This video illustrates weaving narrow bands from the book The Art of Simple Band Weaving and shows narrow bands being woven on a back strap and rigid heddle, a Swedish band loom, a rigid heddle loom, an inkle loom and a box loom. The book contains patterns for over 150 bands and describes how you can design your own woven pieces.

Thank you, Susan, for this introduction to band weaving looms! I learned more about how they work watching your video than looking at the different band loom websites.

May 2020 I have just finished running an online weaving workshop about striped bands. . I wanted to reach out to people in these difficult times. Weavers from 16 countries took part. All the booklets which I wrote for the workshop are freely available to download and include patterns striped bands from different countries. shop.stoorstalka.com/en/products/workshop/ Stoorstalka also ship world wide if you need wool or equipment.
Happy weaving and keep safe in these difficult times Susan J Foulkes

Thank you for this video. I have a cricket loom and really didn't want to get another piece of equipment at this time to make straps for my bags.

Hi I also have a cricket loom. Remember that the heddle should be used as near to the rear of the loom as possible. I wind the warp onto the rear warp beam through the heddle. Use the shuttle to beat. The band is narrow and the warp needs to be pulled in. happyweaving Susan

Thank you ,Durham weaver...there is a lady coming over 4m Ireland to learn the Loinloom weaving/Backstrap weaving in March or April.
It's a very tedious job & weavers earn so less. However, some very wise friends of mine are trying to make it into an organised sector & get the products into branded fashion houses so that loinloom weaving is not lost .
They make waistcoats/cushion covers, table runners & bags.
    They are beautiful.
check 4th Loinloom festival of Nagaland or *exotic echo* on youtube.

Another excellent video! I would just have one comment to make: not all Rigid Heddle looms are as sturdy as the Knitters Loom so they may not take the tension required for band-loom weaving if used regularly. But then, if you are making bands regularly, a dedicated loom is the way to go!

come to Nagaland...north east India...we weave shawls & traditional wrap-around worn by females by loinloom ..using very indigenous tools made of wood & bamboo.
There is just a few such methods in the world.

I use the band width checker to ensure that the weaving even width. Adjusting the weft makes the band wider or narrower. To adjust the width, pull in the weft to make the band narrower. I hope that this helps.

Do you have a favourite loom to use? I’m dwelling on a band loom, but it makes me wonder if people get kinks in their back, always weaving slightly to one side.

      Hi Tara
I love my Swedish band loom for weaving narrow bands. For simple warp faced plain weave it is a delight and the bands weave very quickly. Yes you do need to think about posture, but I have been using this loom for many years and I have not problem with sitting sideways to weave. Traditionally, the loom is used with the weaver facing the long edge but I found that this was difficult. Be posture aware and get up and stretch occasionally. Don't weave for long periods - everyone needs a coffee break!

I purchased your book on simple band weaving on blurb but I can’t open it from the download. I can only view it in a browser and I can’t print any of it other than with a screen shot. Did you mean to do this?

The ebook is supported by Apple and opens on an IPAd. I am not sure if it can be opened on another platform. Perhaps you could contact Blurb to see if they will refund you or for advice. Sorry.

Ms Foulkes it's always a pleasure to view one of your videos. I always learn so much. I have your previous two books on band weaving in eBook format and wanted to inquire if there as to the possibility of this new book being released on Blurb.com in eBook format as well? I also wonder if you'd mind sharing the brand name and possibly a way to acquire the Swedish Band loom you show in the video? Thank you and Kind Regards.

      Hi Bob
Thank you for your kind comments. I intended to bring out an ebook at the same time but there are problems at Blurb. Hopefully it will be solved soon.
The band loom is the first loom I bought and was made by Robert Myrehed. The nearest equivalent is now made by Glimakra in Sweden. gavglimakra.se/ They give a list of stocklists around the world but not everyone has this loom. It is sometimes called a belt loom.
I will be running an online workshop on patterned band weaving early next year for the Braid Society discussion group Braids and Bands. Anyone can join in.
      I hope this helps.
      Susan

what are the long skinny bands of fabric used for?

    • @durhamsilkweaver
      @durhamsilkweaver  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Dear Joanna There is a list on my blog which shows just how versatile these bands are.
These include: personalised luggage straps/handles, luggage tabs, bookmarks, towel tags, curtain tabs, key fobs and lanyards. Lanyards are not just useful for name badges but also for keys, whistles etc.
Other uses: collars for pets; leads and leashes; guitar straps; curtain tie backs; textile jewellery, e.g, chokers, collars and wrist straps, belts and garment trims.
A delicate silk band would make a lovely personal touch for a bridal bouquet or fastening on a special present.
Here is the link to my blog page durhamweaver64.blogspot.co.uk/p/uses-for-woven-bands.html
