Mix A is absolutely Glenn's mix. Not only does it sound miles better,, but there's his trademark "shit ton of reverb on the snare" technique that totally makes his signature sound.

It's funny, because in more traditional pop, it works wonders as well :) You can have a loud, dry and punchy kick, and a 50% wet snare, and wetter toms - provided the latter is only here and there.

I'll go with mix A: it's a bit more rough on the cymbals but it sounds more full and modern. The fact that its volume is higher doesn't help in a fair comparison.

Hah yea mix A is definitely SSS, i can't imagine Glenn being so pleased himself with the sound of the mix B kick, but both sounded really good for 60 minutes to setup, record and mix... and i imagine Glenn has vastly more experience in making quick decisions about a mix. Thanks guys, love to Lewitt and SSS

You can clearly hear how dead Mix B is when you directly listen from the End of A to the beginning of B. Not only the drums are more alive, but also the rest of the band. Track B is so muffled down, 'it's dead Jim'.

Both mixes work, for sure. Mix A has more energy, but it almost sounds a bit too crushed/hyped, whereas B sounded like it was a little too safe, not quite energetic enough, but overall tone I did prefer B. Cool video though, would love to see more like this! Maybe something with Shure?

What a fun challenge! Great to watch such vastly different perspectives. Wow! More than a touch of jealousy at the room you got to work in as well as having carte blanche of all those amazing Lewitt mics.
Of the two mixes, mIx A just has more oomph, and definitely feels like Glenn's signature mix tropes are all over it. I'm just a sucker for how Glenn crushes the drum sound.
Also, as a Reaper user, it was great to see Glenn just record the drums and then take the stems to his laptop and do his thing.

Mix A is louder and more compressed(i think), and i find the snare a few dbs too loud for my taste. Mix B is the opposite, and as others noted, a bit too safe. I would prefer something in between of the 2. That beeing said, i lean more towards mix A because it conveys more excitement.Regardless, that is a top video! Looking forward to the next one!🤘

To my ears, there is a pretty huge volume difference between mix A and B, with A being the loudest. It makes it a little more difficult to not fall for the "loud is better" thing, but having jumped back and forth while adjusting the volume I'd still say mix A sounds bigger and more hard hitting. That being said, both mixes done in an hour is pretty incredible.

I don't dig the mixes, but mix a sounds better overall, so i would guess it is Glenn's. Mix A is a lot louder (and pumpier), bass also overpowers mix b a bit at times. Would have been easier to "judge" if both mixes were on the same level. Mix b's drums are kinda buried. But for just one hour to do everything this is pretty cool!

A is my preference. A feels much more present, though still a bit mushy in the lower-midrange. B has nice separation in the overheads - maybe to a fault, but lacks punch in both the snare and kick. Cymbals don't cut enough in either mix, and I would have put the drums more forward overall in the mix for this demo.

There is something about the bass drum EQ that I like, in B although I feel like it is more in post. Other than the China being a little washy, everything else sounds there. Really nice... Wonder how much of that is the room mic mixed in. Dunno. Wonder if we'll get a video recounting the options Glenn chose for the speedy mix. What a fun challenge.

I’m going with Mix A as the SMG mix. The cymbal volume sounds a lot more like Glen’s mixes that Mix B.
Mix B is Lewitt’s mix; they kept the overhead volume low to try and ensure clarity of the close mics, but for the genre, the overheads sound a bit soft (to my ear).

i enjoy both for different reasons. the kick in mix B is more punchy and has more weight. mix A's snare is perfect though. more cymbal definition in mix A though. mix A feels like a finished product though, but if we took the kick sound from mix B and put it into mix A it would be *chef kiss*

Wow. this is great! Listened to both mixes several times.
Mix A sounds the loudest and most open to me. There is more top end, but there is a weird phase issue going on with the hi-hat / cymbals in the center? Sounds like they could've been panned more to one side. It sounds a little "harsh" to me.
Mix B is more subdued, but definitely cleaner. The spread on the drums is better and sounds a lot cleaner. I think it's just missing some high end sparkle to make it shine and this would easily be the winner.
I'm leaning more towards Mix A. Just barely though!!

Adjusted for loudness difference, I preferred Mix B. "A" stylistically might be a better overall song fit. For me Mix A had some unpleasant stuff occurring with the upper bass/low mid transients along with the overly present cymbals. Both have something slightly odd going on with the cymbal attack & release in parts of the mix. Enjoyed the panning of the toms more in Mix B.
    Anyway, time constraints; nice shootout.

You can definitely hear how close the overheads were on mix A, that’s got to be Glenn’s. Overall it’s the more satisfying mix, but man that kick is clicky and the snare too even. Mix B was much more natural sounding, and the snare sounded way better, but those overheads need to come up in the mix for sure. A happy medium between the two mixes would be perfect, but if I had to pick one I’d probably go with A.

    Two things.
First: I'm pretty sure Mix A is from Glenn's team.

But it's not the reason I think it's Glenn's doing.
I've listened to Glenn's work for a while, but a lot of his drum mixing he did recently. And Mix A sounds (at least to me), close to what I heard from him in his recent drum videos.

Strong preference for Mix A. Didn't listen on headphones, had some Neumann KH120 monitors in front of me instead, haha. Kick and snare punched through well, whereas they felt a bit buried in the other one. Mix B was less crispy and felt less defined overall, but an aggressive mastering chain might help it to sound as loud as the song feels like it wants to be. I err on the side of drums over guitars in my mix level preference though, so as always, YMMV!

I like the energy in A's Drums, Theyve got body all over the place. the out of phase ness of the cymbals is painful though. I don't know if that was on the room mics, overheads or what, but there was a major issue with mic setup on A. i think my biggest problem with A's drums is that they are too loud. if they were turned down, the level of energy might work really well in the mix instead of dominating it. but for 1 hr of work from scratch it sounds about right. I can easily spend more than an hour just assigning inputs, gain staging, and checking phase. nevermind actually placing mics, routing cables, tracking and basic mixing. so well done. the energy on this track is great, and certainly something worth learning from.
B's drums are a bit more basic bitch, but they do sound better. I'd guess that simply bringing the drum levels up a bit would solve a good chunk of that lack of energy problem. But correcting the issues with these drums wouldn't take as long as correcting the issues with A's Drums. I think it's also worth mentioning that the guitars in B lack energy as well. while they sound great, they don't feel as aggressive or powerful as A's. that made mix B as a whole sound weaker. All that being said, i prefer mix B. It's a bit more refined, but wouldn't take much tweaking to brighten up into something pretty energetic. some low mids here and there, some hi mids here and there, an exciter here and there and it would be pretty damn decent. (I should also say, that i genuinely can't tell if B's cymbals are also super phasey, and i just can't tell becuase they're not loud enough in the mix).
I didn't listen on headphones. just my monitor setup i always mix on.

I like the part at 1:54 where the Lewitt guys are putting up a foam tunnel in front of the Kick drum. I must assume they have never seen your video on stop cupping the Mic LoL!!!!

There's more high end in A, I like that one over the other.
But I couldn't have done either of them in a day, let alone an hour!!
Well done guys, loved this episode!

Mix A sounds like it made it to some mastering. Both very well done.

Very cool video! It's hard to say what mix I'd put in the final mix... Like the kit sound (and reverbs) on mix A better, but the sound of the cymbals and hi-hat in B better... Both cool though

I definitely prefer A overall. They weren't afraid to hit the drums with a little more compression, and they EQ'd the shells for a good top end attack. I actually think the way the overheads were EQ'd on mix B sounded a bit more natural, but the overall level of them could've been brought up in that mix.
Very cool video! Always interesting to see more-or-less direct comparisons in how different people approach a mix.

I listened to this on my 5.1 system and Mix 1 made me feel like I was center stage. A bit unbalanced but a very live feel. I felt the kick needed tweaking, but overall the best IMHO.
Mix 2 was less sonically pleasing and had less use of stereo, but had a better kick sound and felt polished and with some more time might've outshone Mix 1 with some extra tweaking.

I only listened on my tv, but mix A blows mix B out of the water. A definitely the winner.

Mix C. Lol. A is louder, more reverb. B sounds a bit dead. You all did an amazing job for the time frame!

Mix A for the win! Mix A was also most definitely Glenn and Alex. Great work guys with such limited time! Mix B was more on the safe side, but the lewitt mics still let through the tamber of the toms beautifully. :) Awesome idea you guys!

In short, I prefer Mix A. Great job on both teams' parts, cuz doing all that in an hour is amazing! 🤘🏻In more detail: without reading any comments, and after listening a few times, adjusting for volume level (mix A was overall louder than mix B, but one click of my keyboard volume matched them quite well), I lean towards mix A as "better" for my ears. The cymbals are more present and swirl around my head, and the snare and kick are clearer. I like the sound of the snare in mix B a little more, though.

I'll choose Mix A purely because of that Snare. Mix B sounds much more natural as if I was in the room but also more muted than A. B would be great for a jazzy sound, but for metal definitely mix A

  • @screamys.m.6921

A's definitely Glenn's. It sounds louder but I bet you that's the room channels in the corridor (which he very much likes to do). That definitely adds to the overall sound and makes the drums sound bigger, which allows heavy compression. Clarity and air of Mix A are on point adding intelligibility to the mix (something B has a lot less of). And the low freqs of the Kick ...oh man that sounded so fat.

Mix A agressive and full, bangs like a real kit and is super alive in the mix. Mix B sounded sorta sterile, I think its ready for more volume, less agressive with sweet spots that make it sit in the mix better

I went back and forth a few times listening with my Kali LP6s and my Sennheiser HD 280 headphones. Besides the drums having different mixes, I found the overall mixes were different. I thought that Mix A's kick needed a bit more snap but Mix B's had too much. Mix A had louder cymbals and and overall better sound although I did like the snappy crack of Mix G's snare. I think mix A was Glenn's and also the winner!

Mix A is killer and dynamic. Maybe a bit too much compression on the kick, otherwise good. B sounded more leveled but not loud and expressive enough. Needed more attack. I'd drop the kick a bit on A or turn B up a bit in general, but I'd use either depending on the application. Both are really good for 60 minutes. Cheers!!!

Got a set of matched Lewitts mostly based on what I've seen Spectre demo/discuss - I only use one but if it dies I know I don't have to touch a knob and just swap em out to get right back to where I was.
Punches above its price point in that I've heard more expensive mics sound worse; disclaimer - not clear on all my mics yet, but tryna learn. I'll have to as I've been experimenting with ruggedized tube/strip mic designs and at some point I'll have to learn what it's actually supposed to output instead of just making the thing work.

I like parts of both. Mix A is a lot louder and the drums are more upfront. Mix B is a little darker, but the drums fit in the overall mix better. I prefer B.

  • @AlexandreCriado

Mix A because punch, dynamics and cutting through. Mix B sounds good but a bit overprocessed/compressed maybe? TBH something in between the two mixes would be awesome
