What is democracy really? Is it what the west says it is? I mean sometimes Africans feels, what the west says it is, is not democracy. Democracy is only democracy when the west is the one who declares it to be (doesn't matter how you feel really) not when you are the one defining it.

@@Komeshokakunanwene Democracy is pretty simple to understand actually. If people in the country have the right to elect their own leader than a country is said to be democratic. Democracy allows anybody to be the leader of the country. Ask to yourself can in your country any random person has the right to be the leader or not. If the answer is yes than your country is democratic otherwise it is not.

I have to, rather begrudgingly, concede that almost all countries in the world, including those who are ostensibly examples of democracy, are not exactly covering themselves in glory. Human rights and citizens rights are going backwards at a frightening pace. It seems that the state is now replacing the aristocracy, feudal lords and the church in becoming the oppressors of the citizens. All the hard work of the French Revolution going down the drain. When has a military junta, anywhere in the world, willingly given-up the power they stole? Look at Myanmar right now- as soon as the military started losing their control, they took control back in a violent coup. Unless something changes quickly, Burkina Faso is looking at years, if not decades of military rule. One more thing, what else does a military junta inevitably do- it strips the country of whatever limited wealth it has, while making the junta leaders and their families incredibly wealthy. Just look at Equatorial Guinea. A very sad sad day indeed and B.K. should be have their membership in ECOWAS stripped until they return to democratically elected government rule. Never forget how Muammar al-Gaddafi transitioned from revolutionary leader to terroristic despot.

Democracy basically just means more powerful and much wealthier people than you can tie down your government with endless debates and endless objections until you agree with the demands of the rich and passes laws that favor them. Then miraculously your government will be labeled "democratic" and legitimate. If not then the rich will continue to play games and block your government so your country becomes ungovernable.

Africa does not need democracy. Africa needs meritocracy.
African countries need order, security, stability and peace
Democracy is based on popularity contests between two or more parties who promise the world and deliver almost nothing.
Democracy is based on a confrontational system in which two or more political parties block each other's policies.
These parties do everything to divide society while fighting each other for political power.
Their goal is political power not economic development and the bettering of people's everyday lives.
How is this system supposed to develop a developing country or a Continent full of developing countries full of social, economic and security problems?
Democracy also breeds ethnic, regional, class and sectarian divisions. Democracy prevents governments from getting anything done in a fast and efficient way.
Democracy is incompatible with bringing fast economic and social development to developing countries.
Developing countries need a one party system based on meritocracy. A system where highly educated public officials get appointed and held accountable according to their merits and in accordance to their performance instead of their popularity in popularity contests.
A system whose very goal is toward merit and good performance to emphasize on national unity across sectarian, ethnic, class and regional lines.
A system that has Zero tolerance in corruption and where politicians and officials are held accountable for their performance.
    Meritocracy, yes.
    Democracy no.

    • @peabase
      @peabase 2 ปีที่แล้ว

You must be American. Parliamentary democracies are far less likely to experience the infighting and populism that you describe. In a true multi-party democracy, the parties have to keep it civil, or they can kiss a place in the next coalition government goodbye. Coalition agreements weed out the wildest promises. Voters actually read these agreements, so parties that overpromise will face disgruntled voters come next election. A disgruntled voter won't have to suck it up either, or switch allegiance to a party that's diametrically opposed to the previous one, since there's a broad spectrum of political parties and candidates to choose from.
Africa's main problem is that political dividing lines closely follow ethnic divides. I know from my years of working there that many African countries simply don't make sense. It's as if their borders were drawn to ensure that they would fail once independent. Enlightened absolutism -- some even suggest the former colonisers should return to set things right -- isn't the solution either, because it would simply be unacceptable to those who're sidelined. There's no alternative to power-sharing, but how, that's the issue.

Well, if truthful, a military dictatorship can turn into a functioning democracy. Let‘s hope burkina faso goes down the path of south korea, not its northern neighbour

Yes democracy is a western concept from BC Greek society to Roman society. Most countries only started “democracies” after the monarchy was changed into Democratic rule but the same people and families still rule these lands because of their massive wealth. All of western Europa would have been communist if it was not for the GREATEST LEADER EVER IN WORLD HISTORY.

Most if not all coupe coincides with large aid from developed nations. It could be small as few million to hundreds of millions. Sudan was due large military aid package from US. But prior to payment junta took control. Causing the payment not being made. In this case the junta was cut out of the aid prompting a coupe of civilian rule. The junta likely know aid would be voided if military took control. But rather letting the civilian government take the aid they forced the aid to be voided by their action.
Which in all incident neither civilian or military authority do not suffer the most. The people who are need of suffers.
