Chris please remove battery before changing bit
Good advice mate! Even though there is a safety switch, you can never be too careful with power tools!
@@TheUltimateRecycleryes ! In fact a long time ago I (luckily- but it was conscious) built the habit that any battery power tool - I remove the battery before any adjustment to blade etc - so when I come across a new tool it feels my baseline habit… even if the machine in question doesn’t seem to need that treatment. (So I do it even with sanders before changing sand paper … not just jigsaws circular saws etc, as it’s too easy a habit to forget !)
I don’t like the look of the on off switch as it isn’t a “dead man’s handle” if you let go or have an accident. I have the LxT jigsaw which is the same - I think the button on off is just plane dangerous - as if you caught yourself - got your fingers -
It won’t stop when you recoil in pain …
Having said that I think I’m about to buy one of these for its utility and it matches the battery system I’m heavily invested in ! Thanks for the video.

Ive got 2 routers, one giant "handheld" from the 90's with two handles on the sides. And a second one about half that size mounted in a little table.
I don't have much occasion to use them.
But when I do I am usually pleased with the results.
I like the looks of that little one. I use a dremmel with router attachment for most of my small jobs.
So I didn't think I needed one like yours.
But your video sure has me thinking on purchasing one again.
I'm not sure how much use I will actually have for it Kayle, but I am very happy with the job it has done for the dim bulb thing I'm making!
Somewhere I read Chris, that most workshop accidents are with routers. Just take care.
I've never met someone missing fingers from a router.

A key to safe and smooth routing is to take incremental cuts. The typical recommendation is not more than 1/8 inch (3 mm) at a time. So make the first cut with the bit extended only a little and extend more and more over several passes. This is especially prudent for the big bit you were using. Also, best practice usually entails routing against the rotation of the bit. There are cases where one routes in the direction of rotation (called a climb cut), but that is not usual. Also, when putting the bit into the collet, do not let it bottom out. The curved portion of the shank should be just above the collet in order that a good clamping action can be achieved.

One instruction I’ve heard repeatedly is to pull the bit out just a tad, before tightening collet, to allow for bit expansion. Just thought I’d pass that on.

Without the size limiter on the trimmer base some rubberneck is gonna shove a large molding profile bit in there and just stop out that tiny motor. Luckily Makita has overload protection on most of their tools.

Yep, I agree - a small trimmer shouldn't be asked to use large bits! 👍
Chris you pull the router toward you so you can view the cutting of the bit. At least that's how I do it

The square footplate wasn't included by accident. You can take off the round footplate and put the square one on for a bit more stability and control.

Technically speaking they are a “laminate trimmer” not a router 😀 most carpenters use them for trenching hinges.
Yes I think I heard it referred to as a laminate trimmer, but not sure it said that on the box! They would be great for doing hinges 👍😊
We have one in our tech workshop at school. They’re very handy. I have the dewalt version. Equally good.

@@benhowellthomas Well, it is a snug fit - I just figured I didn't tighten it enough!
It is called a trim router, so only useful for detail/trim work. Lower power than a "full size" router, and probably not even powerful enough for those bits that are "too large" to fit through the base.

The vertical edge of the router bit should not be visible below the face of the router base, I think, Chris? The way it cut the rounded edge seemed wrong...
I'm not sure on that. The vertical edge had a cutting edge, so I figured it was part of the molding shape? 🤔

Why do you keep saying something should or should not be included when you said yourself you've never used a router :/ The accessories you think are useless are extremely useful.

Just like a table saw once it's on it needs a separate button press to shut it off. I'll take nasty gash from a router over a table saw injury any day.
