Pauses at 2:40 - Smaller pulley on Alternator means Alternator spinning Faster then Cam drive.
Normally an Alternator spins faster then Crackshaft RPM, the 2 to 1 reduction via the Cam drive chain, then the pulley's on the Cam and Alternator, means the Alternator will be spinning close to Crank speed, but then compare to normal road car crank speed vs high RPM held wide open, and this combination is still spinning the Alternator slower then a road car, meaning the Alternator bearings are not being stressed and over heated.
Whole arrangement is way smart,... Alternator sits in normal operation range while motor running hard, lower stresses on everything on those belts make them more reliable, less things to worry about on race day.

    Nose piece.
There is a new process called " Pinch Forming " where sheet metal is held tight in a frame then a robot on each side uses a stylus to form the metal. Custom car builders are now starting to contract out this process rather than forming by hand. .

This is fantastic! And Happy Birthday, Pete!
I notice many tubes running along the side of the engine. Did you use the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine as inspiration? (Yes, I know, the Merlin has that monstrous supercharger on the other end.)
Question, a serious question: Another small group of men put together a new V012 engine much like this one: it displaces 6 liters, it is designed to rev very high, and they want it to make 1,000 horsepower. Of course, it is the Cosworth V-12 that powers the Aston Martin Valkyrie. Would Kevin and Pete like to compare that engine with theirs? Just wondered. Thanks! 🙂

    • @mpetersen6
      @mpetersen6 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

As much as l admire what Pete and Kevin achieve there is no comparision between what them and what a firm like Cosworth can achieve. Cosworth has at their command a full engineering staff, machining capabilities, foundry and possibly forging abilities. This does not disparage Pete and Kevin's work. And in my opinion these engines would not exist without Kevin's abilities.

    • @leslienordman8718

@@mpetersen6oh, by no means am I intending a game of Top Trumps between Pete and Kevin and Cosworth. I forsee something ever so much more collegial, not competitive.
Can you see it? Cosworth sends over a couple of their senior engineers along with a Valkyrie engine. They put the two 6-liter V-12''s together, they rev them up. The four talk the Internal Combustion magic that would make our heads spin and our eyes shine, just like we would want.
      Everybody wins.
      What do you think? 🙂

A better cammer than the Cammer? The idea of a 7 foot timing chain was bonkers. Especially with a long basically unsupported run between cylinder banks. The GM experimental SOHC & DOHC engines of the 60s were mostly gear driven. Although Pontiac did build one with timing chains on the back of the engine. An incredibly dumb idea that has been done by others. Requiring removal of the engine for any timing work. If gears were good enough for the Cosworth DFV they'd be good enough for me. Plus the growl of all those teeth meshing. 🤯

Just curious. I wonder how much it would be to make up a DOHC head for a 4.0 six out of the Jeep. The DOHC heads out of the LQ-1 are close 4.400 bore center versus 4.380. And the Infinity/Nissan is 4.409. Now don't laugh. In Argentina they race DOHC versions of the 4.0, the 200 Ford and the Chevy inline 6. All reduced to 3.0 liters. About the only original parts are the block. Dry sumps, griddle bottom ends etc. 500 hp using two down draft Webers. Used in the oldest continuous racing series on the planet.
I know there are people trying to lay their hands on either the engines or the heads but they seem to be unobtanium.
With people doing swaps on to the Ford 300 with LS heads I'm surprised that somebody hasn't done a 4.0 yet as the heads are a better match bore spread wise. The Ford Windsor and Cleveland are exact the same.

Yes a whole Vortec would be easier (1). But sometimes people choose the road less traveled. A guy l worked with. His nephew put a 4200 in a 37 Chevy. People at car shows would ask him why and his response was basically any idiot can put an LS in.
      1) The bore centers on the Vortec are a lot closer together than the 4.0.
