A few people have pointed out that I missed the twist at the end. I admit, I did not pick up on this on the first watch. Such an amazing piece of writing - painful for me to watch myself back 😂
In my defence, my brain naturally focuses on music, performance and production so I sometimes miss lyrics or plots where music is involved. I was also trying to recognize the lane at the end as I'm familiar with Brighton. Not to mention other thoughts and distractions while filming a reaction. I think I was too entranced by other aspects of this amazing, multi-faceted performance but I thoroughly enjoyed the journey all the same!
Anyway, kudos to Ren for this incredible writing. Sorry for if I disappointed anyone by not picking up on this.

I've watched so many reactions of this masterpiece and to be honest I do get a little disappointed when people miss it. I can't remember if I got it when I first watched it. I think I did but anyway I saw that you was absolutely blown away by what you watched / heard. For me, that's what makes this a brilliant reaction. Believe it or not, some people just don't see it's a masterpiece.

This is such an enthralling tale.
Ren says he's working on a proposal to Netflix to do a show based around this style of storytelling. "Very, very dark stories," he says.

I also love how he uses the acoustics of the location to add to the music. He obviously puts a lot of thought into everything he does.

Yes, a master lyricist and brilliant storytelling in his unique and multi-layered update of the Bardic tradition. Ren said he taught himself guitar from the internet - Amazing. Very well done. Ren brings us into the frame with an immediacy as if we are standing right there witnessing the action. As one viewer commented; "I didn't know whether to keep watching or press pause and run to the phone and dial 999!"

Ren talks in his interview with Justin Hawkins about his development/teaching himself to hold the attention of whomever happened to come upon him busking. When people buy tickets to a show, they are enough of a fan to go to the concert, so a performer already has their initial attention, but busking requires such different skills. It’s a great interview, but quite long, so breaking it up into segments while watching worked best for me & my ADHD. He also tells the story of being signed with Sony & why it didn’t work out. 😢💜

Your reactions are SPOT ON!!!! It’s so refreshing that Ren is allowing his audience, some too young to have had first hand experience, to see the raw beauty of a an artist with an instrument and a voice. Not having all the frills and autogenerated technology helps remind us of the foundation of the arts. We are so very fortunate to get to witness the work of a living legend in real time ❤

Always enjoy your reactions, thank you.
The story seems to be partially true. There was apparently a news story about a 14 yr old boy who killed a very young girl in "high heel shoes" (which made people assume she was a streetwalker - in Ren's telling, 'she'd walked them a 1,000 X before'). Ren wrote Jenny. Awhile later he followed with Screech, and some months later with Violet. Perhaps he had the whole picture in his mind from the beginning, but from the timing it sounds like the story stayed in his head and he continued to think about how it all might have come to pass... It's a heart-wrenching story that makes me think about domestic violence and generational transmission of trauma. Screech was as violent and impulsive as his dad, and Jenny froze, as her mom had.

Ren is the Original "Bardcore Genre Bender" The Master Bard himself ( Shakespeare ) would have understood exactly where Ren was coming from. Ren isn't just a songwriter but rather a Performance Art Master who blends music and character acting from all the styles over the last 500 years and makes it modern and relatable to all generations even if normally you may not be a fan of whatever genre he is currently performing. The Ren Rabbit Hole is Deep and Powerful! Get Ready for the Ride of your Life!

parts 1 and 2 are based on a true story, Ren read an article several years prior to their creation about a 14 year old boy stabbing a young prostitute, and was later killed by police. The article ended with the quote, "It's such a shame". Ren wanted to bring awareness to the way we hear these awful stories on the daily, call it a shame, and go about our days. So, in 2019, he took some liberties and personified them. Jenny got her high heeled shoes, and screech got his knife. He made both tracks circle back to the beginning to signify how it happens over and over, and ending each part with that same quote, It's such a shame.
A couple of years later, he wrote Violets tale. Purely fictional, but true to the originals forms, it too circles back. He added the 2005 to stay true to Screech's age in the originals, and not only circled back the song, but the entire saga as well. Even the characters themselves. Screech took the traits of the father, drugs, violence, and even the panic after the fact, while jenny, a prostitute, took the several forms of abuse, and her mother's silence.

I've enjoyed both of your last two reactions. Your knowledge of the guitar shows. I think you would really enjoy two of his live acoustic performances very much. Both Animal Flow and Genesis have the acoustic versions and they are both amazing. This has been a favorite of mine, for the creative way they are able to strip the visuals of the video to the bare bones yet still leave you feeling like you have watched a masterpiece. I'm not sure if you've heard but Ren has said that his dream is to use these theatrical performances as proof of ability to produce content for a series similar in style to this, Hi Ren and Money Game.

Thanks for your reaction. I'm told that Ren saw a newspaper account of a young prostitute killed by a street kid, who was subsequently killed by police. Based on that he wrote Jenny's Tale and Screech's Tale. A couple of years later he wrote Violet's Tale to complete the story. That was all Ren. I'll leave the interpretation and meaning for your own life to you.

He truly is a modern day bard. The vivid imagery draws you in even when you don’t want to because it’s making you physically uncomfortable - especially in Violet’s Tale. He demands your attention. And he uses that power to shed light on far too real issues. Ren is special.

The basic simplified back story on this trilogy is that Ren saw an article on the back pages of a newspaper, a short article about an walker who was killed, and the article ended with "what a shame". He thought that was cold and disingenuous, and wrote the first two, and added charter 3 a bit later

Hey kerel! Wow, this guy is an artist in any way you look at it. Have to admit he's not a part of any of my daily playlists but he should be, I guess!
After hearing 'Hi Ren' for the first time in your reaction back then, it was obvious he's a musical and lyrical genius, and this trilogy proves that once more, I think!

You had zero reaction to the twist at the end, (and made zero reference to it during your closing thoughts) so I have to assume you didn't get it. Violet was Jenny and Screech's mother, they were born twins separated at birth. Screech unknowingly killed his twin sister.

The story's all Ren's. He read in a newspaper about a 14 year old boy killing a young woman and started wondering what would cause someone so young to do that, what the circumstances of the young woman were etc and off he went. Ren draws you in so well, that some fans think that more of this tale is from real life than is the case. The initial spark was no more than a very brief tabloid paragraph about a 14 year old boy killing a young woman. That's it. The rest is Ren. The dates are so specific because the first 2 parts were done in 2019. Jenny and Screech were twins and we know that Screech/James was 14. Therefore they were born in two zero zero five, 2005. Thus Violet gave birth and died in 2005.
In art, all interpretations are valid and Ren usually doesn't say much about meanings because he enjoys hearing his fan's take but he has made his thoughts known about a couple of points here, because a lot of people were missing them. Firstly, Jenny was a prostitute, hence having walked those streets a thousand times and wanting to escape. Secondly, Screech couldn't find his friend, Patrick. He wasn't home and Screech's girlfriend was 'busy'. Where could they both be? ;)
It's also interesting how Screech had a similar character to his violent and abusive father, (and grandfather) whilst Jenny seemed to share the quiet, passive character of her mother (and, it's implied, her grandmother).
The whole piece is an artistic masterpiece, with Ren playing with the idea of a medieval bard but one of the artistic little touches that I really appreciated, simple yet beautifully done, is how he begins Screech's Tale with, "Our story it starts, right at the end..." and finishes Screech's Tale with, "Our story it ends, right at the start...". A lovely little artistic flourish, that some miss, so I always feel is worth pointing out. :)

All parts are one take live videos. Filmed without permission or closeing the streets. People where shouting at him to shut up. And he do it not only one this videos.
Ren makes a lot of people cry. Also reactors were crying in front of the camera.
So get prepaird with handkerchiefs or avoid following songs:
    Chalk outlines (live with Chinchilla)
How to be me (live with Chinchilla)
    Suicide
    For Joe
    Freckled Angels
    Crutch feat. Bibi

Question, did you really need the captions? I ask because IMO it takes away from the visuals. You spent half the time reading the captions than actually watching the performance as I can see your eyes bouncing up and down. You even said you hear everything yet you still continued reading. Don't mind me. It's a disservice to your ears as I know you are reading the words before Ren sings them and it's not fair to the ears that the eyes get first knowledge of the words. THIS is probably why you missed the twist at the end I am assuming as you had no reaction to it. Also, you had no reaction at the mention of Violet being pregnant because you read it before hearing it.
Anyway, I know by the time you read this (or not) that Violet was Jenny & Screech's mother. I'll leave you with this:
Jenny & Screech were aligned side by side at birth and death!

    • @ThomFoolery1
      @ThomFoolery1  ปีที่แล้ว +3

I left them on by mistake. I admit I missed this great twist.
I don't think captions were the cause though. It's more me and my silly brain. I naturally fixate on the music, thinking about chord sequences, techniques etc. So I sometimes miss lyrics or storyline details. I'm terrible at following plots of musicals for the same reason. Ren's art is so unique and multi-faceted. Not to mention all the other distractions and thoughts when filming a reaction.
It's unfortunate I missed such a big part of this but it's something I'm working on.
Someone else thanked me for leaving captions on for this since they're a non-native English speaker so at least there's that. 🤷‍♂️
Anyway, thanks for the feedback. Ill bear it in mind 👍

Bro. There's too much going on on the screen.
Your moving. The videos moving and then theres the blurred video doubling. And then your superimposed on a moving background too. And then the moving image of you onto of the moving background suddenly starts moving in yet another direction..
Mate. Eye strain, vertigo and motion sickness.
    Bro. Too much.
Do what you want bro, I'm just letting you know many people will find it off putting. I stopped the video after less than a minute due to it.
