The problem in Philippines 🇵🇭 education is more focus on projects and memorization , dapat more in analytical and problem solving…you are lucky if you can have a teacher who really love teaching the children well. I think dep ed should focus to train the teachers of how they can teach effectively to our children especially in the country side public schools!

    1. Philippines is a large developing country. Comparisons to Singapore is just not fair as Singapore's population is only 4% of the Philippines. Singapore is also one of the premier countries in the world with some of the highest human development index.
    2. Not all countries participate in Pisa. So it doesn't mean the Philippines is the lowest of the low in the world just the lowest of the participants. Many other developing countries are absent from the assessment.
    3. Language issues. Most countries take the PISA assessment in their home language while the Philippines uses English which is a second language. This is a massive disadvantage as it means that comprehension is slower for Filipinos. Its harder to answer a question if you don't fully understand it.
    4. Society and economy. Philippines has a bifurcated society in which many of the poor just want to learn enough to be able to work. Those of the upper classes are expected to go to college and become professionals. This is in contrast to developed countries where upward mobility through education is broader and "laborer" jobs are actually more complex. Averaging the scores of the 2 groups is not very informative.
    5. Filipinos tend to learn at a slower pace but many keep learning. The assessment being at 15 years of age works against slow paced learning. It doesn't mean that those Filipinos will not learn those topics eventually - maybe they will later on in college. Filipinos tend to have to take extra schooling for things that in other countries is not necessary like hospitality work. Filipinos also go to college and get bachelors for things that are associates degrees in other countries like nursing, technicians. Law and med school is a doctorate when its a bachelors in many countries.

Another thing is that while our level of English is low and a detrimental factor in terms of our PISA standing. Our level of English is actually fairly high compared to the rest of the world which is one of the reasons Filipinos are competitive in the global job market. Our engineers are not as good as maybe those in Vietnam, but they can communicate better in English.

I think sir. "Improvement will start by accepting our Short Comings" and not by denying or defending it.
We need to humble ourselves and start to work to improve it.
If we continue this kind of behavior, denying and defending. There's no Room for improvement and this kind of Humiliation will continue, year by year.

    • @Basta11
      @Basta11 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@iMG_Stories I don't know who you are lecturing to. No where did I ever defend or deny anything. Simply explaining the limitations of using PISA as a descriptive tool and extrapolating too much out of it.
If you actually read and analyze the PISA reports you will find that PISA rankings correlate negatively with the size of a country and income inequality, and positively with economic development.
Another fact is the unique situation the Philippines is in. We take a test that is not of our home language. Tagalog is just not even an option since its not a first language for most Filipinos either.
We cannot fault ourselves for not speaking English (as a population) as well as those where it is the native and only language like the US, Australia, Canada, etc.
We cannot fault ourselves for not being a highly urbanized city state like Singapore.
A fairer comparison to Singapore would be to just sample those scores from the NCR business districts like Makati, BGC. In that case, the scores will be closer to the OECD average (although Singapore still smokes us).
The PISA is still a useful tool, albeit, not a precise one without deeper analysis. We cannot say for instance that we are at the same educational level as Cambodia or Guatemala just because we score around the same. Their students take the test in their home languages. Our country is much more diverse linguistically, economically, geographically, culturally.
The PISA need much more finer analysis.
      Here's an example of such.
      www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9504801/
Educational attainment is a function of economics and culture. Its not just about oh we need to work harder, study more, or we need to improve. Yeah, no sheet. Those are just empty words.
The question is, how do we improve the economic situation in the Philippines that will provide a platform for families to do better (not just in PISA scores) but in life in general.
Its hard to score well on an exam, in a language you are not good at, when your school is underfunded, you are hungry, the family situation is not great, there is financial stress, crime and poverty all around, lighting at night is bad, no guidance, few resources, and not much is expected out of you since you'll just be a jeepney driver anyway.
All PISA does is tell us we have a lot of poverty which we know already.

@@Basta11 Well i guess i Misunderstood your first Comment sir, Sorry for that. I agree with that, Yes, Environment is also a big factor in Childs mental wellbeing, and Stress and other forms of Challenges will make it harder for them to focus on the task of Learning. Thanks for making it Clear sir.
But i also believe the government funding, Leadership, lack of innovation when it comes to teaching styles, our culture when it comes to Internet ,Social Media, Gaming and other forms of Brain Numbing Entertainments also affects the performance of our students.
As of now Our Government only Spend 3.6% of our GDP to Education Sector which is below the Regional Average of 4.0% , i think underspending in our Education Sector is also a big factor,
We should Spend more resources in Education and make sure that would not end up in the pockets of few individuals.
Another issue i see is the Current Generation is Obsess with Internet, Social Media, TikTok or Whatever..
There is some study about the Bad effects of Social Media and other Addictive apps. Experts says that too much Consumption of Digital Devices or too much Staring in Smartphone Screen makes the Grey Matter of our Brain to Shrink.
Our Country is one of the Top users of Social media in the World..
The average Filipino spend At Least 3 hours a day staring at the SmartPhone and other Devices. According to Study.
I never thought that is a Big deal,
But now it all makes sense to me.

    • @yarilianne
