To honour Stig Anderson's 50th birthday in 1981, ABBA recorded this tribute song for him called "Hovas Vittne".

Hova's Witness
(a name-play with "Jehovah's Witness" - the religious sect. Hova is the small town in Sweden where Stig was born, situated in the western province of Västergötland).
From Hova came

The driveway must be salted (the way to Stig's house "Villa Ek backen" was quite high and to make it possible to walk on it during winter, it needed to be salted)

@@skippybartalozziStig wanted it released. The core four did not want it released as it was a gift for Stig, just as the song they wrote and recorded for Gorel Johnson in 1980. That little blue record was given to Gorel, she got #1 of 50 produced. The other 49 given to those at Gorel's 30th birthday party.
Well, part of the melody was used in the Merano song from chess.

When ABBA handed this gift over to Stickan, it was followed by a decree that the song was never to be released, never to be re-recorded, never to not anything. Stickan on his side wanted them to do an English version. He knew a catchy song when he heard it. ABBA said no. They were in "the visitors" mode, heading for gloomy and darker territory. Everything that ABBA never was. Their last single before the break up in 1982, "the day before you came", is however a masterpiece. In all its sadness.
ABBA is ABBA and there won't be a product in the show biz more original and authentic than them!
This song is really well done. A song of this quality could have easily made it onto one of ABBA's released albums. Very catchy!

@@fredrikmoller629 Jag jag har hört lite mer på efterforskningar nu. Bl a hörde jag på prg 'Bytt är bytt" från Tvn, att detta va en skiva som alla gäster fick bara, på just detta Kalas. Ska tydl bara finnas 200 st Ep Singlar av den låten, enl dem på prg BäB. För denna skiva var med som ett av föremålen som skulle värderas näml. Fast i detta Nu minns jag ej vad den värderades till.. kanske va det 10000-/st 😉🤗

'Hovas Vittne' should be released on an ABBA compilation album its a really catchy song, I know they recorded it for their manager Stig but its a real pity that ABBA never recorded an English version of 'Hovas Vittne' the song was recorded in January 1981 two months before the sessions for 'The Visitors' album began.
Part of the melody of 'Hovas Vittne' was used in the song 'Merano' from Chess on the line 'Where breathing in will turn you on, where water tastes like wine'.

Interesting....sure. Vocal qualities and harmonies of the ladies: for sure. But to say I like the song: no, sorry. It sounds too much like the German contemporairy schlagers which, I am sorry, I am not a fan of.

Benny at the RockNRoll Hall in 2010, schooled the Americans a bit regarding schlager, northern folk, classical, etc...
He was talking about their influences. He mentioned schlager, Swedish folk, classical, northern Euro folk, Italian and French aria's, etc...
Then several Americans -- always the "know-it-all" American males - chuckled.
Benny, then in the typical calm, reserved Swedish way, schooled them. He explained you put all those styles together and you get ABBA.
He also mentioned the geography and living north of the 59° north parallel called the "melancholy belt", also known as the "vodka belt" that runs from Russia-Finland-Sweden/Scandinavia and it's influences it has on their music. He mentioned you her it in the vocals of Frida and Agnetha.
What Benny Andersson just did, was put down the American "know-it-all" attitude by gently educating them in the most calm and polite way.
In the mid 60's the British bands schooled the Americans. In the 70's it was ABBA doing the schooling.
Today, tons of American 's biggest artist look to Sweden for writers, producers, etc... The Swedes know schlager. The Swedes know folk. The Swedes know classical. The Swedes know music.
@@danbike9 and I am the last to deny that Sweden plays a very important role in today's music. Alas, the fact remains that I am mot a fan of schlager music. Amd why not... the Germans produced enough other interesting music since the 1970's. For example, Eloy and Schicke/Führs/Fröhling.
