@@CorporationSKY I guess that's a trade-off right? Try to analyze how long it is going to take you to get the 400k you need. 42:00 daily habits to do to actually grow: Know where you are - who are you at your very best, what are limiting beliefs, what is the story you're writing? Where you want to go - What do you actually want? What does success look like? - Decide what you'd do if you knew you wouldn't fail. - Think 5-10 years out, too many constraints in 1-2 years. - The 'how' is the killer of all great dreams How to get there - make a list of 30 things you can do to move towards that goal - list of 6 people that can help you on that - make a list of things you can read to help you on that - list of people who've done that thing before. Where are bottlenecks, where are they breaking down? What's gonna kill us that we need to extinguish? Most importantly: What's going well that we can do more of and scale?
Mentality is key; it can be easy to get discouraged by the mundane parts of building (a business, a new skill, etc.) but understand that consistency compounds and enjoy the ride!
This is by far the best podcast interview with a billionaire on TH-cam. Seriously, you guys nailed it. You tossed the ball, and he hit home runs. You had him explain and elaborate on things so well, and I appreciated that every reply he gave was based on actual applied experiences, something he learned from school, or from business. Thanks for posting this.
Love how graham talks humbly about his shortcomings in business and his failures in his path. A big thing you see in guys like this on TH-cam is lack in humility, and this guy just radiates it
Not sure I’ve spent a better 45 minutes on TH-cam than I have listening to this. Confirmed some beliefs, challenged others, gave me a LOT to meditate on. Many thanks for the wisdom!
This is gold and super sharp questions. We all know the power of compounding interest, but compounding effort is often overlooked. Couple that with rational, logical and well-cultivated self-belief to last through the long ride and we will get there, ultimately. Mr Weaver's talk on how to live an asymmetric life is also immensely powerful.
26:00 instead of asking myself what i "want" to do, i instead, albeit gently, asky myself what i NEED to do. I am still not accurate at what that exactly is, but ut ups the self reflective stakes a bit to help me get clear and really have things fall away that dont matter. I also ask myself if this particular issue will be important when i am 80.
Consistency is key, such a vital message for the younglings like me who have barely started their adult life. It's always about the long run, things may seem benign or painful in the short run, but its always the light at the end of the tunnel that should keep us going!
18:00 wow… take five minutes, write three things down that will get you closer to your goal & then DO THOSE THINGS or schedule those things. Then wake up tomorrow and do it again. Do this everyday for 3 months and you’ll reach your goal. It’s about creating momentum and inertia 19:45 writing down your goals, grabs a hold of your 95 to 98% negative thoughts that are subconscious… and you start to point that subconscious somewhere, towards a goal. Your subconscience starts assuming that identity and pursuing that goal. 24:30. If you knew you weren’t going to fail, what would you do? If you knew it would take 10 years to succeed, what would you do? Write down all the limiting beliefs so that they don’t swirl around in your head. Then they are not to do items and they are not scary anymore. 25:00 Example of a limiting belief: I don’t know how to finance my startup. It just becomes “I need to finance my start up.”
Great interview. I started out mowing lawns in my neighborhood when i was 13, and worked at my dad's gas station at age 8. The first 100k is the hardest by far.
I found the first $1M to be the hardest. That gap between $100K and $1M... I made many mistakes, like a lot, losing money left and right, then not investing, waiting, etc.
Insane insights! Loving the vibe. My key takeaways; - set clear goals on a daily basis - write down all limiting beliefs - write down 3 actions to do tomorrow
Hey jay. Thanks for interviewing this person and showing up in my algorithm. This is helping me a ton with my current state of uncertainty, anxiety, and depression from transitioning my career from banking to design. This is applicable for anything.
You're gonna do great! And feel WAY more fulfilled in your new role - just keep working hard, and every single day working towards your goals, even on the days it feels scariest and hardest! I promise you you WILL get through it Deju!!!
41:00 If you do this things, you will be successful: 1) Know where you are (limiting beliefs) 2) Know what you actually want Decide what you would do if you know you couldn't fail. (Within 5-10 years) (Don't worry about how) Make a list of 30 things you could do and 6 people who could help you accomplish that goal.
My takeaway is that it's okay to start small. Many of us, especially nowadays, assume that success comes instantly, but that's not the case. I, for instance, believed I would achieve success immediately after college. Now, at 25, I'm launching an Airbnb management business with the broader aim of establishing a foundation for a successful tech startup by 30. It's funny; this lesson seems intuitive, yet truly grasping its meaning often requires deeper reflection.
I feel like talks like this are awesome, but they have the unspoken premise that your life revolves only around one thing (building the best private equity company, becoming the best athlete etc.) but in reality there are different goals being a good father, as well as succeeding in your job, being a good friend etc. I would've loved to hear more about you asking him about how he juggles all of these responsibilities or not burning out.

God I see so much of myself in Graham. Hitting my mile stones has been the most depressing experiences of life. Ive found in life that if you get yourself in those flows states and just be present and enjoy each moment not only will the outcome be better but the accomplishments are better. You know your going to keep flowing and scaling what ever it is your doing. Its not about the money its just about expanding and being the best in what ever it is your doing. Why not be the absolute best? The only thing thats holding you back is the limitation you put on yourself. There is so much in this life to do and be apart of. Since i've been done worrying about how much money i'm worth ive made so much more hahah.
This guy is just fantastic, today he changed my mind, and I think this is what I needed in the long run, we’ll see how it turned out in some years, thanks a lot
Yoo, this is an insanely informative interview. I'm sure you've thought of it, but any chance a podcast is coming soon with more guests like Graham? Ik you're busy af with Stan so no worries, but leveraging your connections (like this) could really make for a great podcast.
So many takeaways: 1. set the goal 2. don't give up 3. actions is more important than motivation/inspiration 4. set the expectation to be fail first and gradually succeed in 10 years 5. stress comes from conflict. Choose ONE 6. Hire attributes, not experiences. 7. Find out where you are right now and where you want to do in 5-10 years, ignoring the how.
25:58 i literally paused and wrote down what i need to do to make sure I get to a new position in my company thats more intellectually rewarding than where i am today. In a few months i hope to have great news!
so the ideas of not looking for motivation or waiting for a magical thing to happen followed by further clarifying idea of using the negatively wired subconscious that is %95~ of the total though process of the brain, use that, set goals and write them down, rewire for momentum of connections towards a set goal
Great discussion. One point I want to call out is the determinant to achieving your goals has nothing to do with growing up poor. I grew up poor and for years believed that it helped me to be successful. So does this mean that my son who has grown up in an affluent family has less likelihood of being successful? Your success is all about the work you put in, it doesn’t give a shit about your conditions growing up. So in America, your actions and effort shape the path to success, in whatever way you define success. It’s important to know that no matter where you start, there is opportunity to achieve.
I agree with you on principle, though I personally still attribute a lot of my success thus far to just the sheer hunger/chip on the shoulder I had from growing up in humble means. I'm curious how you think about raising your son with that same humility or work ethic given he doesn't have as much 'struggle' around him! This is probably my top question that I have for raising children of my own one day.
What was your biggest takeaway?
Reply to this and let me know!👇

Thanks for the kind words Parker! No plans for an official podcast, but I plan on doing a lot more interviews like this in the near future :)
@@jayhoovy This is great to hear, keep it up John 🙌
This was a great talk, thanks for putting it together. So much knowledge and experience packed into 45mins.
This was so inspiring! I’m at Stanford but never realised we have such legends right in our campus.
Time to get my journal and figure out a way.
You gotta go work with Condoleeza Rice on campus!!!
20:30 “there’s no water in Ohio”. So Lake Erie isn’t water?
This is top quality content John! Keep it coming
So many pieces of golden nuggets were shared during the interview.
Great interview, I love when the interviewer is genuinely interested
Great video interview, please do more of those. Thank you so much
So many takeaways:
1. set the goal
2. don't give up
3. actions is more important than motivation/inspiration
4. set the expectation to be fail first and gradually succeed in 10 years
5. stress comes from conflict. Choose ONE
6. Hire attributes, not experiences.
7. Find out where you are right now and where you want to do in 5-10 years, ignoring the how.
Bro thank you for doing interviews like this.
You ask really good questions, keep it up!
You just earned a new subscriber. I’ve watched a lot of podcasts with similar advice - but this hit. Such clarity! Thank you both.
Great nuggets provided, tons of value that can be extracted.
Love how the first things he mentioned was habits like eating and sleeping well.
I love both of your guys' emphasis on the little things. Thanks for the great content.
This is a really good video. Would be great to see more long form interviews. Love the questions asked.
This 45 min interview went by so fast! It’s funny, the message is so powerful but at the same time so simple.
Day after day after day. Everyday is a blessing. We gotta live it like it’s our last.
I've watched many interviews and you truly are amazing at interviewing - very impressive Jay!
What a great podcast episode Jay, I really learned a lot from him and I'm trying to break into PE as a 24 year old.. This is gold !! :)
What does PE mean? Apology i am from kabul just on an intermediate level on english.
25:58 i literally paused and wrote down what i need to do to make sure I get to a new position in my company thats more intellectually rewarding than where i am today. In a few months i hope to have great news!
Let me know how it goes!! Wishing you all the best on your journey!
Thank you Graham ! 👏👏
Simply brilliant and very useful 🙏
The content is pure gold!
This popped up on my feed and I felt like I should watch. 26 min in and I'm happy I started watching 👍🏼
So glad to hear Michelle! Hoping it helps you a ton in your journey!
Great Interview, really inspiring. Keep up the good work mate!
wow first 30 seconds got me excited seems like legit advice, let's do this.
so the ideas of not looking for motivation or waiting for a magical thing to happen followed by further clarifying idea of using the negatively wired subconscious that is %95~ of the total though process of the brain, use that, set goals and write them down, rewire for momentum of connections towards a set goal
Such a great interview! This is my second time listening to this today, just because the ideas are so great. :) Thanks for sharing!
Awwww - cheers Rose!
This guy is an absolute boss
Great interview, and mic stands would make it amazing!
