    Just an FYI, this video was not sponsored by anyone. I suggested a lot of ASA because they offer a reasonable quality for the price, and if you never use them after getting your certificate they wont break the bank. They do print a lot of the books provided by the FAA as well.

    I recommend the flash cards. Each person learns differently. I used similar flash cards when I was in law school. I don't think I would have passed my courses without them. They work for me. They present the scenario, ask you to assess it. You develop your own assessment, and then compare it with the answers provided. This is a great learning system for me. Make your own decision if it works for you. Whatever you do, find what works for you, and use that to the fullest extent possible.

    @Fly With The Guys >>> Although NOT a book or other printed training aid, one thing I would suggest is taking some kind of _action cam_ to record your training flights. Afterward, you can review the video to help learn how to avoid any mistakes you made.

    Great work, Carl! Got myself a padded backpack from a local store for all my stuff where I can fit in a seat cussion as well as flight school don´t provide these and I´m not that big. And consider some action cams to record your flights as a reference work to learn a bit faster (and of course to make nice videos out of them ☺ ). I don't know ASA headsets, but there are more cheaper ones that are way better in (passive) reducing engine sounds than the more expensive ones.

    Does it make more sense for someone trying to learn prior to starting training to read the Airplane Flying Handbook before the Pilot Handbook or vice versa?

    • @flywiththeguys
      @flywiththeguys  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Between the two books, all the knowledge you’ll ever need is there. If you want to read them I would start with the Pilots Handbook. It will better prepare you for the knowledge test. Then the flying handbook, along side your training.

    The oral exam guide is not necessary. Just work your way through the ACS a few times. Print the ACS off of the FAA website-a physical copy is better. The oral exam guides are not great at Scenario Based Training-nothing beats face to face flight instruction where you instructor acts like the examiner...

    • @flywiththeguys
      @flywiththeguys  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had both. Read the book and had time with my instructor. Both were great. I recommended the book because it had a lot of questions that made me think about application of information in ways I hadn't thought before. Felt it could help others as well. But I did study the ACS a lot!

      There’s the written test and the checkride. The checkride consists of an oral portion and a flying portion. That’s it. Schools may have you do stage checks, which can feel like tests, but there not required by the FAA.

    • @yavarjn2055
      @yavarjn2055 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@flywiththeguys I am a little bit confused. FAA indicates that one should provide supervisor or instructor approval of class participation to be able to give written exams. I am under impression that I can read all the books by myself, do simulations without the school involvement. Then I register for the written exam, oral exam, and simulation evaluation. After passing these I register for the flight classes and if the instructor finds out that I am knowledgable he/she can certify that with minimum amount of flight time I am ready. Am I too far from reality? I find it too expensive to pay $15000+ to an aeroclub to teach me what I can learn on my own.I already got all the books, about 20 of them recommended by FAA. I already downloaded MIT private pilot ground school course. Also, downloaded more than 5 complete courses on instruments, etc. I am planning to buy SIMiONIC complete set for simulation for less than $5000 (also looking at Flight Sim Starter Kit from Sporty's or Thrustmaster TCA Yoke Pack Boing edition). I also bought a flight computer and ASA E6B. For simulator I am looking to buy FlightGear Flight Simulator 2022 5 DvDs. What are regulations or obligations after that? I just want to learn flying for recreational sport that keeps the door open for furthur study if necesary. By the way I would appreciate if you can suggest a kit that contains yoke, throttle and good pedals. Professional but affordable (preferably under $5000). It is so difficult to know what works best.

    I've watched this repeatedly throughout my training. I am at the very end, can confirm these are all the materials you need to get through it. The only items I didn't get were a sectional or terminal area chart, Ipad or EFB makes the cockpit more organized plus foreflight makes the weather very accessable anytime before flying. There are some other things I recommend.
    I would've invested in a flight bag so everything is neat in order. My equipment is getting in sort of rough shape.
    A test prep course is a very good supplement to get ready for the written. The FAA resources are very great. But I would prefer to use a software for written prep. I used gleim and it was great for private. (not commercial though, I took that today, did great though because I used another software with it that was cheaper!)
    If not, at least become familiar with the knowledge test supplement book. Gleim provides the charts, figures and diagrams on their test prep software. But review the testing supplement for sure.
    Other than that, can confirm that is everything.

      Yes. Foreflight is only on IPad unfortunately.

    I bought an Android tablet for this. Is there an alternative to Foreflight, for android that you could recommend? I'll ask my CFI next time I go in for training, but I would also like to hear from you on this.

      Check out iFlyGPS. Outside that, I'm not a good recourse. Foreflight is such a good app though, I would almost recommend picking up an iPad to run it.

    Do you have to use an iPad? I'm just starting to inquire about flight school and would love to use foreflight, but have never used apple. Are there other options?

    • @flywiththeguys
      @flywiththeguys  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are other options out there, but the iPad is really a great choice. Not much of a learning curve with it and Foreflight is an AMAZING tool.

    Hi What size of I Pad would you recommend - 7.9 or 10.1 would it matter or would the 10.1 be to big ? Thanks for your vids helping out lots Cheers

    • @flywiththeguys
      @flywiththeguys  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Mini. Others get too big and require a lot of space in the plane. The Mini can be mounted in a lot more places and is big enough to do everything you need.

      Probably not, especially in Alaska. Light sport has a lot of limitations. This is just my opinion though.

      These materials are for helping you pass the FFA Written Exam in the United States. Check your local government for rules and regulations to make sure you get the right materials for your test. They are still good books though for knowledge.

    serous question will microsoft flight simulator help in any way?
    also does the book the student's flight manual
    by william K. Kershner a good book to have to study?

    • @flywiththeguys
      @flywiththeguys  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flight simulators are good for a few things, like checklists, workflows, and even practicing comms these days. BUT, they are far different then actually flying a plane. The feelings, the stress, and your surroundings just cant be replicated. The FAA only allows you 2.5 hours towards your PPL using an approved sim for that very reason. I still play around in them for fun, and once you have your PPL you can use them to practice instrument work that wont count for anything, but help you develop skills you really can take back to the cockpit. I have FS2020 on preorder.... Now for the book, I have no idea. Never read it. I used the resources in here for reference in conjunction to an online course.

    Only thing I can think of is the Pilot’s Operating Handbook for the aircrafts you are flying. Weight and Balance questions, CG question’s, and some aircraft systems questions are going to come right out of that book. It would be in the aircraft, but having a nice PDF copy on your iPad or phone really helps prepare for the oral exam.

    • @flywiththeguys
      @flywiththeguys  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those would be other useful items. I had PDF versions on my iPad like you said. =)

    I would also add a fuel tester and maybe a flight bag, or just something carry everything. I personally have been using a backpack I got for free by signing up with AOPA.

    • @flywiththeguys
      @flywiththeguys  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Something to carry everything in is nice. I use a backpack right now too, but my need changed significantly as soon as I became a pilot. A fuel tester is great too. Our plane has one, but not all rental operations or schools keep them in the plane.

    Hello, I am going to turn 15 in September. And I want to become commercial pilot but I am wondering that what I have to start with ??

    • @flywiththeguys
      @flywiththeguys  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We always recommend going on a discovery flight first. This will help you understand if its right for you. Then, use the free resources in this video to learn as much as you can. Learning to become a pilot is more then just the flying part. Theres a lot of learning. You can't get a Student Pilot Certificate yet, you need to be 16, but you can log training hours and prepare for it. Then when you turn 17, you can go for your checkride.

    please i need your advice on if i should go to flight school before going back to college. i've been out of college for over 2 years now and now is the time that i would be going back. Not going to school (at least AA college degree} is not an opion for me and i also want to start my flight school in other to start building my flight time. what do you suggest that i do first especially considering i might be taking loans to finish both course.

    • @flywiththeguys
      @flywiththeguys  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate you asking, but I try not to give too much advice when money is involved. I would say, determine what your career goals are and make sure your education aligns with them. If you plan on joining the airlines, check with a recruiter and see what they recommend.

    I’m studying my commercial pilot license in Canada,are those useful tool also works for Transport Canada written exam?

    • @flywiththeguys
      @flywiththeguys  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Short answer no, these are specific to the private pilot certificate. But it sounds like your signed up for a commercial program. You’ll need tools like this in the beginning is yes maybe, but your school should provide the materials you need, or a list of them at least.
