One thing you might wish to try in Solo is "Nasi Liwet". But look for the street version, that's the best. Still can't find a restaurant version of it that's as delicious.
"people smoking cigarettes" - yeah that's a serious problem in Indonesia that you won't encounter in other countries ; I have asthma, and cigarette smokes will cause me to have problem breathing pretty quickly. The main reason why I can't enjoy street food more often, in many cases I had to have them as takeaway, instead of risking me having asthma attack.

Fun Fact, in Java island alone we have varieties of Serabi, Javanese style (the one you ate), Sundanese or Bandung Style called Surabi you eat it with a sweet dipping sauce made from palm sugar and jackfruit or durian, and Cirebonese style when it is more to the savory side and usually eat with fried tempe... have a nice trip Luke!
Come to Indonesia bro, you will love it. Indonesia is Paradise for food we have more than 6000 food variety.. Not like western fast food, we had everything here.
Here in the Philippines we also love sweet potato leaves. But we usually have it as an appetizer with shrimp paste. Pretty cool Indonesia and Philippines are quite alike. Goat here is also kambing. We also have bistek here in the Philippines but it's a savory thick beef stew made with white onions and garlic. But first marinated in soy sauce and calamansi(lime) before cooking it.
6:44 those triangle things I think aren't tempe. I think it's gembus, a tempeh-like cake made from leftover tofu residue. It's soft, a bit tasteless because it's a residue, but great as flavor vehicle.

To be honest, I'm a native Indonesian, but I've never tried the first dish, and my recommendation is that you should try Nasi Uduk, it's really delicious.
During colonial times, palm sugar in abundance. The locals ended up using them for cooking. Thats the main reason why the food in java is mainly sweet. The combination sweet and spicy is very common. Tho there are a few good javanese dishes, i prefer sundanese cuisine(west java). But sumatran cuisine is still my favorite. Lombok and sulawesi(manado/makassar) right after.

I don't always like what you eat but one thing I'd like to say is that I'm able to travel around the world watching channels like yours. For people who are looking to travel to certain countries that are able to see if that's a country they would like to visit or not. They get an idea of the kind of cuisine they would be eating and the sites they would be seeing. Also things about the culture or the customs is important. Too many westerners go traveling around to different countries and the same issue happens everywhere, disrespectful behavior and disrespecting the customs or the religion. They don't obey or respect the customs of other people even though they are a guest there. Western money is not so important that a person should forget their manners. I know the United States has a bad reputation for doing this and I personally have witnessed bad behavior like that while traveling myself. Although I may never travel anywhere outside of the US again I can pretend that I am, so thanks.
That warung dawet has been already openned there for more than 50years, and still there at exactly the same place... I think now the seller is the fourth generation. Amazing... ❤👍

Welcome to my hometown Luke. That market has been there for ages and everyone stay at same spot for years. One of my fave market with amazing food and snacks in it. U missed thr gempol pleret in the entrance when u got in, its also very unique and nice. And timlo solo.
