There's a shift in anime culture. Anime is trendy and mainstream where as before it was niche. But the irony to all this is that a lot of the anime that was made back in the day when it was still niche is niche today. Case in point, have any of you guys heard that Magic Knight Rayearth is getting remade for its 30th anniversary? I didn't until recently. And nobody I've talked to personally even l knows what that show is. I don't see it being marketed or mentioned anywhere. And what makes it funny to me is that it's a CLAMP show targetted towards girls. It's pretty much Sailor Moon with mechs. So when you mentioned in the end that women are driving up the popularity of anime, I cracked a grin and shook my head. You aren't wrong, but certain shows are being gatekept from the wider audience as a whole.
Great video! I agree, anime is WAY more mainstream than video games now. It's for the better but I feel this a big part of why everything is so 'clean' and a little homogenized now. I also noticed that certain types of people force themselves to watch any and everything to claim they have good/niche taste instead of just developing a pallet of what they like and moving on.
Yeah. The “watch everything” mentality never came across as sincere or natural to me. I still respect it somewhat because I do think it comes from a place of wanting to know more about the medium, but its definitely different from just enjoying anime organically
The shift in anime fandom like late 00s to early 2010s with western fans crawling through seasonal show charts is interesting cause i don't even think viewers in Japan watch anime like that generally. Like they catch it in the same way as you brought up when anime just became regular tv like any other show you wanna check out.
You know what. I never even realized that the seasonal show style of watching things was recent and mostly a Westerner thing. I probably could’ve guessed it but yeah never consciously realized that til you brought it up. Interesting point.
Steins gate was goated. Also i agree the old art style is a reason why i fell in love with it. It is too clean nowadays. Im still an avid watcher but its not the same.
I love steins gate. I gave it a rewatch recently and it definitely feels so much more genuine and distinct from other mainstream animes nowadays. I don’t really vibe with the new philosophy of just attention-grabbing, fast paced shonen. I just pick a few animes or mangas I really enjoy that stand out and consume it casually.
@@gchu_ Yes! I consider Steins;Gate a classic. And honestly your method seems like the healthiest way to engage with anime. Just find what clicks with you instead of trying to keep up with all the hottest things
