    This song is part of a concept album called The Downward Spiral, where it's main charachter experiences different levels of degradation through it's journey in his addictions, religious hypocrisy, hate, alienation, angst and loneliness. It should be listen as a whole thing to work better but some songs are fire for themselves like March of the Pigs, Ruiner, Heresy, Mr Self Destruct, Closer, The Becoming and Reptile. But this is a song about someone who hates themselves and finds an escape in mindless sex. This is in no way a happy party song either. @squeeblzmaloney4290 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      This is actually a singular act in a 'play' of sorts. The entire album is a concept piece. Long story short, being hated God, believes God to be corrupt, kills God, then becomes God. This is the portion where they're realizing that their godlike power allows them the same opportunities of corruption, but aren't recognizing that they're on the same track to becoming the very God they hated. A later track actually describes their desire to be killed for becoming exactly what it was that they despised. Really intense album to be consumed as a whole.

      @@eroccha I love NIN but just look at the album credits. Pretty Hate Machine was produced by some of Trent's most idolized producers and recorded in studios around the world. The input of producers like Flood and Adrian Sherwood are the reason Trent's sound advanced from Purest Feeling to Pretty Hate Machine. Trent has always had collaborators like Chris Vrenna on Downward Spiral, Robin Finck on The Fragile, and Atticus Ross on every album since then. Ross is actually now considered a full member of NIN. Trent has always had 100% creative control over NIN but he's had a lot of collaborators along the way and he's never denied that.

      Yeah but NIN is since 2005 a former band i think that Trent started working with other people after what he had to went through in The Fragile era where (i don't know if you already knew) he almost killed himself, i mean he went through a lot of shit in that period where he was all by himself and he started working with other people in studio and now he works most of the time with Atticus Ross, but you can even see pictures of the actual membes working together it's a 5 guys band now and i'm kinda glad of that i'm glad that Trent opened his mind to a lot more than his own ideas (Nothing against that obviously, he made a lot of epic songs all by himself)

    It's not supposed to be sexy when you get past the surface level. The album it's from, The Downward Spiral, is about a guy breaking himself down mentally and emotionally with debauchery and drugs and shit, and Closer specifically is about reaching that point where he's using sex as escapism from his feelings, and it's just not about being in a good place in your head. Most of the NIN albums had some kind of story to tell behind them, but there's no bad songs from them.

    Trent Reznor (the head guy of NIN, everyone else comes and goes), is more of a composer than just a typical rock musician. Over his entire catalog (including Oscar winning movie scores) I don’t think anyone in my lifetime has as much range. He’s very experimental I’m a bit of a fan.
    Btw, Trent made Manson and nearly the entire genre spawned off of NIN. I would never call it metal, straight industrial is better. And I would define “industrial” as kind of a darker, harder take on 80s synth.
    As influential as any musical artist in my lifetime. Still cracks me up when going on 30 years later you will here NIN, a NIN derivative, or a NIN cover being used in movie trailers and the like. It’s like they can’t find anything as good that’s newer.
    EDIT/PS: since this blew up a bit, I’ll make some NIN suggestions:
    More metalish ones: “Head Like a Hole”, “Burn”, “March of the Pigs”, “Ruiner”, “We’re in This Together”
    On the other side of the spectrum: “Terrible Lie”, “Down in it”, “Only”
    And they have a ton kinda in between those above categories. A lot of 90s emo, heart wrencher songs
    And my two personal favorites are just instrumentals “Just Like You Imagined” and “Leaving Hope”.

    the production is so unique, that it is timeless. It still sounds fresh for that reason. And cant be labelled as 90s by its sound design alone. The video itself is a an artistic moodboard, not really an expansion on the lyrics.

      Eric cha Ministry was making pop music when Skinny Puppy came around. Ministry didn’t get crazy until parts of The Land of Rape And Honey, which came out after most of the classic Skinny Puppy albums by years. Godflesh gave Ministry a lot, especially on Filth Pig. That might as well be a Godflesh album.

    This is a very romantic love song 😈 NIN is basically just Trent Reznor, who is a DJ, programmer and musician. He wrote the song "Hurt" by Johnny Cash that you reviewed. Trent Reznor admitted Cash did it better. Trent Reznor produced Marilyn Mansons breakthrough album. Trent has won an Oscar for movie scores and contributed to Ken Burns documentaries. The video is crazy and I think it is distracting you from the song itself. Trent was purposely trying to get banned from MTV so they would stop asking him to make videos.

    • @bigguy1164
      @bigguy1164 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Trent Reznor admitted Cash did it better."
      No he didn't. He said it was cheesy idea until he watched the video. He then said it felt like someone stole his girlfriend from him. Since when is that a compliment in any context. The old man was dying, what was he going to do or say besides be nice.

    • @michaelvondrake7489
      @michaelvondrake7489 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      big guy Totally not true. You are un-informed. Trent Reznor said several times "Johnny Cash owns the song now". Trent met with Cash before the re-recording, heard the rehearsals and gave Cash expressed personal permission for the song. Many hard rock and heavy metal musicians were present in the studio as Cash recorded it. You need to go back and read up on the topic.

    • @bigguy1164
      @bigguy1164 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not how it went at all. Rubin approached Reznor to see if Cash could do a cover, Reznor didn't get it until he was in the studio with Zach De La Rocha when the video finally dropped. He found it moving and it made him and Zach teary eyed, but he never fucking said he owned the song now. He said it wasn't his any more not literally, but out of respect. Stop head canoning it to justify why you like the Cash version better than Reznor's.
      I will say this though. Age puts more weight to the song, and yes Cash dying with Hurt being his swan song is powerful compared to what was released in 1994. Reznor was 28ish at the time and his worst days were actually ahead of him not the other . The older he gets, the more powerful it becomes.

      Brian Kennedy - I don't know, though. They get into some rougher shit than I think people tend to give them credit for. On paper, those dudes should not be Gojira fans, for example. Also, I think the piano interludes would get 'em. They get me every time. As much as I like how March goes hard, that little piano lick is my favorite part.

      Really, though, they don't have to like it. I tend to like their videos whether they like a song I like or not. Or even when they like stuff I don't like. Honestly do you really think that these artist put these songs out for us to go over it tooth and nail and try to dissect the meaning of every sentence. Hell no, they put them out for us to enjoy and in listening if it helps us cope in some way then that's fantastic. If you over think and analyze every damn word of a song, your missing out on some good shit. Just sit back and enjoy, that's what music is here for. Anyone that knows music knows that some of the best shit came from some of the darkest of times and places. It's simple, you either love it or hate it. I myself love it!!!!

    You want industrial "metal" (and I've loved NIN since the '90's too) you gotta listen to MINISTRY or check out some KMFDM

      Definitely good calls as well...and Skinny Puppy, but MINSTRY (Al Jourgensen) are the undisputed kings of industrial...but let us not forget great bands like MUSHROOMHEAD

      @@mskarin7393 Sweet taste in music! I worked as a Dominatrix for over a decade (before I blew my whip arm out), and I always *loved* the BDSM aesthetic in NIN's music and videos. This song got too overplayed to use as dungeon music, but damn, if the girls and I didn't groove to it after work, and dream of Trent Reznor showing up at our place of employment! XD

    Marilyn Manson was signed on his record label by Trent Reznor of NIN. Manson was in the band for a short time.

    They're industrial rock with hints of Avant Garde. They cut from the same cloth as bands like Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, Joy Division, Einsturzende Neubeutan, Ministry, and Skinny Puppy.

    Guys, singer, Trent Reznor, is also founder of Nine Inch Nails wrote the song, "Hurt". He sang the song, but Trent loves Johnny Cash's version.
