Minneapolis Crankshaft Follow-Up and Taper Turning on a Trailer Spindle

- While I am unable to be there to repour the bearings on the Minneapolis, we did find it to be a 1/8 inch out of square. This was causing the angular travel of the connecting rod and the binding we saw.
If you have any information of what actually happened to this engine while at Rollag, please let me know.

New lights look great. Lighting is always a worthy shop upgrade.
Definitely!
More light is always good, especially for us older folks. 😊
Holy balls - I’m hust blown away by the mirror finish you get on these parts.
The new lighting looks much better, but then you knew that already. In fact, a blind man would notice😂
Lighting is definetly better. ( Brighter ) And it does show the peiece your working on better. 😀
….”too not enough”….
Now THAT’s a measurement I can work with.
😂👍
Someone sure made a mess with that Minneapolis crankshaft. It sure does sound like a cover-up for someone's original mistake, whatever that was, to cause the original damage. Hopefully you get it all sorted out correctly this time.
The new Lighting is great improvement!
The new lighting looks awesome, good job
The new lighting is much better! I have started using a lot more light the older I get. My father used to say old eyes need more light. I now understand what he meant lol.
New lights look great, much better.
New lights are great . . very good color from the lights. . NICE! ! !
Lighting is killer Josh !
Congrats on the new lightning!
The new lights look good, another thing that may help with the lighting is to try a LED light strip over the top of the lathe at the centerline of it.
Josh, The new lights are great! Nice work on the axle stub !
New lighting looks great Josh!
The new light are great. It’s funny, the older we get the more light we need 😎👍👍🇬🇧
Lighting to me is important and your new lighting is an improvement.
The best thing I ever did in my shop is changing from fluorescent lighting to LED.
I put in the same number of LED's as I had fluorescent and now its so bright that I have to turn off half the lights.
Only using the brightest over the machine I am working on at the time.
I enjoy watching your videos .
I never noticed the lighting being bad, but more lighting was an improvement.
I remember over 50 years ago in the secondary school metal shop making a four way pulley. Initial setup was with the cast aluminium blank in a four jaw chuck to face the large end and bore the hole through it. Then we had to make a tapered shaft to put the pulley blank on to machine for the belt. Turning the shaft involved offsetting the tailstock slightly to produce a very slight taper in order to have the pulley blank near the center of the shaft. The instructor came around from time to time and I had almost finished a pass. When I checked the pulley, it was too close to the tailstock, so I took another one thou cut as the instructor came back and was worried that I was taking too much off, but it ended up that the pulley was pretty close to center. That was an old Hercus metal lathe, which had none of the sophistication of newer (and older) lathes.
The new lighting is a great improvement! It makes it a LOT easier to see what you are doing and vastly improves our viewing!
Great lighting!! I'm looking to upgrade mine as well. Happy machining!
The lights are definitely nice. 💥
New lights look great.
New lighting for sure! Ric
the new lites are a major improvement !
Shop looks definitely brighter Josh
Lighting looks great. Cheers
The lightening certainly looks brighter. As long as you can see alright to make a living the main issue..
Hi Josh:
You can never have enough light when working with machines, as you do. I hope that they are LED type. You can add much light and the cost will be lower only the initial cost of the fixtures. I think you will actually see your electric bill go down. That is a very good thing.
Making tapers is not easy. Your experience shows. You make it look easy.
One more comment: They kept breaking these, I gather, because the material was too soft. You changing to a stronger material is a very good idea. You sort of work yourself out of a job by picking the correct material for the job. I have to agree 100% with your way of doing business. I bet you will be getting more work from these videos. O know that if - " I were looking for the job to be done right, at a fair price, the first time", I would send it to you.
I have to believe business is picking us. Keep up the excelent work.
Regards: JP
These new LEDs are replacing older one. Much more wattage and lumens. No way my power bill is going down with these. But worth the expense to see better. I tend to help my customers upgrade and save money. Yeah it costs me some money long term, but I have happy repeat customers. Work isn't picking up, but it's not bad enough to need a second job, yet. It is slowing down though.
Lights look great
Lighting is a big improvement!
The lights are great, Josh. I'm sure it will make a difference at all your work stations. You know, I had old guys telling me about pouring bearings and I have seen the end product, but I've never seen it done. Looking forward to seeing how they come out. Thanks and have a great week.
Unfortunately an impatient club member already took it upon himself to do it.
😢
For videos showing Babbitt work, I suggest searching for either Keith Rucker or Keith Fenner and Babbitt.
The lights are awesome, hope it helps you work with more ease.
New lighting looks really great. It helps to brighten everything up so it’s easier to see.
Lighting's great Josh, a touch 'cold' for our viewing but as working light perfect :-).
I wondered if I should have a few warm lights also.
Lights are fantastic
You mentioned going blind with the new lighting ..... It will in fact be the opposite with having better lighting being better for your eyes with no eye strain. The new lighting is definitely much better, we can see the difference. It's always good having good light with whatever you are doing. I set my small 100 square feet shop up with seven lights, so that I have a light on each bench or machine and one brighter in the middle of the room. My wood shop is a little smaller and has six lights. I'm using LED bulb lights, not strip lights.
That 1144 sure machines nice......new lighting is fantastic....I'll assume its all LED.
Love the lighting!
As for lighting, next thing you will be wearing sunglasses. But for us viewers, excellent.
I was thinking that same thing.
New lighting much better.
On the lighting, Looks good, works fine, should last a long time. Your videos are going to be a lot better with the better lighting. You get 2 "atta boys". KOKO!
Jup, light´s good. Monkey like shiney. I have cluttered up my workspace with lights, too. One 112w neon light above, three lights on the workbench and an led light that I can move around. And a few light bulbs here and there... When I started lighting was awful. Now I´m okay, too.
New lights are always a good upgrade.looks brighter in the shop
The lighting is great Josh.
Nice job on the axle.👍👍
Hey you got machines in there
gotta love Badger Northland manure spreader, I did a show for them here in Orlando Florida in 1976-77
at the time, I had no idea what a manure spreader even was.....they had all the equipment down here
and had a big field at the Hyatt they did demos on....
Josh, Thanks for the update on the 25 hp crank....ironically, I just watched a Fenner rabbit bearing pour video 2 days ago...
looking forward to how you repair, cheers from Florida, Paul
Unfortunately an impatient club member already poured the bearings. I hope it is right.
@@TopperMachineLLC...Could the "impatient club member" possibly have been involved with the first problem....hoping to correct a mistake?
@@arkansas1336 fortunately no. This was done at another club in Rolag, MN
Love the new light's
You have a great shop. I’m jealous.
Thanks 👍
lighting looks great!!
lighting looks great. 👍
Lights definitely better 👍👍👍👍
Of course, much better with the new lightning!
New Lights Look Great!
Lighting all good. One can't have enough in your shop, especially over the machines to aid with setting up jobs. Cheers Ian
Thanks for the before, and after the comparison is a lot brighter, crispy,no shadows. Now we have the LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION 😊. From your mouth to gods ears, we would love to know what happen with that machine.ghost in the machine 😅
There is almost NEVER enough light as far as I know.... Love the new lights Josh!
New lights looks great can actually see your five oclock shadow. LOL
300 sub away from 100k! Congrats!
New lighting is GREAT !
It’s nice to see Your methods to find out wether a part is in spec or not.
I think it would be interesting to see if the crank pin still measure right if controlled when crank shaft is rotated 3x 90 degrees.
Just so You don’t by chance measured in the one position where all seemed right!
Always interesting contents in Your videos!
Thanks PeO
I don't think rotating will change what I found. It was true and inline with the crankshaft. Turning it should not change that.
Lighting is fine, make sure it is three-phase for safety.
new lights are fantastic mate!
New lights good.
Added lights are excellent. Might consider adding a work light to the carriage or near the headstock for added lighting.
Possible reasons why the trailer spindle is failing, if there is a sharp transition at the shoulder where the bearing sits, that sharp transition becomes a stress riser that grows into a crack then propagates until the part fails. This is a cyclic failure or repeated loading/unloading over many, many, many cycles before the part fails. Cure for this is to put a large a radius as the bearing (bearing IDs have a radius to accommodate the shoulder radius) will tolerate at that shoulder transition and make sure the radius transitions are smooth.
1144 "stress proof" steel is a good material choice for this spindle.
Hi Josh, the new lights look great!
Must also be a big difference to work in, a workshop this well lit!! Look at your own videos from the beginning of your youtube story! ;-)
Thanks for the video!
The Early stuff was with crappy cameras. But this lighting will help a lot.
@@TopperMachineLLC You're doing great work and your TH-cam videos have evolved to a real professional level. Congratulations, it must be a steep hill to climb. Wishing you all the good.
A cheat for axle issues like that is to use a bigger radius at the shoulder. Then you can use a washer with a bigger id to clear the shoulder but the proper width so the bearing doesn't hang up on the radius. I fixed a big grain cart that way years ago that use to break spindles every year it probably has been 20 years since no issues.
The intensity of the new lights is great! Makes the work look much clearer, but it bleaches your "Suntan"! 😁🤭
Thank you Josh!
I removed the ballasts from my fluorescent lights and converted them into LED lights.Lights are a lot like insulation. You can never have too much of either.
Ho Josh, I have watched you for ages and never had an issue with your lighting, though I must admit that the new lighting is definitely an improvement.
Glad it helps.
The lighting looks good.
The lights are awesome
one of the few must watch in HD for max enjoyment, thanks for the regular fun times Josh
New lighting. Looks good.
👍😎👍
.
New lights look good ..
The new lighting looks much better. As you get older you will appreciate that extra light😂
Definitely not dark like a dungeon. Looks great.
Thanks for keeping us in the loop Josh, and a little machining too! thanks and keep well buddy
Love the lighting. Almost looked like you were outside on a sunny day.
The lighting is a great improvement. For as inexpensive as LED lighting is, it just makes sense.
Lightning looks great Josh, it really brightens the scenes up a lot more allowing us to see everything much more clearly. 👍👍
the lighting in shop looks great.....now to put some dulling spray on that Pea Green monster behind you.....
Lol.
Josh, i just installed some LED panels in a simular shop. I would recommend LED panels, because you get more light, you don't brighten up the ceiling, the hole light comes down to where you need it. The light distribution is far better and and you get less shading.
You get different sizes, i used 120x30cm (about 3ft by 1ft) with 40W. Colour should be 4000K and for filming i recommend a good CRI of more than 80, 90+ is ideal.
Greets from Liechtenstein
I already bought these and am happy. Didn't think about panels. I'm adding them to the high bay around the walls and it's made a huge difference. Couldn't be happier.
@@TopperMachineLLC well it's far better than it was before👍
I also work with highbay LED, great efficiency and lots of lumen. Next project is with 0-10V dimmable highbay. After that i have a retrofit for a large garage with LED tubes, i always eliminate the old tube driver and go for direct mains.
The lighting looks way better . Same lights i have in my shop. Theyve been in there 6 years without a single issue
Almost 100k subs. Congrats in advance.😊
Thank you so much 😀
@@TopperMachineLLC You deserve it. 100k doing only honest work filmed is exceptional.
The new lighting looks good. Cameras are known for not capturing the lighting the same way we see it with our own eyes. The whiter color of the lights can help make things easier to see as you work on them.
The new lights look great! you may need some sunglasses when you do the rest of the shop...
The lights looks great. Turning the trailer spindle was interesting and I hope you get to the bottom of what happened with the steam engine
Looking great and a big thumbs up 👍.
Hey Josh! New led lighting what a step forward much brighter nothing worse than a dingy shop/garage etc 💯🫵🏻👍🏻🇬🇧
You should have seen it before when I still had fluorescent and metal halide lights. This is the third lighting upgrades in 12 years.
Hey Josh, not a machinist but really like your videos. New lighting looks great, big improvement.
NEW LIGHTS all the way!!!!!
New lighting is always a plus ➕
Love the new brighter lighting. Someone did the repair wrong and was highly embarrassed. Thus the coverup. There’s a part two to this story however. Now we get to see it done right in Josh’s shop, “the second time”
Unfortunately an impatient club member already took it upon himself to do it.
In terms of pouring new white metal (babbit) bearings. I don't want to teach you to suck eggs, but these were the options we had when pouring the same things for our steam engine crank. The choice is about whether to use the actual shaft as the former, and then scrape back to size and clearance, or use a dummy oversize shaft with the clearance already on it. First option probably allows you to align the actual shaft and conrods etc more easily, but is a bit laborious and flaky as far as accuracy of size is concerned. 2nd option is the right one, and how they usually did it during build, but you then need to jig it all up to get alignment right. You could pour and then line bore, but you're back to the alignment issues and it was partially the avoidance of line boring why some engines went to white metal instead of bronze in the first place. And of course, put a bit of smoky soot off an acetylene torch on the shaft so the white metal doesn't stick.
Unfortunately, an impatient club member took it upon himself to pour the bearings. I am hoping it is correct, but at the same time skeptical. We will see what happens.
Lighting brighter, and makes things clearer. I hope someone will let you know what happened, sadly, the truth is that you may never find out. I trust though that with your skills, it will be as good as new or better when you are done.
I'm sure nobody will come forward. There is a lot of secrecy around what happened and why the owner was asked to leave Rolag
Add the plot thickens😊 will you be involved in finding and taking care of the problem? That would be some cool footage.
@@anthonyrivers8395 unfortunately an impatient club member already took it upon himself to do it.
I like the new lights a lot better.
