  • The first single hose regulators were not quickly accepted by long time double hose divers. Alec shows several early single hose regulators with some crazy features.
    ** In this episode of Vintage Scuba **
    - a 1970's Spanish made Nemrod "Meteor" with built in "J" valve, weighing 3.5 pounds
    - a early 1960's Healthways chrome "ScubAir 300" with sonic low air alarm and built in yoke valve
    - a early 1960's US Divers "Aquamatic" with side exhaust
    - a 1960's Healthways "AirFlo", where the first stage screws into the yoke

    Great video again. They are just getting better. I am still using my Calypso VI with a J adaptor , in a weekly basis, and after almost 40 years, original HP seat, still working like a charm. They were really built like a tank.

    This makes me wish there were scuba companies that made retro styled gear, even if they're only rated for light recreational diving. Imagine the looks you'd get whipping out a fully chrome 2nd stage on the dive boat!

    Hey Alec, great video! I have an Airflo and valve setup 1st and 2nd stages along with a valve on HW tank. The neck on that valve is rather short and that makes carrying it difficult for anyone with bigger hands. Not that that matters to a dedicated HW collector like us.
    Unfortunately I do not have a screw on dust cap, but I do have the yoke adapter. Have you seen one of them? I can try to get you an image if you care.
    I also have a spare second stage but only one first stage. I would love to add an Airflo gauge to my collection so if you or any of your readers out there know where one can be found, please drop me a line. Thanks and keep up the great work!

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. I'd like to see the adapter I didn't even know it existed!
      I think I have an extra dust cap.
      The normal Healthways Airflow valve was plenty long. Later they had a very awkward shot neck that was impossible to carry but I didn't think it came for an Airflow. Send me a picture of that too. I probably have an extra long Airflow valve if you like.
      Where are you?
      Alec

    • @DonFassbender
      @DonFassbender 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm in Marquette, MI. The above video is a quick look at the adapter. I'll add another video showing the valve when I can. Right now the tank is being filled. I have a second valve around here somewhere...

    Wonderfull videos! By the way, so far i know, the Nemrod Meteor is from about 1972. First commercial single hose reg was the australian Porpoise from Ted Eldred. Very rare outside Australia.

  • @owenmougenot712
    @owenmougenot712 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    hi Alec I happened to pick up an old Poseidon 5000 second stage reg.it works and all the rubbers look in good shape, I just love the feel of using this old reg. I was wondering if there were any historic problems with them or is it safe to use as a safe second with a current reg set? I recall in one of your vintage videos you mentioned that there were some old regs that locked up if the first stage pressure got too high in stead of free flowing. I think it might have been a heathways? I have also picked up a seaquest bcd with the safe second combined with the bc fill pipe. Are these good to use as a safe second ? It took me a while to figure out how to manually inflate these. Would enjoy seeing a pic of your collection room(or barn probably) mine is taking over the basement slowly . Keep the vintage and tech tips coming. Owen M

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Poseidon 5000 is a good old reg and would work fine in any set up. It's a bit big for a safe second but would do the job.
      I'm a fan of those Made-To-Be-An-Octopus safe seconds. They are cheap, rugged, light, flat on your chest and easy to deploy. The XS Scuba Alt Air is one example - a good one.
      I'm NOT a fan of BCD inflator/Octo units. They are expensive to buy and service, heavy, bulky and can be a pain to use either as a BCD inflator or as a safe second. It's an example of an idea that sounds wonderful - but doesn't come off so well.
      I've made a video of them. Maybe you can find it with Kevins help.
      Take care Owne.

  • @rickkinney2544
    @rickkinney2544 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video, very interesting. It seems to me I remember the neck strap was for letting the second stage hang around our neck when we were out of the water. Doing a beach dive or whatever. I don't recollect we had lots of ways to keep it from just hanging down by our sides and banging around back then. I'm sure there were ways but a neck strap worked pretty well for that purpose as I recall.

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There was an unreasonable fear of losing the second stage when single hose regs first came out. Old divers using 2 hose regs said that the new 1 hose regs would fall out and get lost behind you. It wasn't true, but these old guys (me included) didn't like the new regs so we made up stories about them.
      My scuba instructor in 1960 told the class, " Don't buy one of those new-fangled 1 hose regulators. They'll kill ya'". That gives you an idea of the attitude.
      You may notice that dive courses include the loss and the recovery of the regulator if it does come out of your mouth. Not a big deal.
      The neck strap was more nuisance than help. I'm glad it's gone.
      Alec

    Great stuff nice and chrome like a Buick! If someone have a one hose regulator did they make an adapter to ad more hoses Like BC , gauge etc thanks to you and Kevin keep the mojo

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      As accessories like BC inflator hoses and then Safe Seconds came along, owners of old regulators that did not have extra ports could buy a TEE. It was just like a miniature plumbing tee. It went into a port and provided 3 extra ports. I still have lots of them in the shop. Alec

    to open another can of worms, the best breathing reg I ever had was the tekna 2100B.

      It was pretty good. Like a lot of Tekna products, it was ahead of its time.
      Pilot valve 2nd, side exhaust, super light, all plastic and you're right, a super easy breathing reg.

    I was shocked to learn that my U.S. Divers Conshelf -14 is now considered a "Vintage Regulator!" I have to order parts for it on a vintage dive web site!

    • @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter
      @AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Conshelf name first appeared in 1965 and a Conshelf regulator of some form was made until into the 1990s.
      It was one of their most popular regulars, partly because it was really their ONLY regulator at various times.
      It's a solid, diaphragm first and downstream 2nd - nothing fancy or even outstanding about it. Just a good reg.
      You can get new parts for it from Trident Dive. You will need to order through a dive store but you can see the parts in the Trident Dve catalog online.

      Oh yeah!! Any regulator more than 25 years old (with a VERY few exceptions) is noticeably harder to breath. It's also harder to exhale which is a big source of fatigue. Don't think about getting a vintage regulator if you're looking for easy bretahing. Alec
