I am very happy that Gengar is officially Ash's Pokémon, and also gets a lot of screen time too. Gengar is my favorite Pokémon of all time.

Ash’s Gengar is the definition of a glass cannon. While it can dish out a ton of damage, it really can’t take a hit

Journeys really did Ash justice, I wouldn’t have thought Ash getting a Lucario, Dragonite and Gengar before this series. He’s portrayed as an elite trainer at this point which is so good and makes sense since he is officially a champion. On the other hand though, Goh got so much hate.
Definitely a great lineup, I just hope they all keep getting exposure. Sirfetch'd needs an epic win

Hey man if I wanted to watch and catch up but not watch all the lamer stuff where would I start? Should I just start with Pokemon Journeys flat out? I've watched Kanto, Johto, a little bit of Diamond/Pearl and most of the Alola island stuff. Is Pokemon Journey's next? Should I just skip anything in between Alola and Journeys because it will be lame?

The charmander t-shirt ash was wearing while catching gengar was a callback to ash’s charizard which was left by its first trainer, so for gengar too

Very interesting how Ash has a Charmander on his shirt (4:27) when catching Gengar considering the similar backstory the two pokemon had. Whether Gengar becomes an ace or not, it got a happy ending and a trainer who will never give up on it.

When I saw the episode that introduced Ash’s Gengar, it made me sad seeing the Gengar just sitting on the steps smiling for years while he waited for his trainer to come back.
That scene was super sad :(
It reminds me of that episode of Futurama with the dog waiting for Fry. It sucker punched me right in the feels.

Gengar is my favorite pokemon and its backstory is an absolute punch to the gut.
I absolutely love that Ash caught a Gengar. While I still need to watch the Journeys series, it makes me excited, knowing that Ash builds such a powerful team throughout the series. :)
Gengar + Dragonite + Mega Lucario = Epic!
Gengar has always been my favorite Pokemon since I was a kid. I was always told he was a bad character and evil. But he's not. Despite what the Pokedex entires may say, the Pokedex is written by a human, and one susceptible to fear. I think Gengar's kinda like the Possum of the Pokemon world. They're feared but they're actually super sweet creatures.

When I was a kid back in like '03, here in Argentina when you bought Lay's chips they had a chance to come with some kind of sticky rubbery pokémon with a ring attached to it that you could throw and it would stick in the fridge and then come back to you. The only one I ever got was Gengar, and it has been my favorite ever since. I was like 6 years old
I'm assuming the creators just kind of forgot Ash has a Haunter already, it would have been very nice to have seen that one come back and while admittedly I haven't been keeping up with journeys, when I heard he got a Gengar, I originally thought it was the one he caught back in the day.

That’s what I came down into the comment section to search for; was it Ash’s Haunter that evolved into Gengar or not.
Ash, never catched Haunter, he just followed him, and he stayed with Sabrina after Ash "Defeated" her.

I always saw the short where this Gengar was abandoned by its owner, and it bothered me, but now that I have a good closure it's safe to say that thanks to Ash he now found a happy place for himself.
Just wait till I do the second half of this video next year, the story gets even more epic, with Ash's old Pokemon returning as its mentor

I was not expecting Gengar at this point in Journeys but I guess we could call this "Haunter month" with the classes prior. Gengar is such a cool Pokemon and I'm happy Ash has one. I just hope it gets those wins it deserves. Just.....keep it away from taking too much damage.

Hopefully, Gengar gets more screen time and battle victories soon. It is one of the best ghost types around. Right now, Lucario has the spotlight... It can change though.

I see Gengar as a pivot in Ash's team.. Gengar might not KO many opponents but I have faith that Gengar can make the opponent's team weak enough for the rest to do their job.. but yeah, Gengar is surely a powerhouse in my eyes

The fact that Ash is caught a Gengar, Lucario and a Dragonite is insane. What the Fearow! Lucarios also been my favorite Pokémon for as long as I can remember so seeing it sorta become ash’s ace of the series is awesome.

Why do I feel like Gengar was the writer's way of apologizing about Ash only having Haunter briefly? Honestly a missed opportunity for a callback to Ash's Haunter evolving or something after Sabrina.
I think that's part of the equation, but Gengar is also super, super marketable
i'm actually glad that this gengar is different than sabrina's haunter. current series should be able to stand on its own without relying too much on nostalgia vibe.

When you think about it its pretty cool how all of this built up, Ash and his friends dealt with a talking Gastly during the festival episode in season one, during the events with Sabrina, Ash temporarily partnered up with a Haunter and now Ash officially owns a Gengar

that built up took >20 years for its fruition. it's too far-fetched to think it's a deliberate act from the writers.
when i saw ash finally got a gengar, dragonite and lucario i wept some major inner tears of joy..... gengar is just such a joy. we all have a bit of that mischievousness inside us, which is why we find that so relatable. also probably for us ole timers that watched season 1 it's a dream come true. hope to see both dragonite and lucario make it to a vid one day. they both have so much great potential, cmon writers don't leave us hanging!

Ghost types have a lot of superstition in the Pokemon world. It makes sense the trainer would wonder if he was cursed since so many ghosts are mean spirited.
That said it was most likely his own inability as a trainer that led him down that road

Gengar was always a favorite in Pokémon and I’m glad with the recent fan service season they were able to have ash capture one. I’d like to think it’s his old Haunter but probably not. But if he was going to finally unofficially capture a ghost Pokémon this is the best one.

I always loved it whenever ghost types were shown as goofy and friendly esprcially to Ash, so one finally belonging to Ash with character development, as an important and powerful character even going as far as learning moves he usually couldn't makes me so happy

Happy Halloween, Professor! It took 8 Gens but Ash finally caught a Gengar! Had Rowlet evolved to Decidueye, it probably would have been its second Ghost type Pokemon. You choosen an awesome Pokémon for this holiday!

Since Ash caught it, Gengar toned his trouble making down to jump scares and sneaky little mischief.
I love the analysis, it's so great to see this kind of material available about my favorite pokemon type. If I could ever be a pokemon trainer it would be a ghost pokemon trainer because I think they are the absolute coolest pokemon in the entire pokemon world/Universe. Ash's Gengar could be perfectly paired with the Ghastly from Maidens Peak.
Ghost-type training would be tons of fun. I'd love a Mimikyu
i love how Ash has met a Gastly, caught a Haunter, and finally caught a Gengar. This has to be one of ashes best lineups since the OG days of Indigo league.

The things ghost Pokémon can do are so op that I'm surprised every evil team doesn't use them. They learn hypnosis, go invisible, and phase through objects. Best of all since officer Jennys don't use fairy/dark Pokémon they would be great security for secret bases.

@@ProfessorAlexSilver that and we mostly see the phase through objects and invisibility thing from shorten ghost types like gengar and driftbloom we'll I don't think we seen many other recent ghost types have that ability or at least don't seem to use it as much as gengar evolution line dose unless there something I haven't seen yet from pokemon journeys showing this from all ghost pokemon
Also most ghost types are still considered scary in the pokemon universe even in the modern society were pokemon are generally not considered as scary as they use to and if there pokedex entries are true there usually dangerous and scary
Idt all ghost types phase through objects ...
And psychic pokemon are stronger than ghosts
Despite the pokedex entries, the evolutionary line for gengar tend to pretty jolly unless there's something that happened to them.

With the first Pokemon games I played (Blue & Silver), Gengar (and to be fair Alakazam) were almost Mythical to me! I didn't have anyone to trade with so they were unattainable for me. Later when I bought a second game system, I could trade with myself!

I was happy to see ash have gengar , lucario and dragonite. He's had an affinity with most ghost types. He has the ability to sense aura, so lucario was no brainer. He dfinitely had an affinity with dragonair (which evolved into dragonite). Its come full circle.

i hope Ash's gengar will get major redemption soon, after it G-MAX, and become his strongest ghost type. it is strong. it's helped ash get to the ultra class, and will get him to the masters 8. i wish gengar had been the one to beat volkner's rotom instead of lucario.

OMG , youre right. Torterra is a strong pokemon its just that they are sticking with Ash being good with fast pokemon which I hated while Palpitoad deserved to evolve.
@@miraclesan3259 Yeah I kind of wish Brock would have his Torterra. It wouldn't get more screen time, but Brock's battle styles fit it way more. Then again I'm not even sure if Brock is still relevant as a character since I haven't watched for years.
I think as ash uses Gengar more he'll get a better feel for it.
Some of the losses seemed like ash didn't fully understand Gengar yet just my opinion
What do you mean ended 20 years of precedent? He had a haunter in season one, for a short time anyways. It agreed to join him and is the reason he beat sabrina...again in theory considering he barely beat anyone...they usually just gave up and badged him out of pity. And before you throw a fit and say he never caught haunter in a ball, He never caught Pikachu in a ball either. So... no this would be his second ghost pokemon.
.....ash's actually owns pikachu's ball. it just that ash knows pikachu hates being inside the pokeball,that he never used it. otherwise,pikachu would have same status like meowth,which isn't the case.
He never actually caught Haunter, so it's a technicality I suppose

To that I say, there are precious few pokemon ash actually "Caught". most of them just sort of followed him after their first encounters. In truth ash had many of what I call "plotymon" that lasted a few episodes then quietly vanished, haunter was one such plotymon.
Love this video and breakdown of Ash's Gengar. To this day, Gengar is my favorite Pokemon.

This is why I feel Journeys is better than most other generations. Doing every region through Kanto, and no elemental starters hogging ash's rosters. There are 18 types and Ash has mostly ignored the premium types like steel, ghost, dragon, psychic, fairy, dark. Elementals, Flying and Fighting have become too repetitive. This time there are two fighters but overall there is good variety. I just think if Ash defeat Leon this generation it would be anticlimactic as this is the first time his roster isn't noobish and won't set him back.
For me, XY & the OG series ar e the best, but I definitely like the Jounreys shake up
Ash's team is a powerhouse rn. Gengar, dragonite, Dracovish, Farfetch, Lucario and Pikachu? Might be his best team yet

Three losses isn’t that much and he has probably won like ten matches offscreen
I feel like offscreen matches should still count
Progress is still progress imho
It’ll get more screen time we just gotta be patient when they find the right moment
