easy to understand.
@@johnyoungquist6540 nothing stopping you from making your own less confusing video 🥰
The saturable reactor 😝is often underestimated by modern electronic designers ............. DAVE™🛑
Schematics would have been great. You should also consider buying a tripod for the cam, I got seasick in the end...
@@jihellechat1785 I do these because I enjoy it for myself. If you don't like them, it so happens there are one or two other videos on the TH-cam platform to check out.
How about opening your video with What the Hell you are Trying to Accomplish... ?
Great video, congrats. I'd love to see the schematic of it, it's quite hard to see how have you connected all that.
I did another video today with some description and a drawing of what's going on. Sorry it's so long and meandering! th-cam.com/video/NJr0s46781Y/w-d-xo.html
I gave up on Weller a few years ago and spent the money on a JBC CD-1BQE (110v). They make far superior irons.

Thanks for the valuable video. I do have this model. It would be much helpful , If you had also done the video for that how to reload the tray agin into the chassis. Could you please let me know where can I find the motor belt for this model & type? Kindly let me know. Thank you and best regards.
I also have a Phase Linear 9500, original owner. It's in excellent condition. I have not used it in a long time. My question is does the belt need to be replaced eventually?

The LED "bleed through" is a consequence of the front panel design. They used 8271 shift registers which are known to not transition instantly.
Interesting video, but a tip: film things in closeup when you are showing interesting stuff.
It's always cool being able to visualize things like this that normally go unseen. Makes for a stronger understanding. The random trivial things like this that you found interesting I am also fascinated by, and am glad you thought it worth making a video. The world of electromagnetism is amazing and one of the most fun areas of science for experimenting. Great choice of game to have on display for your video btw. Good times lol
