As a hopelessly addicted spinning wheel collector, I highly approve of this purchase! The wheel itself is beautifully unwarped, which means it was well care for. You could make a distaff fairly easily, and a few bobbins too, I think. You bought yourself a beautiful wheel!

I hope that you make one or more videos showing the refurbishment process. That would be very interesting.

No no, you should always press the buy button for old Welsh spinning wheels!! My mother can never resist a spinning wheel that needs a home. I look forward to following your journey as you restore it and spin wonderful things!

and as you said it looks handmade, well done Harry. You will have to make a authentic Spinners Chair now. Colin

Looks like all you need is some leather bearings and a few capture pins. Nice find. Good Fortunes 🤝

Tom may not be interested in spinning wheels but I bet he'll enjoy the empty box. ; ) And, it's a really lovely wheel.

According to my other half, who knows about such things, It is a flax wheel. There should be a distaff sticking up from the horizontal part near the flyer and bobbin. Also the drive band is one single large loop which goes around the large drive wheel, the bobbin and flyer. Have fun the the restoration.

Hi Harry I am. Beginner spinner- 4 years on spindles. I acquire a saxony double drive that I am planning to restaure. I cleaned and loosen all the moving part. I feel that I now learnt all the name and fonction of the moving part but still not quite getting it to spin yarn. The guild I am involved with does not seem interested. The band keep jumping and the bobine will take the yarn for few seconds and stop. So exciting and infuriating at the same time. Would you be my mentor? I wish you well.

You could have bought something far worse! You will soon be spinning your own wool for socks! Beware, spinning is addictive. My Mum gave me hers and now I spin daily! I weave too but thats another story. Yours is not in bad condition. Great stuff.

I am seeing this for the first time almost 4 years later. Did you successfully get the spinning wheel going? It looked like quite a project to attempt in this case. I hope that you did start spinning on it.

Where we get the word spinster. The single girls would spin and as they got older but didnt manage to marry, they were spinsters.

Hi Ibrahim, its used for spinning sheeps fleece into wool for knitting and weaving. I suspect this is a very old one from the 19th Century.
