Actual goosebumps listening to this.. They were more interested in the fun they were having and the profound experiences of the people listening in the crowd than they ever were about the money and the fame. I appreciate this music so much. It saved my life in so many ways.. I will forever be grateful.. no pun intended.. Remember kids: if you plant ice, you're gonna harvest wind..
No matter how many times I watch this I'm always floored by the awesome power of this incredible musical moment in time. The seriousness of Jerry's demeanor, the intense energy of the crowd all combined to make this an all time musical melt down for the ages.
Another time’s forgotten space... I was front row at this magical moment! Mickey came out for 2nd set and was bouncing on his throne, pumping the crowd3 up! We were all expecting China Cat but then those two notes! And the mood at the beginning of Franklin’s was total euphoria!!! Man what a memory.... chill bumps watching this. The sound here is awesome as well. I appreciate the MIDI now a bit more-Mickey’s tom work with Brent and Jerry’s MIDI during Slipknot is powerful and dark here and there! Gosh I loved this band in these exceptional years. How lucky were we then!!!!!
I’ve never seen them. Plenty of Dead an Co shows, just too young to see Jerry live. His music lives on and I am grateful I get to hear him and watch these shows at least. I consider myself lucky too for being alive at the same time as the Dead, not as lucky as you. Life would suck without Jerry
The reappearance of Help>Slipknot! after a 4 year absence. The following night the boys played the first Dark Star since 84. Death Don't Have No Mercy was also performed at these shows also. Breakout city!!!! Their career was in mid peak!!! I actually listened to the second verse of Dark Star being performed live at home sitting on my bed studying for a mid-term. My friend called me from the hallway on a payphone. When I answered, I heard my friend say, "The Dead are doing a mad Dark Star Down here!" Then he walked away and left the receiver hanging with about five bucks worth of quarters in it. I got to experience it as it happened. I heard Jerry singing, "Mirror shatters in formless reflections of matter..." I had dropped him off at Logan airport earlier in the day.
Dennis, been a dead head b4 Jerry passed & soooo many stories on tour, but that has to jump to the top 5 I've ever heard!Absolutely Stellar man...will b sharing ur story at future festys.Big family thnx 4 da share...luv,peace,& keep on trucking 💜
Technically speaking he is an underrated guitarist. Bluegrass background gives him such a unique take on blues/rock. It’s what makes him so amazing in my opinion!
Underrated? In the 1960s Playboy Magazine had down at two separate times, Jerry Garcia was the fastest guitar player in the world and the best guitar player in the world.
I was there. It was a wild scene. Show billed as "Formerly the Warlocks." I had heard that the Warlocks thing and the limited ticket outlets were done at the behest of the city council, who didn't want the Deadheads overrunning the city any longer. The local business, like hotels and restaurants, on the other hand, LOVED us. Yes, we were boisterous, but we were polite and didn't fight and puke all over everything like some other concert audiences. There were lots of extra tix around because of the way they sold them outside their normal channels. The tix themselves were beautiful, they looked like the mail-order tix from that era with the colored paper and foil-embossed lettering that read "Formerly the Warlocks." There were very few non-heads in attendance because of the stealthy marketing. People were using pieces of stickers or bits of chewing gum to stick their extra tickets onto signposts and the windows of the venue before they went in, presumably so the ticketless could come along and snag them. I saw plenty of people walking around with their fingers in the air, but just as quickly as I spotted them, someone would come along and hand them a ticket. Once inside there was a crackling, vibrant tension in the atmosphere; we all knew something was coming, but no one knew what it would be. I had heard rumors that they had rehearsed HOTW as early as Summer 89, but they didn't play it on that tour so I figured it was just rumors. Then the first set for this show was well-played, but not atypical, so by setbreak I was thinking that maybe it was just going to be a normal show. But when they came out on stage for the second set, everyone could just feel it: something was up. Something big was coming. The exuberant tension of the crowd started swelling like a balloon as they began the count-in, and when that tension popped at the sound of the opening chords of "Help on the Way," the wave of joy that burst from the crowd almost lifted me off my feet. Such a great moment for the Grateful Dead, and such a glorious time to be a Deadhead.
Brother you hit the nail on the head with your description of the first set and into the second. It was an otherworldly feeling when Jerry hit the first notes of HOTW. Miss those extraordinary days of the late 80's tour.
I was so young at that show (3rd grade) that I didn't remember the tickets themselves.. but, I do remember some guy bouncing up to my Dad and I in the lot, who was heavily under the influence ... he was going on about the tickets and how it must be a Prince concert because of the purple colors etc.. memories
Did you notice how, at the rail, the DS was drowned out for the first minute or two by the SCREAMS (and tears) of joy by those in the back ... more sound came from behind than in front!!
I respectfully completely and utterly and totally disagree. I have been in hundreds of Grateful Dead shows and every single night was pure communication with what a lot of people call X. Every single night.
@@veek.6463 meh. I saw 130 shows from 85 to 95. Some were transcendent, some were merely great, some were just good, and a few were downright awful (like Tampa 95)
Hampton was very dark out in the crowd in the seats in 1989 ❤ (~);} Thanks for the video and audio with 2 cameras on the lower level The Warlocks Little girls are the joy of the world, our baby sister was with me, cousin, our brother ran off somewhere or I couldn't see him while I had our dad and uncle's girls. ❤

imo this shows blows the doors off of the infamous next night. in fact, this is one of my top 5 shows post 80'. simply unreal and a glimpse of what was to come in spring of 90'
Happy birthday to you Jerry. Thank yo for showing me where the four winds dwell!! Thank you for a REAL GOOD TIME! You are missed and loved so very much (and I think you'd be amazed at how alive and vibrant the scene you created and built is today)!! May the four winds blow you safely home...!! I am Eternally Grateful!!
Well after 100+ '80s shows attended , this Warlorks Run at Hampton is so energetic ! First time hearing it again , Jerry is boisterous unlike any show in years !
to Me, this speaks more about the relics of our time, and how people choose to preserve the faith that becomes instilled within legacy. We place at the statue's feet hope and in return we receive love. It doesn't matter if it's real, or fake, the magic of belief is enough...
I was at these shows, had a meltdown during the Dark Star breakout, and slept in the trunk of a car. The Help > Slip > Franklins 2nd set opener was icing on the cake! No wait... And We Bid You Goodnight was the icing on the cake!

I've always wondered if Tiger got damaged and needed a lengthy repair or was getting midi installed because he didn't play it again until the last show.
October 8 & 9, 1989 Hampton Coliseum shows. The Grateful Dead were billed as Formerly The Warlocks for these two shows. The shows were recorded on 24 track tape which have been mastered to HCDC specification.
Wow! Smokin Hot Baby! almost as hood as 3 30 90 Nassau. Right when we thought we were out they sucked us back in with the soundboards and ultra clear shows
I was at those spectrum shows. They were my last Dead shows until Tampa 95, which was horrible and I wish I hadn't gone. That 93 tour was probably the last time they were consistently solid from show to show, and then they descended pretty quickly in 94 and 95
Wolf re-emerged at these "Formerly The Warlocks" shows with new experimental midi capability. If you look closely you can see wires taped to the body of the guitar. This same technology was then built into Rosie which debuted the following year. Jerry used Wolf for this entire fall tour. Bobby's birthday 10/16 is considered by many to be the best show of the decade, myself included.
Dennis Campbell thank you for the info, always good to hear these stories. i wish the boys would talk more about this stuff during the interviews they give
Dennis Campbell I remember that technical transition. There was a few shows there where the Wolf had duct tape all over the body and odd extraneous switches on it. My fave Jerry guitar, always a wonderful surprise to see him show up on stage with it every now and then in the later years.
Thank you Lolo yodel and everyone in the dead family for allowing me to wake up at 1:50 in the morning I walked 10 miles today which is way more than I ever walk so I slept and I woke up and this came up and I'm like yeah help slip Franklin's and now I feel good Rastafari San Rafael Marin County San Francisco California currently Tucson Arizona Sonoran Desert yes I I am a sick man I have Jerry myelitis
So .... don't know if people remember the free show in D.C. on the Mall supporting affordable housing with Tracy Chapman, Indigo Girls .... and many other greats!!!!??? I mention this b/c 1 day prior to the Warlocks shows, this concert occurred and the beauty of this was the Mall filling with Deadheads from all over the country.... and the next day the road to Hampton Virginia to see Jerry and the Boys was lined with microbuses, artistically painted school buses converted to homes... etc, etc. THEN.... 2 amazing and probably the best shows that I have seen. We even had our bus broken into the first night and my tickets were stolen... but I "got a miracle" the next day and we made our money back selling banana, peanut butter sandwiches AND then we heard Help-Slip-Franklin's.... and we lived in a hippie house in D.C. on Franklin Street .... no words to describe the shows and the Help-Slip-Franklin's , just sweet music and friends all around..... wow, I feel bad for the younger generations who never will get these kind of vibes and energy... thanks for the posting the video. and ... "may the 4 winds blow you safely home..."
The ONLY thing this is lacking is the reprise of the transition lick to finish it off after the last solo instead of the fade-out, but it was so joyous and in the moment I suspect they probably just forgot and finished Franklin’s the way they were used to at that point lol. That would have been the perfect cherry on top of the return of the full H>S>F suite, but Oh well...always a hoot.
We suspected when added as the warlocks going to be good i was first couple of rows i seen the wolf sitting there then i knew we in for something special
The intangible inexplicable enigma of the Grateful Dead with Jerry. I'm so glad for those times I saw them. Paradise waits.

I was about 17 rows behind you Jerry side. This run of shows was 1 of my favorite few days ever!
No one was expecting China Cat. We were ALL expecting something special. And we got it! 2 nights at The Band Formerly Called The Warlocks!
Such an incredible bust-out for these Warlock shows. I know (in a past life) that I was there rowdy and cheering away the dew...
God save the child....The Wolf howls!!! 🎸 Excellent Franklin's!

89 was definitely the best year,
they still had Brent
I miss him so much
Me too... the Brent / Jerry combo was just a beautiful thing.

It's so great to see that after almost 30 years together, that they still enjoy playing Help>Slip>Franklins & love that wry grin from Jerry.
People who know the Grateful Dead but never heard anything by them, this is what you show them 👏
I love the year, love the venue, love the guitar and love the song (s). long live the Grateful Dead

These Hampton shows were and are OUTSTANDING. They're their best shows verified with every listening.

fall of 89 changed my life forever
Me too
Mine and many other peoples as well brother. TRULY epic year
It sure did! Cheers.

when they speak of the rare x-factor show we chase, this is what they're talking about, sustained for an entire show!

Your eyes looked through your mother's face
Wildflower seed on the sand and stone
May the four winds blow you safely home
Roll away, the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew
Roll away, roll away the dew

Roll away, roll away the dew
God save the child who rings that bell
I may have one good ring baby, you can't tell

If you get confused just listen to the music play
Some come to laugh their past away
Some come to make it just one more day
Whichever way your pleasure tends
If you plant ice you're gonna harvest wind
Roll away, the dew

Kaleidoscope of sound. Who could write an arrangement like that!?!?!

Really good!
So .... don't know if people remember the free show in D.C. on the Mall supporting affordable housing with Tracy Chapman, Indigo Girls .... and many other greats!!!!???
The interplay between Jerry and Brent during Slipknot!!!! HoooooooeLeeeeee Fuck!!!!!!!!!
Phil Lesh's volume in the mix is really working for me here.
And the sweet Franklin's intro out of Slipknot! circa '76.
In fact, they let the Wolf out that Fall of '89. Heard it run round Philly.
True ..
So many yeps.
Q pena q las cámaras se olviden de Brent Mydland!!!
fantastic night. next night was even more incredible

Man that's the real f****** deal right there
This is cool ..... Thanks Lolo .....
This was about the time in college when I was experimenting with acid and mushrooms
Are you sure they weren’t experimenting with you?😎😊

I'm glad they made this song about the U.S.S. Liberty
Man that’s good. They weren’t done just yet
Behold! The Wolf.

Yup yup yup. BUFFALO 1993. Sort of remember it.
Bobby shredding some solos in the background with his volume turned down?
... without LO ve in a "your" dream it will never come 2 B...
✌🏽
How do they know to put the ad at the precise starting point of Franklin's? Evil little tech elves
Me thinks there is an edit at about 4:30!
10/14 smokes this version. A lot less rust.
