They're fantastic rifles. I have three. Possibly my favorite Mauser. Unfortunately this vid is three years old now and the situation has changed. Good luck finding cheap ones any more.

When the First World War began, Austria-Hungary, like other nations, suffered from a great shortage of weapons, Austria solved it by buying manufactured weapons for export, Greek mannlichers and 7mm maseurs for Chile, I think, the same variant that they commonly produced for Mexico. After the independence of Czechoslovakia, small numbers of these weapons were in the territory of the new republic, most likely with some guard units or reservists; When the government wanted its own factory just after the war and was able to equip it from repairs, they first looked at ŒWG, the Austrian Arms-Manufacturing Company, but the Swedes overtook them when buying machines for Mausers and Schwarlozes, but according to some legends they had to buy some Mexican version sights
    there.

I have one of these "E" series. My understanding is Turkey bought more 98/22s . Where the non series and A-D series were former Czech military. The "E" marked ones were made specifially for sale to Turkey.

I picked one up about 12 years ago from Big 5 after selecting through 10 rifles. These are awesome rifles! For an old rifle mines can bang a 30 inch steel gong at 200 yards which is still to me combat accurate shooting the Russian made 7.92X57 198 grain FMJs. Very comfortable shooting than my M91/30 Mosin. I picked up for $178.00 back then.

I sold one earlier this year for $300 with the bayonet. It was one of the 1929 E block Turkish contract rifles. Great condition, great bore, but mismatched bolt was very stiff. Took awhile to get that thing sold.

I got my 98/22 at a local gun store several years back that just had it listed as “Mauser 8mm”. Got it for a great price, the bore is a little dark on it but it’s in overall good shape and it’s got a fascinating history.

Would you be able to tell me if the action screws are different than other model 98s? I have a Persian 98/29 but it’s missing both action screws. I’m wondering if the Turkish ones would work. Thank you!

It does not go in the trigger guard. The hole in the trigger guard is not a winter trigger that attaches on the trigger guard.

I got to look at one of those but had no ammo. An Iraq vet brought over 2 rifles for me to check if they looked ok to shoot, a 1888 commission made in 1890 and 98/22. Both had Turk marks and the 88 was very well worn but the 98/22 was tight and perfect with a sharp new bore and matching numbers. I read that most 98/22s were worn out

My buddy bought one recently and I was impressed with it. It's extremely similar to my Chilean 1912 in terms of ergonomics. And 8mm is everywhere for the most part. I saw one, yeeeeaaars ago but I got an Argentine 1891 instead. If I see another in good condition I'm getting it immediately! Hahaha!

Here’s one thing you didn’t about the Czech Mauser Vz. 98/22. The Vz. 98/22 tangent rear sight can be adjusted incrementally as I found out from someone who commented in C&Rsenal’s Mauser 1912 rifle video because... I really wondered if the Vz. 98/22 has that ability. But thank goodness someone answered my question about the 50-meter incrementally adjusted mechanism. The Vz. 98/22 has a incrementally adjusted rear sight.
The Mauser Model 1912 rifle is a copy of the Gewehr 98 but the 1912 tangent rear sight does not have the mechanism to incrementally adjusted the rear sight. Only certain Mauser rifles have that ability to use the incremented rear sight.
By far, the Vz. 98/22 Mauser rifle is the best Gewehr 98/Mauser 1912 copy.

I bought a AS FA ANK ARA K.KALE 1945 Turkish mauser 8mm with bayonet for $125 that was a steal. Shot it twice and gave it to a buddy of mine to look at it, the end of the barrel got a crown shape from all of the full metal jackets shot out of it.

Great video... I recently was 'given' a cz 1898/22, E - series, that was just identified by Karel at "Czech my guns" on youtube. What is the best ammo (if any) to buy for this weapon?

Excellent video. Thank you. I got one gifted to me, and I will say it's a hell of a rifle. I love this thing. Sights are a little hard to use in low light, but the bolt is smooth and the gun I have is in good shape. Love this rifle, though, it is heavy!
@milsurpworld do you know what kinds of bayonets fit the VZ 22 specifically, I can't tell which ones will fit.

Edit: while getting more photos I found the import mark, says: M1938 Turkish 8mm A.I. GEORGIA VT. well that answers my question.
Looks alot like mine.. except mine was made in 1943.. Took the hand-guard off, to school to the wood shop teacher, He said it was mahogany. course all you could smell was Cosmaline.. Lol google says Cosmaline isn't a word.
Maybe you could help me figure out what it is.. I havent looked at it in a while so this stuff is off of memory. 30" barrel, It had that lug like thing 1/2 up the stock. sight starts at 100 & goes to 2k (I think it was replaced idk, its not all matching though a lot is). The bayonet has no hole in it for the cleaning rod as it is between the barrel & the bayonet. The bolt disassembly hole in the stock is steel but the inner ring is all brass, straight bolt handle. I just got hit with a wave of deja vu as if i've asked this before.. If it will let me I'll attach pictures of it via discord link, Or i can email you.. And to think I got that instead of a swiss Kar Kurz, cause a somebody was so arrogant.

it is spelled cosmoline, thats why you couldnt find it.
if your rifle is a turk, check out this website, some examples that might help you nail down what it is specifically www.turkmauser.com/models.aspx

@@MilsurpWorld my reaction exactly I spent an hour or two taking off the paint and everything it's all matching so I feel like I did a good job I'm going to try to take the stock to a gunsmith and see if he and Patch It Up back to original length and make it look at least more original than when it was before because I do not want to replace the stock the stock is beautiful on it
