  • It was 1984 when Francesco Moser, and a team of engineers, focussed on beating Eddy Merckx's Hour Record. This futuristic looking Moser, complete with a massively curved seat tube and chromed out finish, saw Moser break Merckx record in 1984, and looks ahead of it's time even today!

    Cranking a 108 inch gear for an hour at 100 rpm... on that beast of a bike, wow. Love the details and presentation. I remember 84 but funny how compared to today's bikes it looks like 100 years ago. Well done GCN.

    The bike is so far different to what Merckx rode, and Merckx bike is not like what those rode before him. Shame the hour record can’t be used to compare cyclists from different times.

      @embuscadochifreinexplicaca5960 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why would you?? Then- doping was allowed and accepted between cyclists, you could literally use any kind of bike and equipment you wanted, there wasnt altitude training, velodromes were mainly if not all open spaces, etc.

    • @JMcLeodKC711
      @JMcLeodKC711 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Interesting statement. I'm sure fans of Coppi raised a stink when Eddy set his record. "lighter bike and Eddy rode at altitude....if Fausto had that stuff, he could have cracked 50". Trying to compare athletes in any sport across eras is the number one cause of bar fights the world over.

    The frame is chrome plated, not polished. The tubes are fillet brazed, not welded. What effect did the 28" rear wheel have on the gear inches? Why is the seat tube curved? Please get a real expert.

    • @Tangoko
      @Tangoko 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Back then when there were no wind-tunnel or high-tech materials we have today, lots of "innovations" were born out of imagination, and of course, trail-n-error. The effect on gear ratio, however, I'd imagine it was figured in. 53x13 was common top gear on road bikes then - with a 28" wheel, it's like 55x13 on a 27" wheel. Wow, I loved Moser; his style and fighting spirit!

      You sound fun....

    • @secretagent86
      @secretagent86 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Tangoko math is easy typical road bike max gearing for me in the 1970s. 52 gear front, 14 rear, 27 inch wheel = 52 x 27 / 14 = 100.3
      So in this case:
      53 x 28/13 = 114.15 inches (not 108)
      a 53 x 27 / 13 would be 110
      if he had used 54 x 27/13 it would have been 112.2 inches. I could not push over 100 inches, so i am not going to say what was best
