No one brings the pure emotion to this song like Renee Fleming. Her voice is heard and felt and transports you to another realm.

This is the best explanation of the aria, analysing the steps and feelings toward the end.

@@isengart Thank you so much for you I must admit I listen a lot to Antonio Pappano and others as well but the way you explain that specific song is just 100% and terrific my father studied music and singing in Vienna but that was many years ago and when I hear Jonas Kaufman I hear my father the same voice all the same unfortunately my late father couldn’t enjoy the technology which we got today. Die tote Stadt I went to listen to and see it in Salzburg Festival , I will look for the program where I mus ticket and the year I went .. please forgive me if there are any mistakes because I am partially sighted impaired and cannot check what I am dictating to the iPad to write..
I’ll be in touch again and just will end we saying to you thank you very much again.

@@raphaelhorowitz9594 Thank you for your kind message. What a treat to hear echos of one's father's voice in Jonas Kaufmann's....

I'm German and I often find it very regrettable when the lyrics of such beautiful songs are translated into English, because the poetry and emotions is lost by "simply" translating the words. Why. In such songs (or poems) special words are used and in a special combination. This style turns the text into a beautiful emotionally work of art. It evokes deep and poignant feelings. Many thanks to Daniel. Here he has beautifully translated the deep meaning of the text into the English language. Bravo and thank you very much.

PLEASE FORGIVE MY TYPING IN ALL CAPS BUT IT IS THE ONLY WAY I CAN TELL WHAT I AM WRITING! THIS ANALYSIS IS IN ITSELF A PROFOUND WORK OF ART. YOU ARE AS DIVINE AS KORNGOLD'S MUSIC. MY WIFE HAS CHOSEN THIS SCENE TO BE PLAYED AT HER FUNERAL (HOPEFULLY FAR IN THE FUTURE) MAY HASHEM CONTINUE TO INSPIRE YOU CANTOR IN FLORIDA

    Glück, das mir verblieb,
rück zu mir, mein treues Lieb.
    Abend sinkt im Hag
    bist mir Licht und Tag.
    Bange pochet Herz an Herz
    Hoffnung schwingt sich himmelwärts.
    Wie wahr, ein traurig Lied.
    Das Lied vom treuen Lieb,
    das sterben muss.
    Ich kenne das Lied.
Ich hört es oft in jungen,
    in schöneren Tagen.
Es hat noch eine Strophe --
    weiß ich sie noch?
    Naht auch Sorge trüb,
rück zu mir, mein treues Lieb.
    Neig dein blaß Gesicht
    Sterben trennt uns nicht.
Mußt du einmal von mir gehn,
    glaub, es gibt ein Auferstehn

Hi Daniel Thank you for your remarkable insights. Renee Fleming is coming to Columbus, Ohio Sept 25th 2021 and I hope she will sing this aria. Do you have a link to the libretto of the aria in German and in the English translation? I agree that Renee has an incredible interpretation and find myself listening to her over and over. I also read the wiki of Erich Wolfgang Korngold and he led a remarkable life. Thank you.

Nice. Well done. However, it also deserves mentioning that this is a duet (in the opera). That explains the change of moods, the realistion of the past etc. It is Paul who responds to Marietta. When sung as a concertaria, the singer sings both characters.

    • @isengart
      @isengart  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you. I am in fact pointing out in the video that, in the opera, this is a duet. My treatment here is aimed at singers who present it in recital, as is often done, whilst the opera is rarely produced.

This is not an aria, but a duet. It is sublime. You are attributing to Marietta Paul's thoughts and comments. ???
