  • Welcome to my first video of my USS Arizona in 1/200 scale build! This video just covers the basic goodies I'll be using in this build and it takes a look at some of the basic painting that I have done on the hull
    www.scaledecks.com This is where I picked up my wooden deck. I highly recommend them.

    Pearl Harbor has so many surprises there. The Arizona, The Missouri, The Utah(lots of folks miss that one), the museum at the Sub base, love the history there.

    I agree with Glass TopRX7. However, I grew up with enamel & have no problems using it. Testors is discontinuing their line of paints except their 1/4 oz. bottles so we all basically have no choice, but, to hobby without. I have multiple projects going at once so drying times are never an issue. But, it does sand like crap. This Arizona is nice. It captured my imagination as a kid. This kit is huge. I was stationed at Pearl Harbor & viewed the memorial all the time. I walked around Ford Island to view the Utah & got a real good outlook on the layout of the harbor. Good video.

    I went the other way, learned to paint with enamels, tried acrylics and just could not get them to work, went to Lacquers and will never look back, Lacquers dry really fast, go on like a dream, are easy to mix and get great effects with, and the range of colours from companies like Mr Color and Others is A+. Yes, they are finicky about paint to thinner ratios, and smelly, I can deal with that, its called ventilation and levelling thinner. Oh, and a dust mask. The results are worth the extra care... And I can still use enamels for all the hairy stick detailing. I can even use the lacquer thinners on the enamels.

    Can't wait to get the engines and rudder system set up in my Arizona. Gonna be interesting, but unique. I'm going for a show quality ship, that is drivable.

    These ships were generally kept pretty clean and well painted ...common sailors were kept busy chipping off old paint then painting and re painting everything ...the saying was ...if it moves salute it....if it don't ...paint it....not to mention... when in port there were civilian crews that made their living painting navy ships that dropped anchor there ...in hong kong they would paint the entire ship in three or four days ...for payment they got the ship's garbage...every scrap of it was then sorted and either eaten or recycled some way or another.. they even reused the ship's coffee grounds.....so making it look battle worn is probably not very realistic....at least not back in the day

    For the really brave Digital Navy has a 1/250th scale USS Arizona available for $36. You get the kit on a CD as it is a card model. Can be easily rescaled to 1/200th scale. Buildable as either a full hull or water line model. Finish appearance of course greatly depends on the builders skill. Plus DN is in the US

    That would be my last choice of paint, hate enamels, I'm an acrylic\poly guy, lacquer for some stuff. Never liked working with enamel paints, slow drying times, pain to clean up, sands like crap. In 90's when acrylics became less sketchy with more options I switched and never looked back.

      The most current explanation and demo is on our RMS Titanic video 5. In the Arizona videos, I weighed the deck down after gluing it in place. I guess I thought it would move or lift up before the glue sets up. There’s a better and easier technique that we demo in the Titanic video.

    Nice build. With the price they charge for kits now photo etched should be included. The industry is out of control on pricing the hobby is on the decline and price is helping

    • @paulmcwilliams1709
      @paulmcwilliams1709 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      AMEN! The hobby is not going to have new members because the prices are way too expensive for a young model builder to afford it! I'm 57 years old and I started building models when I was 7 years old. The 1/25 scale model cars that I built were around $2.25, now 1/25 scale model cars cost around $20! Now how many kids can afford that?

    • @StryderK
      @StryderK 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s really not the model maker fault. For example, Trumpeter, or in this case Wasan Plastic Company, if they want to sell stuff in the U.S. has to go through Steven International, their distributor here. Steven will charge a mark up as distribution fee. This plus the store mark up are what kills the price. Ex. The M1070 HETS (Hobbyboss. But owned by the same guys) I bought in China was only $80. Here it’s at least $130!!! A $50 mark up.

    • @kevinjhonson5925

    yes but my point was unless they mould the parts that you put on the lower hull in the same colour the whole exercise is a little bit pointless

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They were all molded in the same color. And even if they weren't, you could just paint them. It's not so much an "exercise" as it is to display the entire ship. If I didn't include the lower hull, I would have to make a water line display for it. Which is what a lot of people like to do. I just choose not to display this model that way.

  • @georgedistel1203
    @georgedistel1203 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is that main section of deck for the superstructure already attached? Was thinking of using that hull to build a circa late 1944 or early 1945 USS Pennsylvania for RC conversion

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      George Distel no, the hull comes as one piece and nothing else is attached. You can easily convert this build to RC. The main deck is three separate pieces, divided into thirds. So you have lots of options for your conversion.

    What i find pretty disturbing is: why are there so many "after market" extras??? When i build my 1:200 Bismarck from Amati, all these "extras" were already included! Wooden deck, steel barrels for the cannons, brass made photo plates and so on, it was all already in there! Why does Trumpeter do it this way instead??? i mean such a model is not cheap. If i bought my Bismarck model at once it would have been about 600 €. I wouldn't have built it if it was such a cheap quality like the standard kit of this one and had to buy the cool stuff additionally.
    And what is that? A plastic hull??? Are they kidding? With such big models i expect the hull to be made of a seperate wooden keel plate, seperate wooden vertical bulkheads, 2 layers of wooden planks and so on, so you have to construct the complete hull throughout several weeks (or months). For a 1:200 scle model this hull construction is way too easy for my taste.

  • @kdryan21
    @kdryan21 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    So you spend $300 on the model then another $300 on parts to make it look better. Any idiot could do that. How about showing us how to build an attractive model like they did BEFORE Photo-etched parts? People used to actually have to put work into a model to make it look good and did it without spending a fortune.

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kevin Ryan your math is off. But not what this build was about. If you’d like to see me do a build straight out of the box, check out the Wingnut Wings build I did. Of course, it’s not completely out of the box.... I did hand carve a new laminated propeller from scratch.
