Seeing as this is my most popular video I hope I can still be transparent about my experience in an online MSW program. After one year and one semester and one extremely painful experience, I took a leave of absence and decided to transfer to a traditional on campus full time program. I have a couple other videos on these topics. I do believe that online programs can be a great fit for many people and their needs, but it just wasn't for me, and it wasn't because it was too difficult to manage or that it wasn't a reputable or legitimate path to an MSW. I've learned especially over this past year that I am someone who values purposeful learning and learns best when I directly experience things and must wrestle with the nuances and complexity of challenges. My hope is that being in physical proximity to my educational resources and building face to face relationships with them will help with this unmet learning need.
Congrats on finishing your first year! I love how you can go into MSW with any undergrad major. Business is a great background that you may be able to incorporate later on I.e. TH-cam
Thanks! I checked out your channel and love your content too. I used to be interested in working in higher ed and worked part time in career services when I was I undergrad. Love that area of work.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughtful introspection. I was also an undergraduate business major and relate to your inferiority complex. When I took courses such as Theories of Personality and World Cultures during my last year of undergrad, I felt more engaged and knowledgeable than the liberal arts majors. I am currently taking some psychology and philosophy courses at a local community college and have considered a career in social work because psychology often ignores cultural and political context. I might continue my education beyond community college and earn a second bachelor's degree in psychology. Your background in business will certainly help you establish a private practice. I wish you nothing but the best and brightest future as a clinical social worker!
I really enjoyed your video. Im currently going to school to get my BSW, hopefully I will be graduating in 2022. I love how honest and genuine you are.
Thank you for sharing your experience Vi...I also spoke with another Asian American student who is in her first year of an MSW program and she was also disappointed with the lack of challenge. I watched your other video about the oppressive origins of social work which was excellent. I'm struggling to find the right place to share my gift of healing, and am currently in massage therapy school but would like to do more cognitive therapy with others. So I am considering applying to an LICSW program as opposed to an LMHC program because I don't agree with many aspects of the DSM/standard psychotherapy which really screwed me up at least with its approach. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know!
I agree. As a social work grad student and as sociology undergraduate graduate the most ofbthe classes are catered to white students. I barely learned anything new.
@@CriticalHealingMoment TH-cam recommended your video when I searched “Black tenure track professors”. That’s quite interesting (perhaps because you support Black liberation LOL), but regardless I’m so glad to have come across your channel as I create TH-cam content about research, academia, and social work. Yes-lots of writing, but there’s also a ton of support for helping build this skill (for folks who are nervous about that part).
Yass preach! It sucks that you felt white folks were coddled. Hopefully, they step-up in terms of the curriculum for that Racial Justice class in the future.
Such and insightful video. I believe we are in the same online program, I am on in my 3rd semester now taking research and looking forward to field placement. At one point I wanted to transfer to an in person program because of the expectations I had that weren't being met...but this works best for me being an online student. I would love to connect with you. Maybe you can give me some sound advice being ahead of me in the program. Wishing you a successful Spring semester!
hey there! i'm not sure if we're in the same program but if we are i don't recognize you from any of my classes. my advice is to use your professors and advisor as a resource as much as you can. i am currently on a leave of absence and the reasons for that are on a couple other videos on my channel. good luck!
I’m clinical track and in my first year. I just took an LOA this past fall. I didn’t want to take an entire semester off but you cant just sit out from one class. Currently in my research class but thankfully my teacher is amazing. Thanks so much. I hope you enjoy your LOA. It’s been a crazy year so I understand.
Hi, I want to apply for my msw but don’t have experience that I can use or put on my application. I only have retail work. I have my bs in psychology but that’s it
A BS in psychology is great experience already. People go into MSW programs from all kinds of backgrounds. Some people try volunteering to see if they like social work type of work for experience. Before I applied for my MSW I was an online teen mental health coach for one year. I loved it and got to work alongside social workers when I did that.

Ughhh, I am starting off the traditional track too. Thank you for sharing your experience! Loving it as I am submitting my apps right now.
Good luck!
I'm about to apply for my MSW in social work. Hearing your experience is interesting. It sounds like a similar set up as the program I'm looking into.
Good luck!

Thank you! It's so important for me to show up authentically in person and online. Good luck on your BSW! My expected graduation date is also 2022.

How many hours per week did you spend on classes?
What online program are you enrolled in.
I don't share it publicly for privacy reasons but it's an online program for a US News Top 10 ranking MSW program.
It sounds like Boston University. Top 10 program and live classroom component gives it away.
What about your University ..plz tell am from India
Sorry I am not disclosing where I go to school for privacy reasons.
