    Thoughts on the anime change?

    • @IgnitedQuils
      @IgnitedQuils 5 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      Chibi Reviews The anime follows the LN, Chibi, not the manga.
      While I find the episode to be emotional and good, the changes really bothered me. It’s not the first time the anime dumbed down things. Raphtalia didn’t feel bad when Idol fell down at all in the LN/manga. And Idol didn’t even try to beg for his life in there as well.

      Disliked it. I thought it was very out of character from Naofumi to try to stop her and having read the light novel i'm disappointed she didn't push him out of the window. I was extra annoyed when she seemed guilty for killing him. In the LN both she and Naofumi wanted to kill him. It scares me a little that they seem to shy away from some controversial stuff in the anime. I did like the change of sequence for finding Rifana. in the LN Raphtalia already knew she was dead because it happened while she was there so she wasn't phased by it when she found the skeleton and identified her right away. By the fact she's basically a skeleton in the anime too it's a little odd though since it still seems to have happened a long time ago.

      The evil nobleman was also way stronger in the LN and Naofumi, Filo and Melty all helped to take him down. In the anime he seems more of a groveling coward to instill some kind of pity.

    In the manga she spares him for like a thousand of a second, wanting to instead hand him to the mob and let them decide. That is after stabbing him as you pointed out.
    Instead of him falling off the window, he picks himself back up with two whips and she stabs him with a lunge, pushing him out.
    Also in the manga there was a bit of a mini arc of Melty questioning Raph how she can be so mature, to which she replies after pushing the lord of the window "I told you I'm not so mature" she is also not really phased by killing him; her only regret is not coming earlier. Her hatred for this here dude is even beyond what they showed as the lord actually tortured Rifana in front of her in order to erase her smile.
    The scene Raph had with Rifana's remains was superb though, much more emotional than the manga with the voice acting.
    The ep was quite watered down to make it anime approved, but in general it was ok.

    While I agree the manga did the confrontation scene better, I don't want to say the anime completely screwed it up. Personally, I took Naofumi's speaking up and asking Raph if she would have closure as him making sure she was doing what she needed and not just giving into her rage. While he does rely on the Rage Shield, Naofumi knows that giving into hate and anger comes at a cost and didn't want Raph to bare the same burden he does. Maybe I'm just reading too much into the scene, but those are my thoughts.
    All that said, the dungeon scene was a freaking masterpiece. The buildup and getting into Raph's head was done expertly. Naofumi reassuring her at the end really showed how much the two mean to each other and perfectly encapsulated their relationship.

    • @SilverIceDragon
      @SilverIceDragon 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I personally like this change, but I also agree that the anime should stick a bit closer to the source material.

    • @shouta1255
      @shouta1255 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      You're definitely not reading into it too much. That's part of the intent of the change, IMO. The way the narrative played out originally makes Raphtalia mirror Naofumi a bit too much. This changes that really adds another layer to their relationship.

    • @bragnir
      @bragnir 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It definitely felt that way. Naofumi didn't say "don't do it", merely asked for her to make sure if it'd bring closure. If anyone knows what unrestrained wrath can do are these two.
      Honestly, while I found the change odd at first, the more I think about it, the more I feel Raphtalia saying the cliche "I don't want to be like you" was not so much "Killing you would make me like you" as "A demi-human killing a human noble would have consequences- and I'd end up hurting demis as much as you did."
      You have to remember who is present there: both Naofumi, whose unrestrained rage had actively hurt the one person he didn't want to at the time (he thought Filo was dead)... And Melty. The freaking heiress to the crown, who will remember all that happens here when she reports to mommy, as well as when the crown eventually's on her head. The same girl this noble had just personally tried to torture then use as hostage mere moments ago. "You will attone for what you've done" gets an entire new meaning when you literally have someone on your side who has the means and every inclination to MAKE him attone... If he doesn't die by T-Rex first.

    The politics in the series are really deep and believable, even more so in the LN. In the LN, when Motoyasu has his duel with Naofumi the King declares he'll make slavery illegal to support the Spear Hero, but the slave merchant later says if the King tried to do that he'd lose the support of the Noble Class and might even be forced out of his position and ruling power given to a royal in the branch family forcing Naofumi to realize the king can't just do whatever he wants without repercussions.
    Its also eventually explained that about 20 years previously the Demi-Humans of Siltvelt started a war of world conquest and attacked Melromarc. The current King joined the war as a low-level soldier and helped defeat Siltvelt and many of the surviving warriors and knights were given noble titles to honor their strength and contribution, but these were also the people who watched Demi-Humans slaughtering innocents and close friends and allies. The slave traders states much of his business is simply renting out Demi-humans to people like Idol so he can torture them as a twisted form of revenge against his enemies. The same is said to be done to humans in Siltvelt. It's not justification for what he does, but it does add a bit of realism and understanding.

    I don't remember everything but I remember that in the light novel the noble put up more of a fight and eventually got knocked out of the window. Considering the cliffhanger we just got it was important that the man get get knocked outside so he can unleash the monster. If I had to guess what was going on they either wanted to save their budget so the fight was cut and they had to find another way to get the guy out of the window hence the "I will spare you and you will atone moment." Or it could be they prioritized showing her backstory and only had so much time in the episode so the fight was cut short.

    Raphtalia actually stab & kinda pushed the bastard out of window in the manga. Take notes that this is after the slave owner hideously attacked her after Rapthalia given mercy. She regret nothing & finally getting closure.
    Also, the moment when she said to Melty that "she's not a great person" actually a lot more mature in the manga. No crying, just a full realization & kinda left her naivety, in which I think the moment that she truly mature mentally I guess . . .

    From feeling utterly disgusted by the basement where the demihumans were held captive to feeling sad for Raphtalia, both in her backstory and losing her close friend Rifana, this episode was truly an emotional one. I understand that some view Raphtalia as a waifu because of her looks, but I see Raphtalia as a waifu because of her character. Raphtalia's actions in episode 4 were endearing to me because she showed that along with having a strong will and a ton of courage, she was also kind, caring, and a genuine woman. Fast forward to this episode, and I truly empathize with Raphtalia when she is in tears seeing the bones of her lost friend. When Raphtalia was blaming herself for Rifana's passing, it reminded me of the times I blamed myself when things didn't go right in my life. That moment certainly stuck a chord with me and I'm glad that Naofumi was the one to help Raphtalia get back on her feet, much in the same way that my mother has helped me through my lowest points. I couldn't have done it any better myself. While I do well know that Raphtalia will never exist outside of the show and the show's merchandise, Raphtalia's character is exactly the type of character I want my future wife to have and thus is why I consider Raphtalia as a waifu.

    It is quite an insight into Raphtalia's priorities how she refuses to kill the Lord, yet during the second wave (the first one with Naofumi in it) she was willing to fight and presumably kill an entire squad of knights that threatened Naofumi. As much as she's loved her time with Naofumi, it makes sense to see how much guilt she's been carrying this time.
    Which, sadly, kind of undermines in part her selflessness. She says she'll follow Naofumi through fire and brimstone, essentially through hell itself (I don't know Japanese so I don't know if that exact phrasing was used or if it was just creative license in translation) but that's less of a commitment if you don't care what happens to you. Hell, in all the fights we've seen the two of them in have we ever seen Raphtalia fear for her safety even once? Maybe with the two headed dog in the mines but was that because of danger to her or just the horrible memories?
    In this context the refusal to kill makes sense. She might be more willing to throw away her opportunity for revenge if she thinks little of herself, and even more so if she was holding on hope for rescuing Rafana, after all, if she asked for revenge, do you think Raphtalia would deny her?

Glad Raph fought back against idol even thought it was with that non lethal spirit sword that knock him back into window crashing. Also Ralph’s experience is a major eye opener for Naofumi and Melty. But the scene was completely different. She didn't walk up while getting whipped, she straight up stabbed him. She didn't take some moral high ground, she called him scum. He didn't accidentally fall out of the building, she threw his fat ass out. Then she turned to melty, and told her that she isn't as great as she thinks. It showed raftalia is a flawed character, and acts of kindness later, will have more of an impact. She didn't have that breakdown by her friends corpse, but only said 2 sentences, then moved on. It was a touching scene, but it kind of annoyed me that they just decided to completely redo most of this episode.

It must have been what, a matter of months since Raphtalia was sold to the slave merchant to the current point in the story, particularly if the waves are only a month(ish) apart from each other. It normally takes years for a body to decompose to a skeleton, especially when you factor in it was left in doors rather than exposed to the wilderness and wild animals. Which does open to the door onto speculation as to why the body was in the state it was.

    Did anyone else know how so few survivors were in the Count's dungeon? What happened to all the villagers and their children who were capture? Did they all die in the space of a few months or did they get sold off as slaves across the kingdom? I need some clarification on this thanks.
    Oh and just how exactly does Rhaptalia plan on rebuilding her village with only an handful of survivors from the Count's dungeon? It's not like she will be around to help much. Especially with being fugitives, the Waves and all...

      Well, without spoiling much...I read a bit of the light novel and let's just say they'll find even more survivors and Raphtalia's village does actually get rebuilt.

      @@wchan39 Wow... Thanks for clarifying that for me. I still don't see it being totally functional though. I mean they did lose a lot of people across the kingdom.
      I suppose I will just have to _"*Wait and Hope"*_

      @@TheStuffEnjoyer Oh, right! Forgot to tell you that other people besides the survivors will be moving into the village (especially after hearing how the Shield Hero's involved) once it's rebuilt.

    It's a dumb cliche when the hero kills people in his way to the boss, only to spare the boss because 'Revenge is not right," XD

    anime up to episode 15. It showed after the wave, the soldiers raided the village and enslaved the demi-humans.
    watching the first 5 episodes. i thought when raphtalia fell into the ocean after seeing her parents both killed by the wave monster. I was under the impressing that raphtalia washed up on sore and had been found by the slave merchant.
    Raphtalia was then sold and tortured and then returned back to the slave merchant but that is not the case...
    she returns back to village and then captured by knight soldiers as we all watched episode 15.

    In the LN she beats him in a fight where the guy uses 2 whips and is actually quite strong, at the end she stabs him with both swords and then while he's staggered due to that she pushes him out the window. He still survives the fall to summon the T-Rex but everyone assumed he died just like in the anime.

    Shield hero has a light novel, web novel, and manga. All three discuss the battle brown Raph and the slave master plus the Raph finding out about Rafina is different in the some of the versions. The t-Rex summon was the same across the board

    i liked some of the stuff on the encounter with the lord and raphtalia, i thought the manga had a better sequence of events, but i think a merge of both would be great, however, the way the anime handled them going to the dungeon and rescuing the demi-humans, i thought that was handled a lot better in the anime when compared to the manga

    They changed more aspects of the story:
    In the light novel Rifana actually died while Raphtalia was still with her in the cell and afterwards she broke down. Before the death she kept quiet during the torture. Afterwards she pretty much gave in and screamed and cried when the fat douche tortured her. This is also why she was the way she was in the first episode of shield hero. She was completely broken and near death.
    Btw. if you look back at episode one when she eats the first kids meal she held that flag as if she cared about it. That was because of the flag they talked about in this episode. When the fat guy tortured Raphtalia he showed her images of the village she wanted to go back to. It was completely destroyed and everyone that wasn't enslaved was dead. He was taunting her that her flag meant nothing anymore.
    One more thing. It wasn't Noafumi suggesting to bury Rifanna. Because Raphtalia knew that her friend was dead she was looking for her body and she wanted to bury her. I'm not sure if they will show in the Anime where she'll bury her friend though.
