Thanks for sharing this. It was interesting and awesome how it was all popped at once. But I couldn't help but notice the street vendor and the lady behind him, pick up some that had dropped on the ground and bag it for selling. Um...looking past that...
The grim reality is that China, which severely limited the number of days coal miners could work, in order to force production down (and limit pollution) has had to ease up on this restriction, in view of a winter shortage of fuel. The choice has come to down either choking or freezing to death. They have apparently chosen the former. Don't forget that India is also ramping up domestic coal production (among other countries). When these big guys start mining, and selling, millions of tonnes, the effect of the air pollution from this puffed rice seller will not be quite so pronounced.
This would never be allowed on the street in the USA. If the cops rolled up on someone making popcorn like this they would draw there guns and tasers and it would be on the news.
?? Well, it might be several hundred psi but the heat is central! It causes the materials to become a little plastic, and also full of superheated steam. SO the product can turn into a foam when the pressure is released.
Omg. If I had to hear them blow the rice up outside of my apartment one more time I was seriously going to go to Texas on them! They do it all day long outside of my apartment here in Shanghai
It's amazing what ceases to be entertaining when it gets set up right outside your window. Hell, look at what happened when the Beatles started jamming on a rooftop...

That old lady in the blue shirt in the background was amused by how intrigued and amused the camera dude was. She said, in Chinese, "He laughed!"
Awww, this reminds me of my childhood so much! I dont see this kinda vendor any more.Almost brought me into tears. Thanks for posting this video!
Nice video you have done, congratulations! Just enjoyed the way you treat the people there, very kind with them. Be happy!
2:53, That lady didn't even miss a beat.
Even if I understand this as mostly just a novelty method to pop rice or corn, this is still one of the coolest things I've ever seen.
Too funny, the narration and the spinning thing
that chamber is one beautiful machine
what a complete different methods to the way they puff the rice in India where they use sand to puff it.... thanks for sharing the nice video....
The grandma in blue is very funny.
That was really neat. Did you buy anything? Pay them for letting you film? :-)
wow that's so cool :) great commentary from your part by the way. good job.
What kind of rice is used? When I tried to pop rice in my Chinese grain popper it all burnt and solidified in the popper.
The original was wheat shot from a civil war cannon by a guy in Minnesota.

i love that, I had that all the time while I was little. Tastes sweet.
Rice: 100 psi, Corn: 180 psi
Great job. Nice to see manual cooking of this healthy food.
The sweetener is benzosulphimide, and that's not healthy. Actually, the original flavor pop rice smells and tastes more pleasant.
And should we suppose it's also nice to see all the healthy coal smoke that is generated?

Byron Black what do you say about people in the US BBQ in their backyard using coal? Just curious.
Great 👍
Amazing ❤️

And that was 10 years ago!
So awesome!
since it's a popcorn cannon I assume that white ingredient is gunpowder.

Pounds is a unit of mass (sometimes force). Pressure is force/area, hence pounds per square inch.
My childhood memories. 🏺🍯🌾😊
The old man's fly is down LOL
I enjoyed this video! Thanks for sharing it :)
I wonder if that would work without the heat. Get a bead blaster, remove the nozzle, put 150psi in it then release the pressure.

cool video, thanks for sharing!

@kabayangila yep. it might be ok if it was a clean polished ceramic floor... but it's asphalt road.. in china...
Five second rule applies universally, without exception. No harm no foul.

Pounds per square inch you mean...PSI.
Goddamnit pounds is not a measure of pressure.
It is a unit for pressure here in America, especially in engineering. In scientific research we use pascals though.
Pressure o'meter
I don't know what part of the US you're from, but I see this done all the time with popcorn at state fairs, county fairs, street fairs, and festivals.
