When I was 7 years old, our mom was up late cleaning the house, this song came on the radio, I will never forget she woke me up out of bed, wearing a pink nightgown I sat next to the stereo on the floor listening to this song! Yes at age 7! I won’t say how old I am now lol! I told my family when I pass away, I want this song played as one of my all time favorites!

people are saying that the explosion was a suicide act and i keep thinking about how the dude felt - if it was a suicide act- inside the rv before the explosion. he might’ve played this song to calm himself down before dying. that’s really sad and scary.

I sang Downtown on the Epcot stage with Miss Petula many years ago. She saw me in the audience singing along with EVERY song. But when she finished her performance she hadn't sang my favorite which, of course, is Downtown. So I shouted out that she couldn't leave until she had! Then she invited me on stage to sing it with her! I will never ever ever forget that! What a thrill. Must tell you, we were both in our 60's! She was and will always be my favorite singer from the 1960's!!! (and the Beatles!)

And here I thought this was going to be AT&T's new ad campaign. If you want broadband Internet at home, you got to move downtown. If you want fibre Internet you got to move downtown. If you want DSL, well then you got to move downtown. Why? Cause we don't give a rats arse about people who live out in the country or in rural areas. We're too cheap to spend any capital to run fibre lines in rural areas of their service territory. Eventhough former Governor Bill Haslam gave them $45 million in his last budget to do so.

I played this song for my father a few years before he passed away. It was a year after both of his parents had died. He never spoke of any fond memories of the two of them, at all. Having lived his life a product of divorce and institutionalized by bouncing in and out of reform schools and various correctional facilities up until age 21, my father never had anything much pleasant to say about his childhood. I was going through iTunes and came across this song (I liked it because of a Seinfeld episode). As the song played, I saw and heard my dad recount and relive a long forgotten memory, in the mid sixties, of a maybe 6 or 7 year old him cruising down with his mother and father all singing along to this song. He told me it was the one time he remembered them as a happy family, tears streaming down his face. This remains the most tender and beautiful moment I ever had with my father. Whenever I get down in the dumps, I listen to this song and remember my father, and how precious and fleeting "family" truly is. Thanks for listening.

Downtown was the best. There were no big suburb's or suburban shopping centers yet. Almost everyone lived in the city. The only place to find everything was at the big downtown department stores. I really miss those. 8 floors, every floor a different department. The elevators were run manually by real people who would announce what was on each floor or you could ask them for help. While waiting for the elevator, the doors had windows, you could see the counterweights side up and down. Most of the stores were within a couple of blocks that you could walk to. Bus routes covered every neighborhood. You just walked to the bus stop, took it downtown, and did your shopping. At Christmas time when my parents took myself and my brothers and sisters downtown it was like magic. Christmas lights everywhere. The big department stores had moving Christmas displays in the big street display windows. Sidewalks crammed with shoppers. Cops directing traffic at each corner. Too bad it's all gone.

OMG you just filled in the rest of the memories for me! We used to go to the old Spiegel store in downtown Chicago and order things. Then we had to wait weeks for it to get delivered to our house. Don't forget the penny candy stores back in those days. Our parents would give us a dime, park in front of the store, and let us go in by ourselves to spend our dime! My favorite was the wafer like shell that looked like a space ship.

Are you sympathizing with a man that detonated a powerful explosive that destroyed people's homes, businesses, and livelihoods? His act took down the AT&T telecommunication network for millions of people in the southeast, including local emergency services. I actually live in Nashville, this is a horrible event, and even though no innocent lives were lost, people here are still devestated and heartbroken. I know I am, and everyone around me is too. This guy somehow felt like he was being courteous, or just wanted to come across as such, by warning people about the bomb and advising them to evacuate the area, but this is just a sick manipulative tactic that has altered people's perception of the event. Because of the manipulation, many people don't see this is for what it is, a car bomb destroying an entire block of historic Downtown Nashville, instead they focus on this idea that he was somehow ethical in his actions because he evidently didn't want to cause loss of life, and that he did all he could to evacuate the residents of the area.

From what I've learned, the man had several things going on. He lost his brother and father. Estranged from his mother. Had no wife or children and no known close friendships. He found out he had cancer. He felt alone in the world. He lived 8 miles from the bomb site. He may have been reflecting on how lonely his life was after all was said and done and the end was near. He also worked in securities and technology and had some paranoia about 5g. I think he literally wanted to go out with a bang, and he wanted his death to mean something. He clearly wanted to avoid taking lives. He parked outside AT&T. I think he may have thought he was doing something for society since he had some paranoia about 5g hurting people. Maybe in his sick mind, he felt like he was helping and going out on a good note playing an upbeat song about how wonderful it was to be downtown where your worries go away. His worries were about 5g for some reason. When have to consider his mental state when we think about the potential loss of life along with the catastrophic damage to buildings and people's businesses. He was not in his right mind. It is another sad event to add to the year we all will never forget.

When you're alone, and life is making you lonely
    You can always go
    Downtown
When you've got worries, all the noise and the hurry
    Seems to help, I know
    Downtown
Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city
Linger on the sidewalk where the neon signs are pretty
    How can you lose?
The lights are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares
So go downtown, things'll be great when you're
Downtown, no finer place for sure
    Downtown everything's waiting for you
    Downtown
Don't hang around and let your problems surround you
    There are movie shows
    Downtown
Maybe you know some little places to go to
    Where they never close
    Downtown
Just listen to the rhythm of a gentle bossa nova
You'll be dancing with him too before the night is over
    Happy again
The lights are much brighter there
You can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares
So go downtown, where all the lights are bright
    Downtown, waiting for you tonight
Downtown, you're gonna be alright now
    Downtown, downtown
    Downtown
    Downtown
And you may find somebody kind to help and understand you
Someone who is just like you and needs a gentle hand to
    Guide them along
So maybe I'll see you there
We can forget all our troubles, forget all our cares
So go downtown, things'll be great when you're
Downtown, don't wait a minute for
    Downtown, everything's waiting for you
    Downtown, downtown, downtown, downtown
Downtown, downtown, downtown, downtown, downtown, downtown

What if it's not a "act of terror"??? This song speaks of happiness, community, and togetherness... This was person was clearly "hurting" real bad on the inside... Just the fact that a warning was sent out shows a rational mind suffering from some type of mental or emotional issue... I am a Nashvillian and our city has a lot of people suffering from mental and emotional issues... Our city should invest more in loving people with kindness and compassion... That is the way you fight mental and emotional brokenness...

I’m 65, my parents had this record in their collection. Life seemed simplistic in the 60’s. Black and white tv, no phone, tin bath on a Sunday!!!

We had a stereo hifi in 1969, one of those long low cabinets, my dad was into the old big band records but i remember we had a tijuana brass album, But I still remember downtown and other songs. And tin bath, yes. If you are talking about one of those old galvanized tubs? I remember we lived in a house and my mom would heat up water to put in it and we would have a bath. I think it was the house before we lived in the next one that had a claw foot tub where when we turned the water on sometimes it would come out all rusting from the old plumbing and we had to wait for the water to clear. We lived in an old farmhouse that was turned into a rental when the owners moved into town but still farmed the property. Even had farmer relatives that had modern plumbing but a still using outhouse out by the chicken coops! We'd go into town and eat at the coffee shop at the department store for a treat or go to town and get a cherry coke at the soda fountain and next door was the meat market with wood shavings on the floor. Remember when there would be fans like ceiling fans above the store doors out on the sidewalk. Me reminiscing too much here LOL. But loved those days!
