Isa rin sa mga factors ay yung mga professionals natin na very good supplier ng ating manpower and those high potential carrier ng good quality talented genes ay hindi na nakakapagparami, they tend to focus on their career and alarmingly making family of their own is not their main priority anymore.

Reading comprehension is one thing, but we have to address a more serious but related issue: low IQ.
It is hard to comprehend complex things with a low IQ, let alone have the curiousity that comes with it.

What should we expect from Filipino students when Mr. Perez, President of the Reading Association of Philippines, can't even articulate his perceived difference between "narrative and informational" reading, since he made that distinction. Simply put, reading comprehension is the ability of a student to comprehend/discern information in textual content and answer who/what/when/why and how of what is presented. Mr. Perez should stop making illogical and ridiculous excuse as to why Filipino students ranked dead last, and question the lack of preparation that students face in the current educational system.

    • @cloudsoffire888
      @cloudsoffire888 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I agree with your reasons for educational reform, but the problem isn’t as simple “teach them this and that more”. I think the biggest problem is the socioeconomic division that exists within the Philippines; socioeconomically disadvantaged children have less opportunities than their more affluent counterparts whose parents are able to better cater to their children’s educational needs. Meanwhile, other children are stuck in underfunded schools with 40 students per teacher/classroom and with much limited resources. It gets even worse when you take into account children whose basic needs aren’t even met (a high proportion in the Philippines); how can they possibly dream of attaining high academic success when they can’t even attain basic nutritional needs due to financial limitations? Wealthier children do not have as much similar problems as their burden.

The essay must then show or reflect the student understanding about the article or a chapter from a book they read. Reading teachers should provide constructive comments on the students' papers on how to improve comprehension by correcting erroneous interpretations. You see, I've read numerous articles comparing Philippine educational system to other educational system outside of our country. Let's take Harvard as sole example. They're required to take 4 subjects per semester now compare it to 6 subjects in the Philippines given the amount of hours given for each these subjects. Let's also add the enormous amount of after school works that are given each day to students and the extra-curricular activities. Lessons are purely based on the concepts but not focusing on applying it to real life examples. Most of the lessons are something that you can't even apply in your chosen career track. There's too many faults. The education system is pushing the students to overwork themselves. They most probably forgotten the difference between QUANTITY AND QUALITY. Now going back to Harvard topic, how come this school and other best schools in the entire world even got themselves to ace these international tests given that they only required the students to take such little number of subjects per semester? The answer is already in this comment. Again it's all about QUANTITY and QUALITY. Philippines focus on QUANTITY by giving lots of subjects that aren't even that interesting and not applicable outside of school thus, ending to EXHAUSTED teachers and students. Harvard focus on the QUALITY ensuring that all of its students get the knowledge they need after school life and-
That's why everything about Philippine education is a joke even the approaches are freaking outdated.

agree. sa public schools na kulang na nga mga teachers, ipupull out pa nila for extra curricular activities, magreport dito doon, activities that are not directly connected to teaching. ang daming ineexpect from the teachers na nauubusan na ng oras to focus on the classroom activities for the learners.
another thing, ewan ko lang kung di ko rin lang masyado naintindihan itong issue sa result ng research...ano ba talaga ang kulang sa atin? hirap ba bumasa? or marunong bumasa pero di naiintindahan ang binasa? kasi from what i understood from his explanation, comprehension ang kulang. but then again, paano ka makakarating sa comprehension when you cant even decode. Dito sa amin medyo may problema pa sa decoding ang ibang learners, lagging behind their grade level. im interested to know, how deped is addressing this in the classroom level. ewan ko kung tama itong isa suggest ko, pero baka damat nang bawasan ang load ng trabaho ng mga teachers when it comes to extra work. bawasan muna yang mga pa sports sports fest na labanan outside school so they can focus more on classroom activities. Isa pa napapansin ko din sa mga learning programs natin, they arr designed to cater for those learners who are already advanced for their level which is what? approximately just around 10% or less of the learners population. paano na lang yun remaining 90% lalong lalo na yun medyo below average ang performance? imbes na magfocus tayo dun sa mga kulelat and make remedial programs for them...mas lalo tuloy gumagawa ng advance classes para sa fast learners. lalong naiiwan yun kulelat. madalas kasi yun mentality natin is that pag mababa grades mo, automatic tamad ka. we fail to realize na baka may learning disconnect sa utak nun tao. maybe that learner needs a person to guide him one on one, step by step hanggang makasabay with the rest. pero dahil nga overloadef na sa work and reportd mga teacher na papa dutyhin pa sa canteen... hindi na magawang iaanalyze ang needs ng bawat learner, resorting to a generalized system that does not benefit everyone.

DepEd and their band-aid solutions because they want immediate results. I disagree that students having more used to narrative texts is the cause of low reading comprehension for 'informational text'. Being exposed to a variety of materials helps, but it should still boost your comprehension IF it's practiced constantly. And don't confuse constantly with more requirements! I doubt students are even immersed in narrative texts. The problem is that there's so much work to do, there's not enough time to prepare and process things. Back in JHS, I remember only understanding 1-2 chapters of Noli because it was my report, where each chapter was assigned to a student. Imagine, I had to rely on my classmates' summaries just to understand the whole story, which I honestly didn't. It was so disjointed, I just memorized random facts that might be asked on our quizzes and exam. If it wasn't for my curiosity and love for literature, I wouldn't be interested in reading the novel on my own (still not finished tho). They should encourage students to build a habit of reading, instead of bombarding them with schoolwork and demanding instant outputs 🤦‍♀ What's sad is we're not only underutilizing our English skills, but the lack of refinement also propagates misinformation ;-; But that's a whole nother topic.

How can you begin to teach English literacy when 2/3 of the population are Filipino illiterate. If someone asks to do basic maths in Filipino, no one can do it without using English buzz words due to being more convenient and less mind straining. Filipino adults have paved the way of ‘taking the most easy way’ mentality and let it run amok in growing children. Mediocrity and laziness becomes the new norm in the classroom; and children would rather just look at the answer rather than think about it first. How can you improve on that when the parents of these children have the same mentality? Basically, education in the Philippines has thrived in lazy mentality because we don’t punish mediocrity. Discipline in and away from the home must be established because it’s useless for schools to teach discipline when there’s no discipline at home. Filipinos need to change the mentality that adults and elderly should not be re-educated because they certainly should if you want more disciplined Filipinos.

Paano sila makikipag-ugnayan at makikipagtalastasan?
Ano ang masasabi mo sa ulat na ito: "Estimates vary but about 300 million Chinese-nearly as many people as there are in the U.S.-are English language learners, according to Chinese media reports. The industry is worth RMB30 billion (US$5 billion)."
In 2012-13, a number of leading universities are offering
undergraduate medicine and surgery programmes taught in English for international students, including Fudan University in Shanghai, Nanjing Medical University, Nantong University, Sichuan University, Soochow University and Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, with a reported enrolment of more than 5,000 international medical students (many of whom are from South Asia) studying through English
across the country (CUCAS, 2012).
"According to Kyodo News, many Japanese corporations, in a bid to globalize, are now starting to send their staff to the Philippines, where English is an official language, to hone their English skills.
“We used to send our employees to the United States, but school expenses and living costs are high,” said Yasutaka Iio, a personnel division manager at Mitsuba Corp., an auto parts manufacturer based in Gunma Prefecture.
As it expanded production bases overseas, Mitsuba is requiring its employees to learn English, sending dozens of its personnel to the Philippines every year for a study program lasting for three months.
