It is so difficult for me as a long time fan of Trent's music to see him 3 months before one of his worst overdoses. He was really masterful in hiding his addiction and self destruction to the public, but if you pay attention, you can tell that he was suffering. I can genuinely say that I'm extremely happy that he turned his life around and lives peacefully now. He is an inspiration to me as a musician.
IMHO, The Fragile is so much deeper than The Downward Spiral. It took me MONTHS to fully digest all the layers of that album - So full of subtle nuances. And when you finally 'appreciate' something, its very rewarding. For me, that album represents the height of his career. That 'vulnerability' he speaks of is palpable.
Steve Paul - one of my favorite aspects of this album is that he uses th same composition on multiple songs and he uses different instruments on each composition. He mentioned he wrote th record like that so that each song can flow in and out of each song. And he wanted to revisit certain beautiful melodies into different environments and I think it turned out beautifully.
LOL no. There's a reason artists like Johnny Cash, David Bowie, Adrian Belew, Coil and many others connected to The Downward Spiral. There's a reason it sold double of any of his other releases. A reason it earned him soundtrack work with Oliver Stone and David Lynch. TDS is a timeless masterpiece. An influential album. The Fragile on the other hand is little more than watered down pop music....nothing special. Most people identify with that because most of the population live boring lives and seek comfort above all else. They want comforting, watered down music. They can't handle intensity or anything that's strange, or dark and distorted.....a true reflection of existence. The Fragile reflects where Trent was at 5 years after the success of TDS. Has everything he can ever want, no longer hungry. Happens to the best of them. Nine Inch Nails best releases are the TDS....and then Fixed at 2nd.
@@Abruzzo333 dude, you’re being “that guy” with this comment. I don’t want to start a typical TH-cam ugly argument that turns into nothing but insults etc, I just wanna stand up for my personal favorite album of all time. It struck a chord, it’s personal, saved my life, probably more than once. I definitely agree that TDS is THE SHIT, it’s right there by it’s side, and for the record, everything I’ve ever read about that time in his life was nothing like you’re saying. He almost died of an overdose, had to pour all of his own money into the tour because interscope wasn’t properly supporting it. I could go on, but I won’t for everyone’s sake. Just put some respect on it man, it’s a great album that still sounds brilliant today.
Im 37, been a fan of trent for a long time, come a long way in my own life. Never saw this interview, but have to say coming out of isolation and having social anxiety, this took huge fucking balls to do this interview. He handled it extremely well
;;~;; he did and everyone's vibe was rancid, he prob felt that so hard. i can tell how exhausted he becomes every few questions, unless hes saying something meaningful and believed people were understanding that
I just started listening to NIN about 4 weeks ago, got all their albums, saw them twice in Sydney. I feel like i've a made a new best friend in Trent. He seems so genuine in his thoughts. Amazing artist.
I saw that first sydney show a couple weeks ago. Flew all the way from the US. Amazing show! Loved listening to aussies sing along with their accent haha
It's amazing when you discover NIN and just dig through their catalogue, it's insanely consistent. I think he's the most consistent and one of the most creative artists in music today by far.
I asked my parents to tape this when it played on TV back in 2000 - I was just 13. Now I'm 33, just one year younger than he is here. Only now do I see, understand and empathize with his clear unease in this interview.
I love how absolutely open he is. What an absolutely beautiful human being ❤️ I have always loved him and his work since I was just 12 when I discovered him. I'm 37 and I am still amazed with everything he has done.
That's a horrible way of interviewing someone, being surrounded by lots of people, especially if they have social anxiety like Trent. Who organized this interview? I feel awful for Trent, he looks terribly uncomfortable.
This is the first time I seen this video but this is another reason I respect him so much because I can relate to this. I would be very uncomfortable with this type of interview like he seems to be
I can see a puffiness to his face, and recognize hes probably new doing H. He loves it and he's trying to feel and act "normal". That haircut...lol, still sexy tho.
I'm surprised at how well he handles interviews, despite his social anxiety. I have social anxiety and a similar personality and am certain I'd completely embarrass myself
If I'm not careful, my whole favourites folder is going to be overtaken by NIN. I keep clicking and thinking, oh, just one more, but every single fucking one is so interesting and inspiring.
I, as a nurse, do not believe he is suffering from withdraw in this interview. His pupils are not dilated nor constricted indicating no narcotics or stimulants. Notice that he is inconstant motion while he sits in the chair, for example crossing his arms. This indicates he is very uncomfortable. I would say he has agoraphobia or a fear of open spaces. I love Trent no mater what he has.... we all have something wrong whether physical or mental.
I think it's quite a bit simpler. He wasn't happy with what he put out and now, because of his record contract, must sit in front of crowds like this and attempt to sell something that he's ultimately not proud of. So instead of faking it he straight up apologizes.
Trent has NOT EVER done drugs. He is US Air Force, and they don't let you fly if you have EVER taken drugs. The reason he is uncomfortable is that he is doing the interview without any other band members, they have made him sit in the center of a circle of approx. 25 people, like "piggy in the middle". And someone asked him about a professional disagreement he had with a band member, and THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE KNOWN ABOUT IT.
Oh Man ...se me llenaron los ojos de lágrimas ...el tuvo q cortar su trabajo por su recuperación ...gran obra de arte THE FRAGILE ...se veía cansado , consumido y con poca voz ...el es mí dios...y lo será siempre ...
I remember watching this on air.. a few days after the concert,.. My buddy's g/f / my mutual friend commented on how calm Trent looked during this interview at the time.. As opposed to the chaos that ensued during the show a few days before..
Only today, more than 12 years later,am I able to recognise some sort of dark significance of this event.I had been living in Japan for more than two years (with a woman, from Yokohama, whom I'd met in England) and was,by this time, feeling a mounting despair, after a long period of looking for a stable vocation.) Not being the ardent NIN fan as "N" was, and being seated far from the stage,I wasn't able to clearly see T.R's downward spiral. My descent began about nineteen months later.
He stated in interviews in 2005 that he had isolated himself a lot during this era, and he was still not clean. Probably explains him looking a bit uncomfortable.
David Bowe wrires alot of his lyrics and Trent does his thing with the music. The duo is something that can never be copied. People have tried and failed (manson).
pretty sure this was right at the beginning of his sobriety. if he seems awkward and uncomfortable it's probably because he wasn't used to doing this kind of thing sober, not because he was high......
... dude literally all the drugs they had in the 90s they had in the 80s, and the 70s... and the 60s... and 50s... you get the point. It just gets stronger. and guess what, drugs are stronger now than they were in the 90s. and guess what, all teenagers are baked all the time still. It's not a 90s thing its a teenage thing...
Uh Qualuudes were in abundance in the 60’s-80’s and are all but extinct now. Acid in the 60 and 70’s was better and more pure than anything after it and some even claim that it’s absolutely nothing like it now and that the acid now a days isn’t even acid, so is also an extinct drug. Cocaine was as pure as it would ever be in the 80’s and now you can’t find coke that hasn’t been cut with everything under the sun, even cut with fentanyl which a speck will kill you. What a dumb comment.
It's so funny that he never likes a majority of music videos he's made (Into the Void, The Perfect Drug, Deep) or has had major back and forths with directors on visions (Every Day Is Exactly the Same, original Hurt & March of the Pigs videos)
Honestly my own generation probably had it worse because we were all teens, then. But actually there was a lot of other music going on at the time besides just that stuff and I pretty much stuck my head in the sand and ignored grunge and that entire movement, and it wasn't hard to do, either.

It's crazy how he used to be so awkward in interviews in the past, and now he seems so calm, very thoughtful, and wise in his contemporary interviews.
Good point. I don't think everyone who's deep in that stuff acts like that though.
***** He was not completely clean at that time according to him and his interview in 2005.
His "interviews" all state ALCOHOL. He does NOT look drunk.
Nowadays it seems he can't stop talking!
Bowie was exactly the same when he first started. Very awkward but later very comfortable in interiews.
