The “high school” is the Dillon courthouse. It was donated by my Great grandmother Marjorie Bowling. She was born inside that building in 1908. Here’s the catch. It’s not in its original spot. The original spot was east of town in Dillon, Missouri. This building is where Phelps county was founded!
I was born in Rolla, Missouri on Nov. 10, 1951. We lived in Rolla till I was 5 years old. I always enjoyed visiting relatives there through out the years. Always was proud of Rolla and its history.
Another Great Video Brian 👍🥰 lots of very interesting things to film at this location, Thanks for showing us around, we enjoyed watching, stay safe & have a good week 👍🥰🤩🇬🇧
I had to check your channel out after you came by ours😊 This is a cool town and we go through Mo often as we go to Kansas and Arkansas. I love quirky roadside things nice find! New friend here and I will be back to watch more👍🏻👍🏻😊 nice work
I just ran across this video and enjoyed it, and thought I'd share a few bits of information on some of the things you took a look at in the video. The Stonehenge replica was the idea of a couple of professors from the University of Missouri - Rolla (now known as Missouri University of Science and Technology, or Missouri S&T, and previously the Missouri School of Mines), back in the early 1980s. It is a half-scale replica of the original in the UK. This Stonehenge is made of Missouri granite and the stones were carved by the university's Waterjet Lab. The dome you noticed is indeed an observatory, and it houses the university's 16 inch telescope. About once a month during the school year (weather permitting), they open up the observatory to the public for viewing of various things like the moon, Jupiter, or Saturn. The Phelps County Bank building was originally the Hotel Edwin Long, built in 1931 and is right on old Route 66. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. And finally, the old cabin that you thought was the high school is actually the Dillon Log House (as others have stated) and is home to the Phelps County Historical Society's museum. The stone "sign" out in front of the building is the cornerstone from the old high school, which used to stand on Cedar Street, a few blocks away.
Oh, my dad helped build that modern Stonehenge in Rolla, MO. I lived, worked, and went to school in Rolla. I am sure it changed a lot since I was there. Oh, the best flat bread pizza was off the main street . I was b and raised in St. James..ten miles East. Ppl like to think mid America r all dullards but almost all the kids I knew went on to graduate college. I visited the jail in a time when veg over grew it.
Pity the sun wasn't out so we could see, well, whatever we might have seen with "Stonehenge", wind direction measuring thing, telescope house possibly, the bank, very cool looking little town, the court houses old and new, cute tiny high school. I don't fancy being locked up in the original jail and the jail bird would agree I'm sure!!! I always enjoy these adventures Brian! Take care up there!
Enjoyed the video my Missouri neighbor, I don't get to Rolla very often, that jail looks like the one in Hermitage Mo, except the one in Hermitage is about half that size, good video brother 💯👍🏼
I'm joining Missouri Institute of Science and technology in the coming spring intake and this video some-what gave me an idea of how Rolla looks like. Thanks for the video man...keep it up!!
Hahaha. I always remember Rolla as the place I'd first find a Steak n Shake when heading back to Missouri from Texas. Otherwise I never explored the place. Even though the Stonehenge is a little unimpressive compared to the original, it would be neat to be able see it during the stated days.
My mom's hometown...She was part of the 'Haas' clan...They actually renamed the road they lived on 'Haas Road' She went to a one room school that was still up in 70's...but...they didn't live in town...so their school was literarily across the way over a creek and up some hills and over fences...it was fun to go there almost every visit...then my mom built a house on land Grandpa gave her...so we were there a lot...it's a nice all weather home... And btw it is a 'Engineer Town'
Hi Brian sorry I’m late but it’s so hard trying to get around my true friends but I will always get to you I really appreciate you as our family and I mean that from the bottom of my heart thanks for the tour Brian wow that’s a old looking building oh it’s a jailhouse amazing really enjoyed your adventures thumbs up and a full view 👍
Interesting Stonehenge. That domes room is used for a telescope. Fine buildings. The Lockup looks solid! The new Public buildings look great Brian. have a great day buddy, Thank you for sharing.
Looks like an old town jail with the pillars of stone as a landmark, it's a good place to visit in Rolla Missouri. Thanks for sharing the virtual tour.
Interesting Stone Henge - looks like a sundial of sorts I would think? The high school and jail look quite small. Love historic buildings. Good share. Sending good vibes your way from your friends at POSITIVE MIND DYNAMICS
Funny, I've only been to Stonehenge twice and it was raining both times! Odd but it would be interesting to see it in the sun, I think! ha ha Nice town. Love that old high school and jail.
Stone Hedge replica is pretty cool. That is awesome that it is functional also. Definitely strange. That Bank had an old school sign. Really nice area you discovered. I bet that old jail has lots of stories.
Cool.. that's the closest I'd get to Stone Henge! Yeah that looks like an old school bank.. and that jail/courthouse.. yeah I'm sure there's stories behind them.. interesting!
I find this fascinating. I became curious about Rolla, while giving the Arthur L. Bradford prize for excellence in Shakespeare studies at Buffalo State College in Buffalo New York. Arthur Lenox Bradford grew up in Rolla but came to Buffalo where he served on the college faculty from 1947-1973 and was chair of the English department from 1947-1957. He was a Shakespearean Scholar and taught courses in Milton, Elizabethan drama, and Victorian prose and poetry. Professor Bradford also initiated and taught courses in the literature of the Bible and served as the faculty advisor to the Inter-varsity Christian Fellowship. He was gifted writer whose short stories and essays were published in the Yale Review and Peabody Journal of Education. Professor Bradford was devoted to Buffalo State, and even endowed a generous scholarship here, but when he died, he had his remains returned to Rolla! Seeing the town, and places that would have been familiar to Professor Bradford gives me an understanding of why he felt so connected to that place. Thank you for the video.
I live here now and this is a neat town and if you want to, go on back roads because they have awesome history and ask locals about the stories of this town.
I always like watching your videos. Seems like you're always going places I never even knew existed. I've sent you an email and do hope to hear from you soon.
An interesting video! I always like going through small towns with their original facades. If you are ever in Washington State, Maryhill, by the Columbia River, has a reproduction of Stonehenge made of concrete. And in Georgia, east of Athens and near the South Carolina border, are the Georgia Guidestones. They also use angles and cutouts to capture the sun at certain times of year. Just found both of those last year. Keep up the good work of finding and showing us these unique places!
the old building you believed to be a school is actualyl the first county courthouse...it was on my garandparents land out in dillion township off of old st. james road...i played in it as a child until it was donated to the county and moved

You got me curious so I pull up the raw video and zoomed in. That big stone plaque said high school and there was another stone that was harder to read and I think it said Rolla lodge. That’s how I got the idea it was a high school. I just read the sign.

Cool little town. I like the breaker box just inside the jail. I knew as soon as I saw it that you’d say something about it.
Also noticed your hat. Is that a new addition or did I miss it in an earlier video?
I couldn't help myself 🤪 Thanks for watching 👍
The hat is a story. I tried 3d printing the patch. Now I bought a embroidered hat looks a little better.
