  • SmartKom is an amazing device that allows you to combine antennas without having phase cancellation issues. Phase cancellation is a big problem when you have bad FB ratios that allow signals to sneak through unintended antennas . this causes more than one signal to be seen at the tuner and confuses the tuner and sometimes cancels the station. The video was created to help others set up the SmartKom and adjust as needed. It's mostly automatic, with the push of a button but sometimes you need to move stations around.
    SmartKom can do 90% of its own setup with just the push of a button (self-adjustment) but sometimes it may need some tweaking as you will see in the video...

    what an interesting product! I've been running three antennas in my attic for a while now. Due to the configuration of my attic and the placement of my chimney, I need 2 UHF antennas to bring in all the four majors reliably. The other antenna is a fringe VHF because, well, its VHF. With this, I could conceivably combine all three antennas and choose the antenna with the strongest signal for each one. Very intriguing! Thanks for sharing.

      Yes you have it correct. You can use all three inputs. If you wanted to add another Market you could combine one of your UHF and VHF antennas with a UVSJ, that would free up another input for a third Market. But yes, it's truly an amazing device.

    I purchased one of these and it does combine the antennas exceptionally well. I do however have a problem with it becoming disconnected from my phone. It will never reconnect until you do a Smartcom power-down reset. After the reset, my phone will find it again and everything works again. No big deal if you will be satisfied with the initial setup but annoying if you want to play around with adding or removing channels.

      I've heard that complaint from others also. Even Televes recommend a reboot when this happens. Yet, I never have had a problem with my Bluetooth connection between my phone and my SmartKom. I'm not sure what's going on there if it's a phone compatibility issue or what.
      I don't know if my Samsung phone has better Bluetooth or my SmartKom Bluetooth radio is better. Regardless, once it's set up, unless they had a completely new RF channel we should be golden. Because I do a lot of antenna experiments, I'm constantly rescanning and changing channel assignments and that's how I've noticed that I really never have to reboot my SmartKom to re-establish a Bluetooth connection. I read somewhere that that's a power saving feature to shut the Bluetooth radio off. I still don't understand why I don't have to do that every time I want to reconnect. Thank you for your input.

    Is your antenna grounded, I curently use a ground block. I was looking into the Smartkom and the manual I saw online says to run the coax to the indoor amplifier power supply as you did, Where would you put a ground?

    Doesnt that DB8e with its combiner already allow you to aim its two bay sections in different directions to pick up different TV markets?

    • @bobh.4580
      @bobh.4580  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Andrew, you are correct. The DB8e allows the Turning of each panel in different directions. Yes you can see in the video the closable combiner Box, which is well designed by the way.
      Problem I'm illustrating here is how to avoid phase cancellation caused by the collisions of unwanted signals coming through each unintended antenna. The SmartKom fixes that by blocking those unwanted signals and enhancing the wanted signals.

    Hey Bob, Thanks for the video. Helped a lot. I have two Televes Dinova boss mix pointing two different market antennas nearby, I get all the way through where I can get Televis Smartkom to show the channels it has picked up from each antenna... but when I goto hit scan TV channels to my Tablo DVR receiver... worse than a single antenna? Only gets a few channels, less than before using the Smartkom? Makes no sense, as I can see all the extra channels, and indivdually both antennas are aimed where they need to be... So why doesn't Tablo seem to like the Smartkom output? EDIT - I ended up sending back the first Smartkom, second one works fine...

      I just installed and uninstalled mine for this same reason! I only have a single attena hooked up at the moment but bought the Smartkom to add my second antenna. To my surprise when I scanned the channels again after hooking it up in the Channels app on my appletv I lost over 40 channels. I adjusted the anetenna and rescanned. This time 0 channels. I unplugged and rescanned without moving the antenna and bam 63 channels again. Does this actually work or should I return it?

      @@D90NAS77 I did get mine to work, but I definitely got a lemon the first time around I think.

      If you think it doesn't work right and you are sure you set it up correctly, try returning for a replacement.

    Very interesting product. Would this work as a standalone preamp for a single antenna? And add the 2nd or 3rd antenna at a later date?

      I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to you but I didn't see that I had any comments initially. Anyhow, yes you can use this as a leveling device for just one antenna. It will equalize your signals and you'll get a better viewing experience from equal signals

    Do a TH-cam search of "stabilize video on TH-cam". Your unstable video is very hard to watch. Your info is good but video technique needs assistance. I want to get a SmartKom and that is how I found your channel.

    The only problem is this is not designed for VHF only UHF

    • @bobh.4580
      @bobh.4580  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's true it is not sold as a VHF antenna but it does actually picks some VHF up, surprising me for me RF4, WOCK in Chicago.

      Oh I just realized you might be talking about the SmartKom, ... it is designed for VHF high and low.

      The video doesn't have to be perfect for you to get the meaning. It's not easy holding the camera when you're doing something with your other hand.

      You can buy an electric gimbal to completely smooth the camera motion in one hand. Mechanical gimbal works too and is cheaper, but not as versatile and usually heavier.
