    Battersea Power Station
    Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott
    Built in 1930s.
    Largest brick building in Europe.
Wasn’t popular at the time as it was an eye-sore.
They had a fire in 1964 causing blackouts all over London.
(Remember power cuts in the 70s?)
Closed down in 1983 and remained empty until recent Malaysians bought it.
Turning it into flats, luxury sports venue, gym and restaurants.
    Pink Floyd “Animals” album 1977
Inflatable pig drifted into Heathrow air space.
Police tracked it to Kent where it came down.
It was also used as Ministry of Love in 1984 with John Hurt. Also in Superman 3.
    Battersea Dogs home
Opened in the 1860s as sanctuary for animals in need of help and doesn’t turn any away.
Holds over 260 dogs and cats.
1883 they accepted cats but only just changed its name in 2002 to avoid prejudice.
2011 they started Staffies (they’re softer than you think) campaign.
They even have a pet etiquette school to help dogs get used to a new life.
It housed 100 of Shackleton’s dogs before his disastrous trip to the South Pole.
    Battersea Park
1858 - it was all marshland.
First place asparagus was grown in UK known as “Sparrow Grass".
Red House Tavern attracted ne-er do-wells and the area became notorious for brawls and duels. Access was from wooden Battersea bridge.
Duke of Wellington fought a duel with the Earl of Winchelsea for his Catholic emancipation act.
He was the last Prime Minister to fight a duel but he just shot into the air.
1st Association rules football match took place here 1864.
1985 Peace Pagoda commemorates Hiroshima donated by Bhuddist monks.
    Albert Bridge
1873 - John Betcheman said it was one of the beauties of the London river.
Swayed when it opened so “all troops must break step when marching” Nicknamed “Trembling Lady".
Half suspension and half cantilever (Bazagette added suspension).
Same designer who did the rooves of the Albert Hall and St Pancras station.
Still has toll booths on it (only bridge that does).
Continues to deteriorate because of dogs doing their business on the timber decking.
1992 they made it more visible so painted it and added bulbs.
Features in Clockwork Orange and Absolute Beginners.
Battersea Square is a preety square near to St Thomas Battersea school where Prince George attends. Also Battersea Flower Station is nearby.

Joolz. While you were at Battersea Square, it might have interested you to know that Prince George's now former school overlooks the site of Bennetts, which was a night spot run by Princess Margaret's one-time beau, Roddy Llewellyn in the 70s and 80s. Apparently it featured a glass dance floor with piranhas swimming underneath. When Bennetts opened, local residents were not enamoured with the notion of "Hooray Henrys" cavorting in their down-at-heel neighbourhood (this was before the wine bars and pedestrianisation) and their protests and picketing culminated in the premises being daubed with white paint. So it's interesting that the new locals seem now to belong to those same affluent classes. I spent my teens living about 100 metres to the south but 100 metres to the north is St Mary's Church, where William Blake was married and Benedict Arnold was buried.

In Battersea Park you should have mentioned the Little Brown Dog riots.Anti vivisection demos between 1903/7. See commemorative statue. My dad, born 1911 in Battersea remembers kids going to school barefoot. The area has now become very expensive.

Hi lovely Joolz, I have a suggestion that can possible help some of your viewers (me included :)). When you make some brilliant points (Like how Association Rules Football leads to the word soccer) it may be helpful to have the text on the screen to solidify the fact, to show the link visually. Without seeing the words sometimes a really interesting fact like that can wash over me without sinking in, and I have to pause the video if I really want it to sink in, but seeing the words would help me process and remember the fact better. The same would be helpful in cases where you're describing origins and meanings of place names - some overlaying text showing the place name, and the words it's made up of, would be brilliant to help the info really stick, - - if it's not too much of a bother for you to add :)
Just thought I'd also take this opportunity to say: thank you for your fabulous videos! I love them lots like jelly tots!

Just started watching your videos, brilliant, then I see you have one on my place of birth, Battersea!!! Still miss it. The church on the river, St Mary's was where Turner used to sit and sketch the Thames, his chair is still there! Both mum and aunt got married there!. And the asparagus link, they used to be sold in battersea bundles, plus also famous for lavender, fergie used to live in lavender Hill and the kinks wrote a song about.
Did notice you avoided the rough bits like the junction and my old estate, winstanley, probably a good idea lol.
Still a great video thank you Joolz

In high school physics my teacher taught us about resonant frequency. It is what creates the hum of a crystal glass when running your finger around the ridge. Anyway, resonant frequency is what makes bridges bend and twist. Usually contributed by the span of the bridge and the speed of the wind hitting the bridge. If you.want to see it in action, Google the Tacoma Narrows bridge.

Blimey Joolz - You kindly pointed me to this video, which I'd somehow missed, and it bloomin' opens with a paraphrased quote from one nearly all-time favourite TV series, 'Knight Rider'! ('The A-Team' just beats it). You missed the chance for some post editing fun though when talking about 'Monkey' - you could have done some poorly dubbed out-of-sync action there!
But great video. Other appearances of Battersea Power Station include it appearing, half destroyed, in the classic William Hartnell 'Doctor Who' story 'The Dalek Invasion of Earth' (1964). Battersea Park is lovely in it's layout (I visited first time since I was very young this week, hence looking for the video); I was looking for the Brown Dog riots statue, an extremely controversial statue in it's time. Also, sad fact, in the 1970s Battersea Gardens was the site of the world's most fatal roller coaster incident.
Hearing you mention Bazalgette (who I'm only now just starting to fully appreciate his works and read up on) gives me suggestion for maybe a new video threat - iconic engineers who changed London. James Henry Greathead and the iconic Brunel would also be good subjects; as their works can still be seen in so many places in London. ...I'm starting to sound like my own dad now, I'll shut up.

Thank you for showing a lesser known side of London, and speaking of beers, do a video about hand pump beers and local breweries. Hand pumps and non-carbonated beers are unique to Britain, most tourist end up drinking regular beers, they simply ignore the deliciousness of non-carbonated beers one can find, for example at The George Inn.
On another note, I have noticed that if your put London at the beginning of your video titles, your videos are easier to find, more people should discover your channel. Thanks again, keep it up!

Hello Joolz. Is the Beehive Pub still there in Chelsea at the foot of the Albert Bridge? Or was it the Five Bells? 🤔

I'm sure that the Battersea Flower Station was in the comedy 'Bloomers' with Richard Beckinsale.

Don't worry, if I hire you for a walk it will definitely not include a pub crawl. I'm allergic to alcohol. That developed when I was in my 30s so I do actually know what I'm missing. Oh for a cider! *sigh*

The music from 1:90 to 2:00 sounds very much like "South American Chase" from the soundtrack to "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid". Not a bad track, but I don't get the connection.
Oh, and as always a wonderful bit of film. Yours, not BCATSK, which I hated when I was 15.

Thanks. It's a bit of both. Certainly I need to read a bit about South London as I'm not from that part. Things are always changing too, which doesn't help. I know a fair bit about the centre and north just from living here.
