    Particularly nice burst, they just keep getting better and better. I wanted to say thanks; thanks to you and Ben Crowe I started building guitars during the shutdown. An LP with a lizard burst, a la Big D, started the ball rolling; followed by an ES-125; then a strat that for some reason just really makes me happy. Now I'm working on three more LPs. Kinda got hooked. So, thanks, I needed something to do in my old age. Er, I mean, second childhood. Thanks for the inspiration.

    Would have never thought to to yellow first and as the “finish”
    This explains why my first foray into burst didn’t go so well

    It looks great I love how you almost said" I probably shouldn't have done that" but don't worry man no matter how long we've been doing this stuff everybody accidentally does something they didn't want but it's easily fixable good luck on the guitar build off.

    I have a raw PRS quilted maple top body and been trying to determine weather to go with red dye or yellow. This is the best of both worlds and this will be what I do with my build. I use Keda dyes and have had great luck with them. Thanks for this Vid.

    Beautiful! Although I’ve done a LOT more leather carving than guitar builds, I like leather dyes for both quite a lot. I’ve used Angelus’ dyes and acrylics, and Fiebing’s as well as the stuff Tandy Leather sells. Fiebing’s USMC Black is the blackest of the black! Not even light can escape it’s pull!😂 They (Fiebing’s) also have a slightly darker red called Oxblood that is my favorite red to work with. You might like it, too. Good luck in the build-off!

    I think the amount of red on the margins is the key to success with this type of process. It turned out _okay_ but overall, I wonder if applying the red only about 3/8" to 1/2" in from the perimeter would help you acheive a bit longer of a fade in, hopefully with fewer hard lines.
    I also wonder if this dye can be applied with a spray gun...

    Hi there. If you wanted to make the grain really pop, how would you go about it on this kind of burst? Putting black over the yellow then sanding back would maybe be a bit harsh / extreme? Could you use another darker colour? Brown maybe? Just trying to think of something that would go with the overall yellow / red burst vibe.

    Derek, I was checking out the Angelus site, they offer a 12 pack, you pick assortment. what would be your 12 choices for all around guitar work, I lean toward Burst finishes and want to experiment. After watching the video earlier, I would say the wood trend to the darker side, I have right now! I am looking for some new wood now, I have a few things going!! For the GGBO this year!

  • @frankchindamo6104

    I just watched your episode red and yellow sunburst . Do you cut the dyes with water or is it straight up thank you

  • @chrossphyre
    @chrossphyre 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I noticed the cutout for the controls acts as a natural barrier to blending the burst in from the bottom of the guitar up towards the centre. I wonder if making a temporary insert to cover the control slot would make it easier to bring the burst across better?

    • @chrossphyre
      @chrossphyre 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had another thought: What if you repeated the burst on the sides as well? Do you think you would have enough space there to carry it off?

    • @peachmelba1000
      @peachmelba1000 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was wondering the same thing as well. I think Derek rushed this a bit, and as such he didn't really think out the pattern, and sadly I think the burst on this one is a minor fail. It's blotchy and doesn't have any refined shape. The colors are great though, and the back turned out perfect. Reminds me of the back of an old Rick.
