This game looks amazing in an original Vive even at the lowest settings...no aliasing, and hell I don’t even pick up on the screen door effect. It comes down to being almost unbelievable how much better it looks than most other VR games (and it performs amazing too...I can run highest settings on a 6700k and 1080ti and still have headroom), the world is SO tangible and consistent. It seems to have that AAA polish no matter what VR system you use which also speaks to the effort and time taken to get it right.
No you don't need a super powerful PC, if you got the windows mixed reality head sets. They can run on much lower hardware, and the experience is still going to be good.
vr headsets are a big investment but the payoff is huge, vr is an amazing and incredibly fun experience. for most saving, up for a vr headset is more than doable, my headset was $150, which is less than a normal weeks pay for me (and i only work at dunkin donuts)
idk I always liked playing as my gender in games, for some reason playing as a character of the opposite gender throws me off, but I don't hate playing as female characters.

Climbing ladders isn't even bad. You can climb them manually or just pull yourself up once and let go and it will basically teleport you to the top I've seen a few people play through the game unaware of this and accidentally teleporting themselves up and thinking the game is just "freaking out".
At one point I opened up a locker and it was just FILLED with toilet paper and I burst out laughing. Gotta wonder if one of the devs went in last minute to add the excessive amounts of tp rolls to the game as a gag
I finished it already, I played for 7 hours straight today. The entire thing is worth it! If you're a Half Life fan and you can't afford buying a VR headset look into rentals! This turned the whole series upside down

@@toddhoward1133 I built a pc based on this game's recommended specs for around $1k, but you can build a low spec one for maybe around $400. The only parts you really need are the cpu and gpu. If you don't know about pc building but want to, watch bitwit and JaysTwoCents. They taught me everything about pc building in 2 days, and before I knew absolutley nothing. ^~^ I also advise to get a quest if you can, I played this game with oculus link and it's just as good, plus the quest is fun by itself otherwise~

My cousin and me are fans of HalfLife we were teens when the first one came out, right now we are thinking of buying a vr kit between him and me just to play this game, sadly with all the world stuff and some jobs laying off and being a responsible adults, we need to keep our finances safe
Yes maybe wait a while, the game is not going anywhere. And you will find a headset to suit your budget, there are price points for everyone. But for now look after yourselves, and when you can buy it, it will be cheaper so win win.

Yes, in the middle to later parts, where there isn't as much story but more fighting and puzzles, he did get annoying for me too, but the highlights of the game are SOOO good in this Playthrough BECAUSE he is so energetic. His reaction to (minor spoiler) some memorable scenes and especially Jeff where fantastic (at least in my opinion) and he never talked over anything important for the story as well. I know, everybody has their own taste, but I at least prefer a person who reacts to things going on in the game than people just standing there and playing the game without the slightest sign of enjoyment
I know hating on IGN is the norm but their HL: A review was very well done. Dan Stapleton is very well respected in the games industry and his reviews are top-notch. Obviously never rely on single reviews to make a purchase decision, the more the merrier.
For your stories of the month vid this month, I would suggest mentioning that a group of Minecraft players are planning to build the entire earth 1:1 scale with buildings
They did build earth to 1:1 scale (as a planet). The building part isn't finished yet, but I believe that in a decade or 2 it will be done (if enough players help).
PaSta they already have a mod that makes the terrain, and they’re not planning to do it all by themselves, they’re asking anyone who wants to help. The only real problem is file size
This game is definitely part of the Half Life series, I got goosebumps being in the story and learning what happened before Half Life 2. As a VR game it is one of the best. I've found that usually with games that provide movement in the virtual world (not standing still) I had a bad habit of moving in real life and bumping into things. Like said in the video, having limited space isn't an issue with this game. So far I think I'm almost done with the game and I'm sad to see it end. Half Life is one of the only games where I've gotten deep into the story and If you haven't played the first two you HAVE TO to fully understand what is going on with the story here. The only thing I wonder is if it's worth $60. The story is long and leaves me wanting more but I'm happy that even if it's not the end of the series, we have more info on Half Life and Vavle's long pause of waiting for a new REAL game since Portal 2 is finally over.
Yes I wondered about the price, but I think valve did not scrimp on this game. They went all out and made the best game they could, which must have cost quite a bit of money. They know that while VR is beginning to hit it's stride, still it's some way off for being mainstream. Not many people, well certainly before the game had headsets. Though I wonder how many people this prompted to get a headset for the game, so I think they were trying to mitigate financial losses from the sale of the game. And if you already had or bought the Valve Index, you got the game for free. So we probably paid a bit for that, I paid 46gbp and I think it was worth it.
This game is worth the $2000+ for the pc + headset. Its that good, and helps you future proof for the upcoming AAA games coming out this year. Especially since half the world is stuck at home. Valve gave us, at the perfect time, an escape from IRL.
The 2 apartment thing is more of 'in the progress of moving to a different city' kind of thing. So now I have to pay double rent because of this quarantine situation which obviously is not ideal.
One of my favorite moments in the game was when I was in the area in the subway with a bunch of grenades. Since the most you can hold is 4, I ended up grabbing a box and threw a bunch of grenades in it and walked around just picking up grenades and throwing them at every enemy. Perfect example of how easily you can get creative in the game
I'm a super huge VR dude and absolutely loved boneworks and I one of my adult friends got pissed that I loved boneworks for it's originality when he thought it was ripping off half life which I never played. Well half life Alyx was announced and I thought it looked neat but never gave it any attention until last week when in quarantine I played both half life's and then pre ordered Alyx and WOW. Kinda wished I played this series earlier.

Only fun in big spaces? What? I literally played seated the entire game. There is a dedicated crouch button to help with that and you have the gravity gloves to grab stuff of the floor. I didn't had any issues and it was still fun

Cerberusarms playthrough is really good he actually immerses you with his game play and commentary, instead ofv just yelling and saying dumb shit like pew, ack or many other youtuber uploading vids on it
There is! And I played from start to finish using it. I had little to no issue except where some item placements like hackable tripmines were placed very much with a right handed person in mind which can make it a tad awkward. Nothing gamebreaking though. And a masterpiece through and through :D
they ask all the preference before start and you can switch all option anytime. really really smooth and you know this game is from valve not those garbage cash grabing gross corp like EA or UB soft whatever other big names
I saved up and bought an Index for this and boneworks and I am so glad I did. It really is an amazing experience to play. I haven't felt this sense of wonder while playing a game in several years. It's really hard to imagine the game not in VR. It's also hard to imagine getting excited about non VR games. Sure Vr has some challenges but the experience it gives can't be replicated in non VR.
Most my friend, myself included, stream VR games, Half Life Alyx has been getting stream by almost off of them, and i gotta say, we've all been loving it, especially the moments of horror. truth be told, if you want to get into VR, this game really pushes it to why VR will continue to be a thing, the story, mechanics, dialog, and scenarios are amazing. Boneworks was good, but Alyx takes what a VR can be and pushes it further, and shows how it should be, not just compatible with most headsets too, how mechnics can be, but how a VR game can have a flushed out stroy, and be an amazing experience
I finished HLA yesterday and I wholly agree with everything he's said in the video. This is an AMAZING VR game with refined features... as well as some fun half life lore secrets sprinkled in for veterans!
I just finished it. Its probably the best game of the year for me... I believe that it had to be VR exclusive. The moment you get the flashlight and the boss fight at the end are the best experiences i had in a VR headset so far!
Jeff was by far my favorite experience in VR I’ve ever had. I’ll refrain from spoiling what happens, but if you know you know. I can’t express enough how amazing that sequence was.
If you're thinking about getting into it, I heavily recommend the game Black Mesa, it's a complete remake of Half-Life 1 but better in every way (except that you know, it's not the original game), they truly did that game justice and it looks absolutely gorgeous.

Have a Quest, and my fiend is coming over to play the whole weekend. Best part is to play whit virtual desktop! So no wiers connected to the headset! Almost destroyed my TV though xD
Yes just like it's scard man said. Whit 5g and a computer directly connected to the stationary router I have noticed almost zero lag. Except some of the bigger cut scenes. But pros and cons and so far the con (no wires is wort it!)
Actually its far exceeded my expectations. So far that I''ve ordered 40ft extension DP cable to move it to my new dedicated VR room. Not sure if I'm alone here, I really want HL3 or whatever to be in VR as well. All 3 Half Lives solved different technical issues as Lord Gaben mention in latest interview. He meant it.
I'm using an Oculus Quest and running an i7 8700 with RTX SUPER 2060, 16 GB RAM, and official Oculus Link cable with 2Gbps connection speed, enough power to charge. I have had NO complaints about how Half Life Alyx runs with this setup. Granted I would have preferred an Oculus Rift S to play, but none were in stock when I was interested in purchasing, so I got a Quest (Rift S is in stock right now as of this writing). I did have a problem trying to record the spectator screen with OBS while playing with the Quest, though - there was noticeable stutter.
It's crazy how subdued the fanfare for this release is. I'm certain VR has a lot to do with that, but for what is essentially the HL3 everybody has been obsessing over for years, you'd expect the internet to have broken over its release. Looks awesome though, glad it doesn't feel like a glorified tech demo.
I think the fanfare is there, but it’s just a lot more specified in areas of the internet now. Back when Half Life 3 was a meme almost everyone knew about it and anticipated hype for a sequel of any kind, but now that it’s been so many years, it’s segmented. So you can find the hype if you go to Half Life forums and subreddits, but on a huge scale it’s not going to be there. That’s just the way of the internet now.
Probably because this isn't HL3, it's just a side story that takes place before HL2, not to say it's bad, it's just not what all the diehard fans have been asking for. When HL3 finally releases, that will break the internet.

You dont need an index. As he said in the video, hes using an oculus quest with a link cable and it runs perfectly. And the oculus quest is 1/3 of the price of the index.
I spent the last 2 days in 8 hour sessions playing this game, and I am completely blown away. A jaw dropping ride all the way through, and the game managed to subvert my expectations for what VR is capable of again and again. The platform allows you to really be in the world and interact in ways you just can’t do with mouse and keyboard, like shoving a city scanner out of your face, or drawing a mustache on the people in a TV with a dry erase marker. The characters and environments really pull you into the world, and the ending (no spoilers) left me screaming and so excited for what’s to come next! I got a Rift S after Alyx was announced to play this along with boneworks, and I’ve gotten to play many fun VR games along the way. This game alone made everything worth it for me, and I can’t wait to get friends over to try it!
I’ve been watching jacksepticeye’s let’s play, I love how he gushes over the environment and not just walk through it like some people do, he appreciates what Valves doing for the VR community
Yea little bit loud and over the top, but he does explain lighting and specular maps and such. He just likes to give people a good time viewing, so I turn down my volume and it's all good.

From what i heard. Stress Level Zero (Boneworks, Duck Season creator) partnered with Valve to revolutionise VR gaming. By using Valve Source engine and in return, they shared VR Modification API to Valve.
One thing that I love about the game is that if you pick up a pressurized propane tank and shake it, it sounds like a real one with the propane sloshing around and such in the tank. Loved it.
Hearing from Jake that this new half-life game is good is really refreshing! I haven’t played a half-life game so I didn’t know if I needed to know the story, but hearing Jake just go on about how amazing the game just makes me want to buy it more!
I’m an experienced VR player, and this is the first time I have said this for a VR game, but it literally scares the crap out of me. The flipping northstar hotel sequence is just straight up terrifying.
I have never played a half life game in my life, but recently i started playing the first half life. I absolutely love it and i wish i had a headset to play this game. I really hope that I can play this game soon.
Between this and Artifacts relaunch, I am super happy that Valve ain't sitting on International and CS:GO sheckels and actually do stuff as a developer again.

This review has actually got me wanting to get a vr set up. I've always had an issue with how laggy the other vr games are or have been....hopefully 2020 is the year for good vr and sway the rest of us like me

I got Half Life: Alyx with my Index, which I picked up last October in hype for Boneworks. Which felt a lot like a tech demo. It wasn't too immersive and had rather annoying bugs that left it feeling unfnished. Half life alyx on the other hand revived my love for VR. It's the best game I've played in years, including non-VR titles. It's so immersive I constantly find myself moving in my roomscale setup rather than in game because of the amount I panic when in combine gunfights. They tend to be short, but fast paced. Terrifying to the point that I momentarily forget I'm in VR, forget how to load my guns and drop ammo all over the ground, or run into walls (like a physical wall in my roomscale setup :/ never said I'm smart). I love this game and I really wish more people could experience what it has to offer. It's the perfect mix of horror, action, and story-telling. Although I have yet to complete the story, I'm very impressed by Valve's work. I wouldn't expect anything less from them.
Ya, no. The ps4 won't run it. The psvr headset is low res and this would look like shit. And finally, the move controllers are absolute garbage compared to the index.

I love the game. I'm soon in the last third of the game and oh man, it's an experience. I've been in VR since original Vive was launched and doing it even as my day job now as a VR dev. This game alone pushes the medium forward and shows what really can be done with VR. Everything feels so polished and smooth here. It feels amazing to play, amazing to interact with things, gunplay is great and all weapons feel unique and different. The atmosphere is phenomenal and keeps you on your toes the whole time. You can find creative ways to tackle conflicts. For example I was throwing 6 granades one by one in front of me and cleared a big fight with Combine without using a single bullet. It took me a lot of time, a lot of throwing but man it paid off big time :D GET IT!
Have the Rift CV1 and bought the game but not feeling 100%, not Covid-19 thank god just a normal cold with a mad runny nose! I had a quick try and It does look pretty amazing. I used to get really bad motion sickness but tried 10 mins with the normal joystick movement and felt ok. You know when go get something that you just don't want to start and just treasure it?.....
I was so glad that Valve had made it work perfectly with the CV1. That's the headset I have and I'm super glad that I can enjoy Alyx to its full potential.

My cpu is one gen undert the minimum specs, my gpu is a 1070 (min is a 1060) the game runs perfectly.

I know hating on IGN is the norm but their HL: A review was very well done. Dan Stapleton is very well respected in the games industry and his reviews are top-notch. Obviously never rely on single reviews to make a purchase decision, the more the merrier.

They did build earth to 1:1 scale (as a planet). The building part isn't finished yet, but I believe that in a decade or 2 it will be done (if enough players help).

This game is definitely part of the Half Life series, I got goosebumps being in the story and learning what happened before Half Life 2. As a VR game it is one of the best. I've found that usually with games that provide movement in the virtual world (not standing still) I had a bad habit of moving in real life and bumping into things. Like said in the video, having limited space isn't an issue with this game. So far I think I'm almost done with the game and I'm sad to see it end. Half Life is one of the only games where I've gotten deep into the story and If you haven't played the first two you HAVE TO to fully understand what is going on with the story here. The only thing I wonder is if it's worth $60. The story is long and leaves me wanting more but I'm happy that even if it's not the end of the series, we have more info on Half Life and Vavle's long pause of waiting for a new REAL game since Portal 2 is finally over.
Yes I wondered about the price, but I think valve did not scrimp on this game. They went all out and made the best game they could, which must have cost quite a bit of money. They know that while VR is beginning to hit it's stride, still it's some way off for being mainstream. Not many people, well certainly before the game had headsets. Though I wonder how many people this prompted to get a headset for the game, so I think they were trying to mitigate financial losses from the sale of the game. And if you already had or bought the Valve Index, you got the game for free. So we probably paid a bit for that, I paid 46gbp and I think it was worth it.

This game is worth the $2000+ for the pc + headset. Its that good, and helps you future proof for the upcoming AAA games coming out this year. Especially since half the world is stuck at home. Valve gave us, at the perfect time, an escape from IRL.

One of my favorite moments in the game was when I was in the area in the subway with a bunch of grenades. Since the most you can hold is 4, I ended up grabbing a box and threw a bunch of grenades in it and walked around just picking up grenades and throwing them at every enemy. Perfect example of how easily you can get creative in the game
I'm a super huge VR dude and absolutely loved boneworks and I one of my adult friends got pissed that I loved boneworks for it's originality when he thought it was ripping off half life which I never played. Well half life Alyx was announced and I thought it looked neat but never gave it any attention until last week when in quarantine I played both half life's and then pre ordered Alyx and WOW. Kinda wished I played this series earlier.

Only fun in big spaces? What? I literally played seated the entire game. There is a dedicated crouch button to help with that and you have the gravity gloves to grab stuff of the floor. I didn't had any issues and it was still fun
Same, the only issue I have with the game so far is that the turning is snap only with no seamless turning option but I have gotten used to it

There is! And I played from start to finish using it. I had little to no issue except where some item placements like hackable tripmines were placed very much with a right handed person in mind which can make it a tad awkward. Nothing gamebreaking though. And a masterpiece through and through :D

I saved up and bought an Index for this and boneworks and I am so glad I did. It really is an amazing experience to play. I haven't felt this sense of wonder while playing a game in several years. It's really hard to imagine the game not in VR. It's also hard to imagine getting excited about non VR games. Sure Vr has some challenges but the experience it gives can't be replicated in non VR.
Easily worth the cost of a head set. straight up masterpiece.

Most my friend, myself included, stream VR games, Half Life Alyx has been getting stream by almost off of them, and i gotta say, we've all been loving it, especially the moments of horror. truth be told, if you want to get into VR, this game really pushes it to why VR will continue to be a thing, the story, mechanics, dialog, and scenarios are amazing. Boneworks was good, but Alyx takes what a VR can be and pushes it further, and shows how it should be, not just compatible with most headsets too, how mechnics can be, but how a VR game can have a flushed out stroy, and be an amazing experience

If you're thinking about getting into it, I heavily recommend the game Black Mesa, it's a complete remake of Half-Life 1 but better in every way (except that you know, it's not the original game), they truly did that game justice and it looks absolutely gorgeous.

Yes just like it's scard man said. Whit 5g and a computer directly connected to the stationary router I have noticed almost zero lag. Except some of the bigger cut scenes. But pros and cons and so far the con (no wires is wort it!)

Actually its far exceeded my expectations. So far that I''ve ordered 40ft extension DP cable to move it to my new dedicated VR room. Not sure if I'm alone here, I really want HL3 or whatever to be in VR as well. All 3 Half Lives solved different technical issues as Lord Gaben mention in latest interview. He meant it.

I'm using an Oculus Quest and running an i7 8700 with RTX SUPER 2060, 16 GB RAM, and official Oculus Link cable with 2Gbps connection speed, enough power to charge. I have had NO complaints about how Half Life Alyx runs with this setup. Granted I would have preferred an Oculus Rift S to play, but none were in stock when I was interested in purchasing, so I got a Quest (Rift S is in stock right now as of this writing). I did have a problem trying to record the spectator screen with OBS while playing with the Quest, though - there was noticeable stutter.
When they get around to making HL3 i hope they have normal PC gameplay but support VR in the style of Alyx

It's crazy how subdued the fanfare for this release is. I'm certain VR has a lot to do with that, but for what is essentially the HL3 everybody has been obsessing over for years, you'd expect the internet to have broken over its release.

I think the fanfare is there, but it’s just a lot more specified in areas of the internet now. Back when Half Life 3 was a meme almost everyone knew about it and anticipated hype for a sequel of any kind, but now that it’s been so many years, it’s segmented.
So you can find the hype if you go to Half Life forums and subreddits, but on a huge scale it’s not going to be there. That’s just the way of the internet now.

You dont need an index. As he said in the video, hes using an oculus quest with a link cable and it runs perfectly. And the oculus quest is 1/3 of the price of the index.

I spent the last 2 days in 8 hour sessions playing this game, and I am completely blown away. A jaw dropping ride all the way through, and the game managed to subvert my expectations for what VR is capable of again and again. The platform allows you to really be in the world and interact in ways you just can’t do with mouse and keyboard, like shoving a city scanner out of your face, or drawing a mustache on the people in a TV with a dry erase marker. The characters and environments really pull you into the world, and the ending (no spoilers) left me screaming and so excited for what’s to come next! I got a Rift S after Alyx was announced to play this along with boneworks, and I’ve gotten to play many fun VR games along the way. This game alone made everything worth it for me, and I can’t wait to get friends over to try it!
I’ve been watching jacksepticeye’s let’s play, I love how he gushes over the environment and not just walk through it like some people do, he appreciates what Valves doing for the VR community
Yea little bit loud and over the top, but he does explain lighting and specular maps and such. He just likes to give people a good time viewing, so I turn down my volume and it's all good.

From what i heard. Stress Level Zero (Boneworks, Duck Season creator) partnered with Valve to revolutionise VR gaming. By using Valve Source engine and in return, they shared VR Modification API to Valve.

I have never played a half life game in my life, but recently i started playing the first half life. I absolutely love it and i wish i had a headset to play this game. I really hope that I can play this game soon.

Since you have to motion your hand upwards to pull out the pistol you can instantly hold it up James Bond style and it feels awesome.

You can set out to teleport movement and that takes care of motion sickness.
My PC is crap and I don't have the money to buy a vr headset but I was still VERY excited about this game. I found the Half-Life series a few years back and I just loved the characters and lore but I would've NEVER thought Valve would make a new HALF-LIFE game EVER and now here I am! It's honestly crazy, I hope I could play this game somehow in the future because it looks absolute BONKERS !!

I got Half Life: Alyx with my Index, which I picked up last October in hype for Boneworks. Which felt a lot like a tech demo. It wasn't too immersive and had rather annoying bugs that left it feeling unfnished. Half life alyx on the other hand revived my love for VR. It's the best game I've played in years, including non-VR titles. It's so immersive I constantly find myself moving in my roomscale setup rather than in game because of the amount I panic when in combine gunfights. They tend to be short, but fast paced. Terrifying to the point that I momentarily forget I'm in VR, forget how to load my guns and drop ammo all over the ground, or run into walls (like a physical wall in my roomscale setup :/ never said I'm smart). I love this game and I really wish more people could experience what it has to offer. It's the perfect mix of horror, action, and story-telling. Although I have yet to complete the story, I'm very impressed by Valve's work. I wouldn't expect anything less from them.
I really hope that they port it over to PSVR.

I love the game. I'm soon in the last third of the game and oh man, it's an experience. I've been in VR since original Vive was launched and doing it even as my day job now as a VR dev. This game alone pushes the medium forward and shows what really can be done with VR. Everything feels so polished and smooth here. It feels amazing to play, amazing to interact with things, gunplay is great and all weapons feel unique and different. The atmosphere is phenomenal and keeps you on your toes the whole time. You can find creative ways to tackle conflicts. For example I was throwing 6 granades one by one in front of me and cleared a big fight with Combine without using a single bullet. It took me a lot of time, a lot of throwing but man it paid off big time :D GET IT!
Well now I know what I'll be spending my tax return money on now.

Have the Rift CV1 and bought the game but not feeling 100%, not Covid-19 thank god just a normal cold with a mad runny nose! I had a quick try and It does look pretty amazing. I used to get really bad motion sickness but tried 10 mins with the normal joystick movement and felt ok.
