      Kenneth Pettersen Please explain the hidden message which is essentially saying this is wrong. I'm aspergers and this is my special interest. People should realize that either A: everything that doesn't help someone else's life is worthless, or B: that every hobby is ok.

    A couple notes people have mentioned:
    1) A gold split can still happen even if you are behind in your current run - it means you did the best ever for the CURRENT split only. So go for the GLOD!
    2) Be cautious about running your favorite game of all time - it might turn into your least favorite game if you're not careful :P
    3) If you want to know what speedrun a certain clip is from, feel free to ask!
    Also, if you have any questions, ask people in the speedrunning community! Worst case, you don't get an answer, but it never hurts to ask! We're here to help!

    One extra hint that has personally helped me, don't focus on using glitches, bugs, etc. to start. Start running the game at base, and then, when you feel like you've done as well as you CAN do, work on those skips. It really helps you settle in for the long run.

    • @snomangaming
      @snomangaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    A pretty common bit for a lot of games in terms of speedrunning (especially RPGs) is just "don't stop to fight things if you don't have to" since stopping to fight things almost always means you're not moving forward, followed by "build for offense as much as possible when you do have to fight" in games where that's an option since the less time you have to spend standing around fighting something, the more of your time is able to go toward getting further in the game sooner, and in most cases it only matters that you survive at all, not by how much.
    Building for offense is also generally a good way to improve as a player even without speedrunning, since it limits how much leeway you have for staying alive and thus forces you to improve on coping with that aspect.

  • @shootingstar7101

    You should also practice throwing your controller as far as physically possible, like all the big speedrunners do!

    • @shootingstar7101

      In all honesty though, you should probably avoid throwing controllers so recklessly. At the very least, $60 could be going down the drain (Dualshock 4), and $150 at the most (Xbox One Elite Controller). Usually the most I do is swear in frustration, but i'm not really heavy on the whole speedrunning thing as a gamer myself. (I did speedrun Sonic Rush on the Nintendo DS _as a kid_ though...)

    I've started speedrunning NSMBW. One thing I've found is that learning how to deal with autoscrollers if you have to fall back on them after a missed skip is really helpful, and little ways to shave time. I had a run the other day and I died more than ever but still came within 30 seconds of my previous pb. Gave me a ton of motivation to go for sub-35 propellerless%

    I speedrun Guacamelee.
    I was streaming casually when the former WR holder entered my chat and convinced me to run it. And I couldn't ask for a better game to run. It's a blast.
    I was asked a few times how to start speedrunning, so I'm looking forward to show them this video because it explains it better than I ever could.
    I may have something to add here. Make sure to look at the categories of the speedrun. For example, there is a new category in Guacamelee that is faster than anything else. But it has nothing to do with the original game anymore (no fighting, not much platforming and a lot of RNG).
    Speedruns of the same game can differ astronomically depending of their category, so choose wisely. You will play the game this way for hundreds of hours.

    • @snomangaming
      @snomangaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +MelvaCross Yeah categories are very important! I can't believe I forgot to mention it

      Guacamelee! Great game, I bet the speedruns are pretty good too!

    • @MelvaCross
      @MelvaCross 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@musicfriendly12 The Guacamelee Gold edition speedruns are everything I love about speedrunning. The community kind of died after Guac 2 came out, sadly. That INCLUDES the Guac 2 community...
      But that doesn't take away from the amazingness that is the any% 1P1C speedrun.
      The run mostly resembles a normal playthrough of the game. But there are two things that make it special. The Select Door Glitch lets you replace the main menu with the map you are on. It basically lets you teleport to very specific points on the map you performed the glitch on.
      And then there is the Swap Hop. It basically lets you do a pseudo double jump and you can chain multiple Swap Hops to gain height. But the timing is ridiculously tight. Imagine performing dozens of almost frame perfect inputs in a row!
      So the run has clever routing, impressive tech and despite the mastery runners have over the game, the run stays exciting because of how easy it is to die without additional health and a costume that lets you take double the damage.
      AND it still resembles the game. So if you know the game, you can appreciate the run!
      It's really everything I love about speedruns. I'd still be streaming and running this game, if my connection allowed me to.

    I think the only other bits that I think need to be added is that not all games are created equally in terms of speedrunning, and many have different categories. you touched on it a little bit, but bringing up something like, say, OoT which has the sub-20 minute world record massively glitched run, or the marathon all temples run in the same game brings up an interesting point in how even the same game can be done completely differently. Also, a lot of games are average or bad casually, but the speedruns are really intense and interesting, so don't count thigns out before you've done a little bit of interest. Glitches can start making some things super crazy.
    I also say this because I know a lot of runners who like doing things like SMW 96 exit speedruns, but hate doing any% speedruns because the game just isn't as fun in any% for them. Figure out what works best for you and what you have time for. Not everyone can do the 10 hour FFX speedrun whenever they want.
    Also, two additional excellent resources that are available anytime are Speeddemosarchive.com (SDA, the people behind the original games done quick marathons who still host them today) have a verified non-cheating, non-emulated world record of most games (Others of which you can find on youtube, but have to dig a little deeper) and commentary about the video and strats usually on the page of the game as well, to include the varying categories that are recognized. (No, as much as you may want to, 69% DKC is not and will not be a recognized speedrun category... well, maybe it will, but at the moment it's not anyways. :P). Along with SDA, we also have SRL, or speedrunnerslive.com
    Speedrunnerslive.com may be an even more invaluable resource to speedrunning as it allows you to see a lot of other speedrunners, provides livestreams to a HUGE number of speedrunners, and even allows you to race other speedrunners using a simple program. Watching live streams will let you see a lot of runs and how people do things themselves, ask questions about strategy, etc, and the big thing about the races is, no matter how much you may love a certain game, you WILL probably start getting burned out of it at some point, which will make you pick up other games. Being able to join in, say, a megaman X race, or a super mario 64 race with a bunch of peopl is a good way to laugh with a lot of people and see how you're doing. Like any race, sometimes weird things happen, and you may have the current WR holder come in last place due to some massive screw up. You can go tell people you beat caleb at MMX, and just leave out the part where he somehow softlocked the game at armadillo skip. :P

And the only thing i could add onto your tips is to remember to take periodic breaks. Even more so if you have intense sequences. This and all the streamers I have watched has really inspired me to do this. It adds a whole new level of replay-ability and challenge, and there's just something about getting the fastest time and potentially getting your name on the leader boards that I find really exhilarating. I'm finally getting all the products I need to speed run and stream, it can be expensive but overall it's something I really want to do since current online games and stuff just doesn't really cut it for me anymore. That and new games are fun for about a month but speed running can last forever if you have a big desire for it, even if you're done with one game there's plenty more to venture into! I even find learning new games and getting your personal best a blast too!
    And even if you don't achieve the fastest run, who cares? You're still one of the best and you've had fun with it, there's even more to speed running like community races and other great events online. Why people have to hate on speed running is just so pathetic.

    This is an encouraging video. I have lots of admiration for speedrunners, but I doubt 've the nerves for it.
    The only game I'm really interested in doing it for on/off of late is "Final Fantasy 9", since you need to for the Excalibur 2 (reach endgame in under 12 hours). But the thought of missing so much of the game just to get it makes the completionist in me upset (on top of me not having much experience in doing low level runs in general... which is what that entails pretty much).
    And I've tried to follow a 100% completion guide specifically with that item in mind, but it fried my nerves way too much when I attempted it. There's so much to do and perfect in that game/run and so little time... and more importantly, energy.
    I'm aware that a long-play game like that, let alone with completionism in mind, is probably not the best place to start... but man, would it be cool to be able to say I was able to get that weapon AND not miss stuff. Ah well, dunno when/if I'll try that again.

    hey, ive said this before but i cant thank you enough, you were a big part of getting me into speedruns. i watched sethblings minecraft videos when i was into that a while ago, and i saw his smw speedruns and got a little interested. then a few months later i saw this video and i was SO interested, particularly in cosmos run. i watched the video, and then started researching on games to play. i started out trying oot3d but i couldnt get the hang of it. then i tried multiple games and did a few kirby runs (im still doing kirby) but ive recently been working at pokemon blue like crazy! thanks again for being one of 3 to get me into one of my favourite things to do. :)

    I'm speedrunning Tigger's Honey Hunt (N64 emulator) for three months now. I started speedrunning a few months ago, with games I enjoyed playing as a kid. It was just for nostalgia at the beginning. But I quickly became eager to get a world record and I got some.
    My first game and WR was Spider-Man 2 PSP version.
    Some very cool games deserve more people to be interested in speedrunning them.
    If you don't see any runs of your favorite childhood game, then become his speedrunner! It's more fun to speedrun our favorite game than just watching runs about it.

    The amount of time u state is def right, years ago i got into DKC speedrunning (before all the crazy strats) and it took alot of playing to get where i was satisfied (no glitches etc and timed around 1 hr 58 min) and recently got into mgs on ps1 (any% EZ 1hr 28min) i practiced for hrs n hrs, saving in areas i had problems with and making my fiance crazy by replaying the torture scene in mgs (saving meryl). I love the community around speedrunning, alot of them are super helpful n give tips n strats to any who jus ask. Love the vid, n hope to see more ppl getting into the speedrun community

    One of the easiest games to start speedrunning, is Antichamber: It's really fun and you will get satisfactory results in few days. You dont know what Antichamber is? It's a mind=blown genre puzzle game, which seems to be very hard and complicated, and is normaly completed in 2-3 hours of gameplay... after completing in twice normaly, and watching few videos, my fastest time is about 5 minutes.
    Start speedrunning with Antichamber!

    If I was going to try speed running it would be with Super Mario World. I have done a few casual speed run tries. My best time was around 15 minutes or so for a glitch free star road run. Online they list the top 200 fastest runners, and my time falls just outside of the top 100, and is way better than the #200 time. I might not be able to get that top time, but I bet if I practiced a bit I could get in the top 100 for sure.

    I love the Legend of Zelda series. I've played with glitches in Twilight Princess and the Wind Waker and have been watching speedruns for years. However, I don't have access to a console right now since my Wii thought it would be cool to scratch disks. I know emulation is frowned upon in the speedrunning community and you can have random crashes and whatnot, but is, say Dolphin, allowed? No hacks of course!

    • @dreamhillzone8505
      @dreamhillzone8505 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey, I've been looking into possibly running Twilight Princess as well.
      Emulators are generally only acceptable for older consoles, and even then, the emulator has to be accurate. However, the specific rules ultimately depend on the community for the game you're running. That said, it doesn't really matter if you start out on an emulator, as long as you're playing on a console by the time your time starts getting down to competitive levels. I'm playing Twilight Princess on Dolphin (and Minish Cap on VBA-M) until I can get ahold of a Gamecube.

    • @chrisramer3511
      @chrisramer3511 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, when I start officially speedrunning, I'd do it on console obviously. With Dolphin's random crashes and lag, it wouldn't be wise to run in Dolphin even if it was allowed.
      I've been playing TP on Dolphin, practicing 100% of it. The savestates really come in handy for difficult glitches/tricks. Practicing on emulator makes it so much easier. Just have to realize that some things may be different on console.

    There are regular debates in communities about natural talent vs practice, and general consensus tends to be that talent isn’t even the biggest factor. Dedication is far more impactful in the longrun. Simply loving to speedrun and learn about a game in depth is going to make a person a good runner, sooner or later. It’s like school not necessarily being just for smart people.

    how are splits "cued"? Do you hit a button or something to indicate you've reached the end of the split? Because obviously the timer knows nothing about the game process. Someone please clarify this for me, I'm very confused.

    • @BabyJesus1337
      @BabyJesus1337 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Some games actually can be read by the timer but if the game doesn't have that then yes you have to manually press a button yourself indicating a split.

    • @acle_
      @acle_ 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      is it true for most games that they can be "read"? how would that work? do you launch livesplit and then launch the game with livesplit "looking" for the process? do you specify a process for livesplit to monitor?

      that's cool. does that mean that for each game, someone needs to hardcode whatever variables / processes livesplit needs to look for? do you have to download a preset for each game you want to time? thanks for the response.

      Yeah each game has to be able to have the memory read

    Good watch. I just recently finished my first run of super metroid, my first ever completed speedrun. Can't wait to get it down to a decent time and learn a new game. LttP is topping my shortlist atm.

      Be wary; i've heard tales about super metroid being the hardest game to speedrun on SNES.

    Shantae: Risky's revenge and pirate's curse are a blast to speedrun. The games even reward you for finishing fast, you you have incentive to try first few runs.
