I have Shapton Kuramaku in 320 and 1000, just ordered the 2000. You are improving very quickly. I have been working on my freehand and getting better too. Thank you for the edge closeups. Very nice.
A channel named virtuovice sold me on a bunch of stones over the years. I currently use the Shapton 1000, 2000 and I ditched the 5000 for a Naniwa Chosera 3000 stone with stand as a finishing stone with much better results. Food for thought...
Could you try out a vitrified diamond stone, like of BBB? Its buy once cry once, but supposedly extremly nice. You keep saying that many steels dont "need" diamond which is true, but diamond is still sicnificantly more efficient. Only reason why people sometimes dont like diamond is the "finish" of plates, but vitrified diamond stones are sicnificantly better in that, so it stops being an argument. Also i think people misjudge the grits, if one wants to get a mirror (for whatever reason...) with diamond then a much higher grit should be used, due to how well it cuts instead of just burnishes. Ofc its expensive, but why not have like 3 ultra nice efficient stones, compared tons of okish ones and ending up spending the same money. Also to your question: carbide "tearout" doesnt really exist as they are bound way too strong to the steel. But "carbide fatique cracking" does which likely is more common with non diamond sharpening. Basically the carbides cracking due to fatique, and then the non shards falling out.
Yes, I want to see your ceramic whetstone set-up. I'm one of those people who's been nagging you about Shaptons for ages -- mostly because I think they're so much better than the Spyderco and the soaking whetstones. Your response to them was identical to mine when I first jumped in, so it's all very gratifying.
The sharpest knife of my collection over 40 years of ALL types of knives, high and low dollar, is the Sandrin TCK 2.0…..it’s unbelievable….I cannot sharpen or strop a blade after injuries suffered in the service….so its my main goal to get a stellar factory edge….the knife is a slip joint but its fine….and it’s unbelievable…..push cut, swirly cuts, etc…..sharpest factory edge of ALL time….highly recommended….might not be the knife to baton your way out of a helicopter but for 99% of cutting…it’s unbelievable…..highly highly recommended:)
I believe Pete may have covered the TCK a few years ago. If not that specific model, he's definitely had another Sandrin tungsten carbide blade... even sharpened one with diamond plates IIRC.
i'd love to know what specific usb microscope you've got there; because i have something that looks identical (a knock-off?) ~ but it _physically_ can't zoom in that far before losing all ability to focus and then skrunking its lens-protector against the blade.
Try putting some protective tape on the lense protector and holding the edge against it, then focus at that distance. You want to place the object as close to the lens as possible before adjusting zoom. On my cheap USB microscope there are two distinct ranges where it can focus, and the closest one is about a millimeter in front of the protector.
Warning! The freehand sharpening can be excessively addictive 🔪
Thanks for the stone view. I’ve had mixed results with freehand sharpening. I’ll have to keep working on it. 🎸🔪
Props for using an old Chrono Trigger track in the background!
Noticed it as well!

I have heard the same about the purple shapton stone, a lot of people didn't like it for exactly the reasons you listed so you are not alone in that.
Really love that you started making more videos!

Virtuovice is great. He's one of the last original knife channels who's still making videos.
My Convex Hero...lol
Harro... knife people!!
Lol...
Just a thumbs up for the production effort to compare results and editing it all together 👍
That side-by-side sequence of grit progression microscope shots is fantastic.
Love your cat. I appreciate your humor while giving us great content
Loving these videos P!❤😊
Damn, seems like you just started free hand sharpening, but you're already getting amazing results 😲

Yeah I think in terms of price-performance after all the reviews I've seen they're worth it
I've got the Spyderco stones and a black Arkansas. What are some differences of these shaptons?
Came for the knife content, stayed for the Basil scream
So, are the guided systems gathering dust in your garage now? Or do they still have a place in your sharpening rotation?
Intimidating AF Pete. But I will percevere.
today I realized you and I wear the same watch! hell yeah 🙂

I can see myself in the edge !
OK some folks like a mirror edge. It's great to show off at Blade Show or other knife fan gathering.
Good show Pete !
Great job brother!
Animals with ff music always wins
Mirror, mirror on the edge...Who's the fairest... #@*&!! Well---that's going to need super glue and or stitches.
"if you're doing a lot of work on a stone, you can rotate it 180 degrees to even out the wear." Burrfection.
