Wow…I am truly blown away by her voice. This performance brought me to tears. She reminds me of an animated character (NOT in a bad way!) but her features are just so beautifully placed to play a Disney princess. Great review, thank you!
I love how purposeful the changes were in her rendition. They make the emotion more potent in my opinion. But at the same time, they were all very tasteful changes.
Whoever played Ariel in this live-action was always gonna have to be able to really SING. The fact they had fallen in love with her voice and no one was able to give more of what was needed in the audition in terms of vocals and vulnerability as ariel just makes me feel even more protective of her. They said she was the one to beat and no one touched her audition so the casting directors awarded the best actress/singer for the role. She has been at the end of some truly undeserved vile racist attacks for 4 years since she was announced as the one who would be playing Ariel. Then as the movie got closer it just got worse, Ariel's siren voice is magical and is what Ursula wanted from her so an actual vocalist earning the part should have been championed. I love Emma Watson but Belle is auto-tune central in that movie and here we clearly didn't need it on top of Halle acting her butt off she just is Ariel. x x

Halle was invited to audition for the role when the director and producer saw her and her sister sing Where Is The Love on the Grammys in 2018. Halle was judt 18 at the time. She was actually the first woman they saw. She set the bar so high no one ever surpassed her. Rob Marshall said she sang this song for the audition and he was balling at the end.

And as far as how they filmed it, all of the completely underwater scenes like this one were filmed on a soundstage surrounded by blue screen with the characters/actors rigged up on harnesses in the air “simulating” all of the swimming motions. It looked very intricate but really paid off! Oh and Ariel’s (and all of the merpeople’s) hair while in fully underwater scenes is completely CGI. The Visual Effects (VFX) team recreated all of the hair in post production for underwater scenes while the talent work “wig caps” with trackers on them during filming

Halle was perfect and I always knew she would be but she embodied Ariel and o cannot even think of anyone else doing this role. Her hair was cgi, and most of her body, she had to basically act it with puppets and they added everything after so you appreciate her acting even more.
She has locs that we’re dyed and more human hair with different textures were added for the fuller under water look. However under water she wore a cap and everything was CGI’d. Her real hair is only visible above water.

But the distace betweens her eyes is too far for me to make eye contact. She is singing like a black female activist who fights well on behalf of black people. This is why The Black Little Mermaid failed at the box office outside the United States. Many Korean girls cover this song, there is no politics in their performance. Compared to the United States, racial discrimination is not a social problem in Korea. Koreans like flawless, healthy skin. If you look at the murals of Goguryeo established in 37 BC by the former masters of the Korean Peninsula, you can see that women are wearing parasols to protect their skin. At that time, peaple did prefer not thin. These days, peapke prefer not fat. Some Korean want flawless, healthier-looking skin through tanning. Skin color is not a problem in Korea.
