    From the ashes of autism; from the downpour of animu waifu overload; from the turmoil of a vanishing can of sardines, and the memory of a memory of a memory, a shitlord with crippling depression returns from the depths of cancerous memes to once again seek his glory among the stars!
    But first, he must make a pit-stop at the local gas station to refill his spaceship, for it managed to take down the greatest foe of all foes: A Dorraborilian! YES! He took it down! A mighty task indeed. The monster put up a great fight, but it had one weakness it could never defend itself against. With the force of a million planets, Hollow flew into its very of center of gravity and threw a bag of corn at it... and the great beast that threatened the galaxy was defeated. Unfortunately, the ship has AWFUL GAS MILEAGE, hence the gas station.
    OH YEAH! Fate/Stay Night was involved somewhere in there, but I forgot its place in the story. Maybe Hollow can tell you all about it. I'm just a Jellyman from the planet Labatoast. I like paste. Do you like paste? I like paste so much that I--

    *Note:* This Fate/Stay Night review was meant to be a single video that went on for over an hour-and-a-half. However, while editing, I realized one truth about the project: It would take *FOREVEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRR* to piece it all together, between skimming the visual novel for usable footage (which takes quite a while to do because of how long it is) and actually editing it all together. So after thinking about it and making a little poll of Twitter, I decided to split the video into parts, as to have something to release to you guys.
    I'll be releasing the rest as I go along through the editing process. I intend to start recording UBW footage next, with Heaven's Feel after that, and I even talk about the anime adaptations in its own dedicated section. For now, here's the section about the Fate route.

    Also i just want to say(because i forgot to mention this) THANK YOU for pointing out Arturia and Shirou's duopolies in character. This is something people usually gloss over or didnt even make the connection to when talking about their relationship. They understand each other in a fundamental way specifically because of how broken they are regarding the chains of their pasts and is also why they fit so well together as a partnership and pair.
    This relationship is so fundamental IMO to Fate itself, not only because of the Fate route, but because it encompasses Archer's own failures later in UBW and the primary thesis of Fate Zero in Kiritsugu and his own relation with Arturia. In Archer's case, he's the person Arturia was warning Shirou he had a chance of becoming, had he not had her as a buffer to change that outcome.
    Kiritsugu for his part mirrors Archer in a lot of ways, coming to fully understand the meaninglessness of his mission only at the end point and despairing, but erstewhile stilling having the same fundamental noble goal of Arturia, even though they clashed over the respective methods the other took based on their individual experiences(Arturia even states that she had to act as cold as Kiritsugu during her kingship to get results, and that's why its so ironic that they are unable to understand one another despite being so similar)
    Archer Shirou in his timeline was specifically unable to find his "reason" to move beyond his desperate attempt at filling the emptiness in his heart unlike the Shirou of the 3 routes who surpassed him. That's why the ideal was able to destroy him and make him regret his life. Archer's regret being very similar to Arturia's regret at the end of her life.
    The grail and Alaya being similar narrative constructs for redoing their past mistakes but still finding no respite in that, and coming to the same conclusion in both Fate and UBW, that as long as they didn't regret their actions in life that those actions in themselves could never be wrong are obvious mirror images ect)
    Fate route shows us the Shirou that had the distinct possibility of following Archer, but with Arturia's guidance and conversely being able to save her this time, they were able to save each other. Its poetic beauty that i think always gets glossed over.
    This is why i always find Last Episode(the epilogue of Fate route) placed at the end of the story when having all routes completed to be most poignant when it comes to the thematic nature of Shirou's character because it envokes Shirou, Archer, Kiritsugu AND Arturia's struggles all into one big ball of hope in being able to transcend individual cycles of failure and repeating the same mistakes to find a real sense of happiness at the end of all the suffering.
    Anyways...im sorry i bored you with all this rambling, i just get on a tangent when it comes to Type Moon narrative themes and character motivations and relations and things like that...

    Great explanation of how different the characterization is between anime and VN, and great observation of how the Fate route is really mostly just meant to *introduce* Shirou's character while UBW challenges him and HF breaks him.
    Even simple things like the fact that *bad endings exist* go a long way into showing how Shirou, when accurately portrayed, isn't just mage Kirito who deus-ex-machina's his way out of every situation.
    Nasu's writing style, which some people believe to be rather obtuse, showcases so many things greatly. He loves to just repeat just a word, or a phrase, or sometimes a picture, over and over again for that sweet *emphasis* and while it can seem pretty on-the-nose at certain points, when it works it **really** works. Whatever he's trying to get across, he gets across. Whether its the main character's PTSD, or them slowly going insane, or them having a panic attack over a fucking chair, he really knows what he's doing.
    Good defense of the Fate route as well. I quite like it and while I prefer the Saber-Shirou relationship as a bromance, I think that Saber's character arc and Shirou's role in that was executed pretty well. The parallels between the two works very well.
    You should talk more about the brilliant sound design too. The Realta Nua performances enhance so many scenes far beyond what they were before, and the use of the soundtrack perfectly reflects what Shirou is thinking in each moment and captures the tone of the scene. Even the music that plays when he has sex with Saber for the second time literally *sounds* like lightheadedness, like "oh my god oh my god i'm about to fuck this pretty bitch king arthur holy shit im gonna faint", haha.

    Very late, but you said something a bit inaccurate
    When shirou was watching the fight, and lancer activated his noble phantasm, even shirou could tell that archer was *fucked* , so he intentionally garnered attention to himself, knowing that he would possibly die in the process
    7:06 -7:14
    A beginning example of shirou *not giving a fuck about his own well being*

    Thank you for giving the Fate route the praise it deserves. Even fans of the VN tend to dismiss it as the weakest route. Even if that's true, the other routes are only great because of the groundwork laid in Fate.
    I loved your analysis of how Shirou and Saber mirror each other as characters, and how their relationship is about two people forged by tragedy healing each other.
    I'm still kinda bummed that the Fate route is the only one where Shirou doesn't get a happily ever after with the secondary protagonist of that route. Yes, she does get a happy ending in the Good End of UBW. But it's not really the same without the Fate route's revelations and the build-up of their relationship.
    I wish that they'd do a remastered version of the game with a "Good End" equivalent for the Fate route.

    I wouldn’t call it “niche Japanese IP” anymore lol. It’s yearly IP sales at one point rivaled with Pokémon (which is by far the largest IP in the world btw) with FGO and other genres, and if you’re a manga/anime/game fan, than you should be aware of fate franchise at this point (whether you’re invested in it or not is a different topic).

    Great review. Even though Fate route is considered the weakest by the majority of people(not me) you still managed to show the many positives on this route.
    You pretty much hit most if not all the points on why I liked the romance of the Fate route and I commend you for that. I rank all the routes the same for different reasons. I like Fate for its thematic romance, I like UBW for its deep dive on Shirou's ideals and the action, and I like HF for its dark tone and subversions. I hate comparing all three since they offer me different things.
    Can't wait for your future reviews on UBW and HF!

    With all its flaws, this is my favorite route in the whole game and makes Saber my favorite character in the whole Nasuverse. I especially hate when people act like she's bland and perfect, when everything the route does is showing her grow and face her failures, which is why I love her tragic character.
    Ufo, just do it, give us a proper adaptation and put an end to my misery.

    • @JoshuaDMarti
      @JoshuaDMarti 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That last bit about people disliking Saber for being perfect is so ironic cus the whole series literally tells you she messed big in many things, Zero itself doesn't really gives her a free pass continually criticizing her rule and ideals and even GoA has Merlín saying things like she indeed never understood her men and sort of. So it's basically people that just mindlessly simp for the sake of it.

    A great Review! The visual novel is definitely the best version of stay night. Personally, I think you can get Shirou's Psychological problems in the ubw and heavens feel anime.
    It's not that obvious sadly and you have to pay alot of attention to the dialogs. The visual novel make it much easier to understand him on a different level.

    • @TamerainProductions
      @TamerainProductions  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure if this was a drive-by or not, but I'd say I liked Apocrypha much more than Last Encore.
      As you said though... It does have problems.

    • @soarel325
      @soarel325 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My main issues with Apocrypha are that the forced romance at the end had poor chemistry and was tacked on (Jeanne and Sieg had a parent-and-child relationship, not a romantic one, and all the setup existed for him to get with Astolfo instead), and how Amakusa was objectively right, yet the story acted as if there was something wrong with his plan and Jeanne and Sieg were heroes for stopping him from doing something good for the world. Besides that, it's excellently paced, the main theme is well executed, most of the major characters are likeable and the minor characters entertaining, and the fights in the anime have beautiful, fluid animation which is very rare in recent anime. Most of the complaints about Apocrypha revolve around people who just don't fundamentally understand Sieg's relevance to the story's main theme, and fail to realize the fact that he's not actually the main protagonist, Jeanne is. I wrote a little essay about this which you can read here: pastebin.com/nSk92JtF this guy's thoughts are also worth reading: imgur.com/a/whAhvJC
      Last Encore, on the other hand, is a fucking trainwreck. It's trying to be both a sequel to Fate/Extra and an adaptation of it and doesn't really commit to either. They failed to give the audience-surrogate protagonist a compelling narrative arc or relevance to the actual plot (the whole dead face thing doesn't really line up with anything else thematically), and do I even need to mention how lame the fight scenes were? A much better idea would be a reworked adaptation of Extra that incorporated all of the cut content related to Twice. If you look at some of the interviews about extra, a ton of stuff was cut from the original game. From the final boss and the cutscenes around him, you can clearly tell what the original plot of the game was going to be before they reduced it to just “pick a waifu and fight some servants”. I would have loved to see the whole story about war and human progress as seen through the lens of Twice Pieceman.

      @@TamerainProductions But I little bit disagree about your perception on character development of shirou in unlimited blade works. In my opinion, He realize the true nature of his personality that he just try to become hero to copy that smile on kiritsugu. He is just a hollow like kirei who get pleasure by making other happy without any reason. He has not any morality. His morality is just made by his dream. He also understand true nature of his ideology but he still chases it because the conclusion is beautiful of his dream. His dream is not childish like you think. He is like us humans who wants to create a utopia but it is impossible but we didn't disregard it instead we follow it to achieve. We can't achieve but this force us to make a better world for living. This democracy is also formed due to someone's dream of utopian world. Shirou's ideal is nearly impossible but not childish. In the end, he understands his personality that he becomes a sociopath who just saves other people to get happiness in his life. But he still accept it because his ideology lead to a better world.That's the big picture that Archer lost. He was too fixated on the people he had to kill, he lost sight of his original goal. He pursued it because it found it beautiful to make everyone happy. It is not wrong to follow his dream if it has beautiful conclusion. Yes he kills many people but he was able to make a better world for whole humanity. It is the development of shirou over Archer.
