I love my enigma quilt.
I am a super cold sleeper, short and have 2 small doggos that like to crawl into the covers with me.
I was able to get the short, wide, 0°F and in my crazy colour scheme of red on the inside, purple and green on the outside.
I have been using backcountry camping and road tripping and it has held up to the abuse. At 26 oz's it compresses down to smaller then a basket ball.
I'm so glade that you have started talking about ethics, it's up there with comfort on my prioritise list. So thank you for including it in your reviews

Thanks Justin for the helpful review. Sincerely appreciate your sizing advice: Which length would you recommend if you're on the edge of EE's length sizing? For example, an EE Regular Length is supposed to fit height 5 ft 6 in. tall to 6 ft tall, and a Long is supposed to fit 6 ft - 6 ft 6 in. tall. If you are a 6 ft tall side and back sleeper, would you order a Regular or Long length? If you are a 5 ft 6 in. tall side and back sleeper, would you order a Short or Regular length? In both cases, width would be Wide. Thank you! (Asking because I've seen a 5 ft 9 in. tall user say he wouldn't want his Regular length any shorter, which may mean you should size up if you are right on the edge).

Hi Justin, great video as always. Have you done a comparison between the Nemo tensor and the Sea to Summit etherlight xt? I’m considering getting one or the the other. Im 5’10”, 42” chest and an active side sleeper. So would be looking at getting the wider version. Any thoughts as someone who has experienced both?
I will be doing a review comparing the two at some point! There is a lot to dive into with both! Sorry it's not out yet!
How does your enigma do with condensation from your body? I woke up at own point with quite a bit of moisture beading on top of me, and it wasn’t from my tent. I had to pack it up wet in the morning.

Yay!! I ordered mine in May and can't wait for it to get here. I am skeptical it will be as warm as my Katabatic, buuut this is the first quilt or bag I have ever ordered in a 'short'. Hopefully that helps with keeping me warm.

@@rickguthrie7662 I love it. I tend to sleep really cold and it keeps me warm. I would say the drawstring closure is the same as any other I have tried. I wouldn't say it repels water? But have never tested that.

Thermarest Vesper Ultralight Backpacking Quilt and this one, which one is better?
I get too hot in sleeping bags and got myself a Snugpak Jungle Blanket. Its great for spring and summer (so far). I'd love to get a quilt but I'm worried it will be too warm for me.
Just get the appropriate temp rating!
How do you block the eye without having something tight strapping to your eye / head?

That does seem problematic! I prefer a hat over a hood, but it is all personal preference - a quilt isn't necessarily for everyone!

I wouldn't use a compression sack with it. It's better to not compress down as much as possible - it will then loft up quicker and better.
I'm trying to decide to get the Enigma Quit or the Badit from UGQ. Any help?
Has it ever turned into a snow globe on you? I have a quilt from UGQ where every time I wake up from a night sleep, my tent is full of down feathers. Maybe I just chose the wrong fabric, but now I'm looking for a new quilt.
Now that you have EE quilts, what do you think of your thermarest vesper? I'm considering the vesper due to better availability/price in Europe.
The Vesper is an amazing quilt, just wasn't quite warm enough for me. If Thermarest made a 20F comfort rated quilt and that was what I had, I probably wouldn't have switched to the EE.
Nice review! Wanted to throw in a quick comparison with the ZPacks Quilt I recently picked up. Very similar overall impression. The design is nearly identical. I have the same gripe with their cinch cord placement. They use the same style pad strap system, but also use those flat buckles at the neck rather than the snaps on the EE. This is one of their two pad strap attachment points though, where it looked like EE has two strap points, plus the snaps at the neck? I actually love the buckles at the neck, as I can adjust the pad strap positioning between very open or closed under me right at the top of the Quilt, even above my head if I strap the Quilt above my pillow. Lastly, there's a customize-ability vs cost tradeoff. Zpacks has only 3 temp ratings, 3 lengths, and 3 widths, compared the EE's 5 in each I believe (maybe 6 temps?). Zpacks also doesn't offer the draft collar add on, or choice of down fp and fabric weights/colors. However, zpacks uses 950 fp down, and 7D fabric by default, and at a lower cost than an equivalent enigma. So if you were already leaning towards those specs, zpacks is a pretty safe bet!
A couple other differences to note: Zpack uses 900fp as a default not 950fp. Zpacks also uses treated down where EE uses untreated. Differences in baffle designs as well!
Awesome summary! Like you said, if the specs/features of the zpacks lines up with what you are looking for, might as well save the $$$ and go with it!
I’m also 5’10 and I’m thinking about wide regular vs large as EE reccomends getting larger size for side and stomac sleepers. You Are still happy with its lenght or would you like it a bit longer? Thanks!🙋♀️
Regular length is perfect for me. The regular width is also good for me for EE quilts but the wide is roomy if you want that.
Good video and well explained. As a side sleeper, I will often tuck my kness up to alleviate lower back pain. Will the quilt perform well in that situation?
I have a nemo riff which does ok with the spoon shape. But doesn't competently solve my problem.
I'm 70% side sleeper when backpacking and often pull my knees up as well. With a wide pad, I find it's great with a quilt. That's my favorite thing about quilts, it is so much easier to maneuver around when compared to the constricting nature of a sleeping bag!
Hi Justin just trying to confirm that the baffles are really blocked off, as this is what EE responded in reply to the same question, "The baffles are connected in a U shape!"
This does not seem like they are blocked off.
Oh and they also said they had not heard of the snaps coming in.

In the quilt I review here, only the middle two baffles are connected (in a U-shape). All other vertical and horizontal baffles are isolated. Maybe they changed this since I did the review? I'd be curious to know!
Hi Justin, could you please tell me why do you prefer the Enigma over the Vesper, since you had both? As I'm from Europe, shipping and duty fees are defiantly a down side of the cottage manufactures from the US.
The warmest vesper has a comfort rating of 0C and that isn't warm enough for me. That is the main reason as the Vesper is a great quilt for temps above freezing!
I really appreciate the info on ethics and sustainability... currently saving up to buy one of these quilts and as a vegan in every other element I feel uneasy about purchasing down and wool products for camping gear... but when it comes down to it there's nothing else that can do the job the same way. It's nice to know that they do everything they can with regards to ethics!
It seems like a catch 22. I plan on doing more research into it. But when you consider all the microplastics and waste from synthetic materials, is using down that would have been thrown out as a byproduct of the meat industry better. I listened to an interesting podcast that stated that the profit from down is 5% of what it is for the meat - so the number of geese and ducks dying for the meat industry likely wouldn't change if everyone stopped using down.

I have that same quilt but xl long, red outside navy interior, but did apex instead of down. I sold my EE revelation in down. Did the apex after owning their torid jacket and now a apex filled torid vest too. Only drawback of apex quilt, hard to compress right now. Bulky.
I love synthetic quilts but the bulk is a problem, especially once you get down to 20F or warmer!

Yeah I went with a cedar ridge outdoors after all the reports of under stuffed ee and the complaints on customer service
I haven't heard of an issue with under stuff or customer services in years with EE. I do think the under stuff issue had more to due to people not caring for their gear properly or being aware of how quickly down can lose its loft in certain conditions.

@@JustinOutdoors Have you tried both? I like the extra options that UGQ offers, like additional overstuff, dynamic tension control, and overstuffed footbox. Still deciding tho between EE, UGQ, and the HG burrow
How does this compare to the thermarest quilt you reviewed?
Comparable quality, not as warm since the warmest vesper is only a comfort rating of 30F

the neck cinch in the front is a bummer! Its a shame they haven't changed that yet

@@JustinOutdoors I am getting ready to place on order for a quilt - considering UGQ since the cinch is on the side - but the UGQ down fill is about 2 oz. less than EE (unless I add the overfill for +$26.00)
Hey. Did you replace your sts Ether light with a tensor?
He mentioned in his most recent new gear video that he was testing the tensor for this year. Better warmth/weight ratio... But maybe not as comfy.

I have eather light and small tensor for my daughter. I find tensor more quiet, same comfort (even less prone to wobbling) but less beefy. Also customer reviews are full of failed tensor pads, what rise some concerns to me.

Less than 10L for sure. I usually pack my down products pretty loose so they loft back up quicker and better when I get to camp!

Sooo. Vesper or this?
My super helpful answer is depends! If the vesper had a comfort rating of -6C, I would be using that quilt primarily as it is high quality, a decent price, and easy to get (when there aren't covid inventory shortages). The Enigma is an amazing quilt as well and more customizable, not much more expensive, and you can get it so that is is much warmer than the warmest vesper option.
Both great quilts, can't go wrong with either.

@@kirkgulick Depends on the Enigma options you choose. An enigma with 7d material and 950 CUIN will pack down smaller than the vesper but the vesper will pack down smaller than a 10d/850CUIN enigma since the vesper uses 10d but has 900 CUIN down.
