The thing i noticed about FU, just from playing it casually, is... it adds a lot of filler to the early game. Just the starting world alone goes from something you can do in half an hour solo to an all-afternoon endeavor if youre not optimizing all the fun away. Partially because of research hardlocking literally the entire game behind time investment. Until my most recent playthrough, id just started using /admin through the first planet to get to something resembling meat. The late game stuff is cool, but they make that late game so much more of a slog to reach. Honestly it reminds me of some of the rimworld controversies around Vanilla Expanded in that regard, where a lot of the mods made by that team have one or two unrelated mechanics just, tacked on.
personally i like frackin' universe, though it does get incredibly annoying when sayter deliberately goes out of his way to make another mod incompatible, especially when it involves stuff like bloating code with junk files so they cant be used also Sutekh94, just wanna say even if you think bringing up the drama was bad i appreciate it bc i only knew half the stuff you mentioned, i didnt know about the sulfuric acid oceans that were removed or about a lot of the content being stolen, it's nice to know about a lot of the stuff that did happen (EDIT: changed starbound to Frackin' universe bc I typed the wrong thing)
I should also add; the idea of the research system is "To encourage people to use more stuff at lower tiers", but, I find it does the opposite for me; it discourages me from playing on lower tier worlds and just presses me to rush to higher tiers so I can get research faster. It actually hurts my experience. It makes me rush to the end faster, which is the exact thing the research system is trying to discourage artificially.
A very good discussion of FU, and its stranglehold on the Starbound modding community as a whole. I have a love hate relationship with FU, for everything fun it adds it seems to have another unfun mechanic. Top that off with a horrible dev team and it leaves a mixed taste in my mouth. The Grind is annoying but the sheer amount of content it adds is fun to play. Regardless though good breakdown.
I realized recently just how much FU took from other mods and I was quite disappointed. A lot of their armor was taken from the kirhos, mantizi, and peglaci mods, alongside the weapons. FU, in my opinion, is just a blob that absorbs mods to be repurposed and recolored.
@@marzipug5439 if it was a modpack it would be shown as a mod list in steam, FU is a single mod that absorbed a bunch of other mods and there isnt a way to remove certain aspects without finding each individual mod used and putting your own version of FU together (or make some sort of mod specifically to stop those items from appearing) an example would be the difference between RLcraft and any of the FTB mods for minecraft, RLcraft you can take out certain pieces since it is a mod pack, the FTB mod is a singular mod that you cannot take apart that uses stuff from many other mods
I think I quit using FU some time around when the research system was implemented, but amusingly the last straw for me was not that. It was the new water physics that were implemented that made moving in liquids incredibly sluggish. This was a problem because I spend about 99% of my time building on ocean planets. It was only afterwards that I started hearing about all the plagiarism and seeing the lovely attitude of Sayter.
I've only ever heard of FU in steam comments or occasionally seen it pop up, and after this video, I don't think ill install it. It just doesn't sound like any fun I want to spend my gaming time actually gaming and the heavy grinding AND research just really aren't for me.
When I first played frackin, research was just a currency you gained from extracting and I didn't really understand a lot of why people had a problem with it. Then I updated to the latest version... I think one of the biggest gripes I have about the new research system is that it takes away what I enjoyed about my first playthroughs of starbound vanilla and the pre-researching frackin; discovering things. With the exception of a few metaphysics tiers that are hidden until you research the lower ones, everything you can do and make is revealed to you as soon as you have your personal tricorder.
i know many people hate the research mechanic, but to me it felt awesome because then i knew what i needed to do for an armor or weapon I liked, it gave me a focus point, where as the pre research i was mostly confused aimlessly playing starbound as if it were vanilla, it got bland and boring
@@theundeservinglemon247 Thats a completely understandable way to look at it, though some weapons and armor seem to be locked behind seemingly the wrong research, such as the Gauss weapons which are in locked behind advanced alloy gear despite the highest materials you would need to even make it being zerchesium, graphene, and a power core. While I understand It is on a higher research because it is a tier 4 weapon, because it is on the advanced alloy research rather than, lets say durasteel, you are required to go to proto and penumbrite planets (very VERY annoying places to be) to obtain materials that in the end you don't even need to craft the item that you actually want or that would otherwise have helped you overcome these worlds.
I just afk'd in one of those unknown worlds that has the unblockable madness modifier with a primordial soup pool, the survivor set, and a picture of c'thulu. Problem solved.
@@theundeservinglemon247 Yeah, same. I'm the type of guy who likes to have everything at hand to plan ahead and make my own decisions. I may get frustrated with having to discover everything by myself, although manageable, I'd prefer otherwise.
@@theelite1234 In my case, its I've played FU enough even with research that I already know most of the research paths and everything I need, the research system is just annoying anymore. It just takes away from well, exploration and building, it even I'd argue DISCOURAGES exploring at lower tiers, since you get MORE research for playing on higher planets. Because you et more research on higher planets, it brutally discourages low tier gameplay. And sad thing is, I enjoy lower tier gameplay more than higher tier, where-as with the research system as it is atm, discourages me from playing lower-tier.
I usually have a mod of some form to either accelerate the research process or simply choose to only use low end stuff forever.(You can see clearly which option i pick). Honestly, I may use the pixel to research. But FU's devs if they put anything in to disable said mods, I admit I'd probably uninstall frackin universe, and I'm sure many players would quit sooner or later. My big problem with the research system is, due to how you get more research from being on higher tier worlds, you end up basically being shoe-horned into only building on high tier worlds, and in many ways, its horribly balanced. You get 5-6 times the research on say an aether sea vs a tier 1 lush world. This is even worst when you consider each hour played you get 1 extra research, but then theres a bug in FU's research system where the bonuses for armor and some drugs don't even work. But in the name of "Balance" he won't adjust it for veterans who've played the starting mission multiple times or rather not spend 30 hours stuck on tier 3-4. This imbalance is worst for races; vanilla races still get the vanilla armors which, some of them give very good enviro bonuses, and oh yeah they ARE NOT LOCKED IN RESEARCH. So you can roll human and get an armor at tier 5 with +resistance vs everything but physical, or a floran and have burn immunity, or novakid with extra physical ect. Other FU specific races? Nope. So they are shoe-horned to need to spend even more research than the vanilla races. In fact, I'd argue Frackin Universe by itself on the whole is very, very poorly balanced. I found some weapons, with upgrades, to not only do tremendous damage but do so in multiple damage TYPES. Another weapon is OP and doubles as a hunting weapon. And I won't name which melee weapon is king but, its DPS is just absurd with maxed upgrades. Because the devs basically try to make you play only a very narrow spectrum of ways. Sayter himself even admits for example he doesn't even build anything, he just puts all his stations in a cave and then runs around the universe randomly. He doesn't build anything fancy. So he has no way to relate to how builders who may, say, want to build on a forest or desert, or FU's fungal planet ect. Or someone who wants to use the ship as a mobile base(though don't use it as a factory, bad idea you can crash your game). So his research system will never get fixed for those kinds of players, since "Your not supposed to make your ship into a base!" or stick with one very well built base/colony. Well, sayter, how do YOU think I am supposed to play, your only, one way to play? Not build anything cool, ever? Your research system seems to think I shouldn't. And the sad thing is even people who play FU often admit they DON'T like Sayter because of his bad design decisions. They love the mod, hate the creator. This is coming from someone who's played FU for over 1000+ hours. If you read this Sayter: think about those who like building elaborate buildings, and think about what its like to only have 1-2 hours in a single day at most. Heres a challenge for you; no playing the game more than 2 hours streight. If you hit 2, quit for the rest of the day. Oh yeah, no bases allowed on higher than tier 3 worlds. See how long it takes you to get to tier 6 before your bored to tears.
The strange sea mods have been working fine for a long, long time, I don't expect FU developers to patch them anytime soon because it's been over a year and I've never seen problems with them. The grindiest part of FU has always been liquids for me. It's a hassle to make liquid protocite out of your ores, the same with irradium. If you remove that part of the gameplay, replace it with endless oceans of liquid protocite, liquid irradium, mercury, and a whole bunch of other liquids, it decreases the amount of grind significantly. Essentia Obscura is the most profitable liquid, as you can sell tons of plutonium with it, given you have the gas centrifuges to do it. Some may find it unbalanced, but I personally enjoy to bookmark these locations for later use.
What I try to do wrt: extraction is to set up a base pumping lava into dynamos and centrifuges, so there's always something being extracted. I do all my crafting around there, so it stays loaded, and outside of keeping the water coolant levels up it's mostly a stress free experience
@@amiablereaper tbh i gotta try that, I've been having a lot of issues with many ores, mostly the radioactive and starter ores like iron and copper, thanks for putting it out there
You want a fun mod to look into, I had a lot of fun with Extended Story. Howevs, some of the weapons would be best suited with a little bit of invulnerability (Gyrusen has you covered) due to how destructive they are... but hoo boy is it fun!
Im having a lot of fun with FU in 2024. One thing i noticed is that your commentary on how you idle to get research. If your doing this then youll get drastically less research, your supposed to get out and exolore, do stuff, fight , travel around, do some mining. Youll get tons of research. I got literally 0 research after being idle for over 30mins.
You can't get 0 research that way. It literally ticks every second. I got 300 research by going to make a tea IRL after launching the game/character on ship
You know, the way you pronounced "controversies" sounds like a different word and was confused until I turned on the subtitles. It did bother me a bit but that's very minor, suppose it's an alternative pronunciations I'm unfamiliar with. I do have a love/hate relationship with Frackin', as I've spent over 2k hours on that game. Like the sprite work for that mod is quite inconsistent, often clashing with Starbound's style.
Honestly, in terms of FU's Research system, I never really had much of an issue with it? I never found myself struggling with not having enough Research ((the currency)) to obtain new recipes, and obtaining other items needed for Researching is a bit more interesting Madness is a bit more of a grind tbh, considering it can't be accumulated by just... playing the game like you can with Research Sure the modpack is really... really grindy, but like idk, I still find it more fun than Vanilla, particularly cause there's more to do as well ((i.e the modded dungeons and the various planet types)) and it does a lot of things that I WISH Vanilla did

To be brutally honest, you raise a valid point. The drama discussion either simply should've not been in this video to begin with, or it should've been placed elsewhere, such as towards the end so my comments about Frackin' Universe itself took priority. At the time I made this, I thought if I didn't at least mention the drama surrounding Frackin' Universe, some people might get up in arms wondering where the drama discussion is. If I did include it, people would get mad at me regardless. What wound up making me include it was me believing it was something the Starbound community needed to be more aware of. But the WAY I handled that, the STRUCTURE this video wound up with was just... That was a mistake. Not saying this entire video is a piece of shit, just that the positioning of the drama discussion within the video or its inclusion to begin with... Looking back, THAT'S what made this video so shitty. I could've been pedantic and told you you could've skipped the drama discussion entirely, but... Even though it's not publicly available, the likes to dislikes ratio this video has tells the tale, especially compared to the content I've made since. Yeah, I could've done better here. Much better. And it's possible I might remake this at some point in the future, keeping the drama discussion to a minimum.

That said, I can understand why you might think that was a rant. It was rather heavy-handed. Had you seen the rest of the video, you would've heard me say this: "I'm surprisingly okay with keeping FU as part of my Starbound experience, and I don't hold a grudge against FU or any of its developers." I'm sure the dude who made this video will be like ' I only wanted ppl to be aware of the drama. I'll remake another version of this without mudslinging fir ratings whOOpsIES.' 🤦♂️ Cool story bro, you totally weren't dipping a toe to see what works best for your channel, focusing on the mod content itself or the drama. That's why you spent almost 10 minutes out the gate on it. GTFO of here 😅 He may have provided what I was looking for but only after disqualifying himself as someone I want to hear the opinion of.
If you don't like the design philosophy of a mod or mod pack then just don't use it? I still don't know if I want to install it because I'm just looking for a general overview of what it does and have to click away because everyone wants to weigh in on controversies that do not concern the content creator or me. It is sooooooooo annoying. I'm like 20 vids in and have only come to the conclusion that I'm never going to find such a video due to people who want to condemn some ppl for gatekeepering content while they themselves want to dictate how those 'evil'ppl go about doing things. With no sense of irony. At least this guy didn't do that or I didn't reach that point of a too long video. So many others have. Like stfu and go touch grass ppl are here to play a game not have a debate on ethics.
Tldr, the depths of stupidity to which this game's community sinks itself is astounding. Hilariously so. And I play DbD 😂. Ffs.
@@richt7525you chose to watch the video. Nobody forced you. You waisted your own time.
I'd also like to point out, you watched the video, and were too stupid to realize that the mod dev intentionally made other mods incompatible. Him being an ass can, and has, effected the gameplay. That may not matter to you specifically, but he never made it for you specifically.
5 minutes in and you started with
"i wanna do a full summery of frakin universe i dont wanna focus too hard on the drama and ignite old hate"
"5 min later i havent spoken about the game and the viewer that came here for thoughts on frakin universe has heard NOTHING but your reignited hate"
Make sense dude make fukken sense
fuk me
"i also play in creative mode and dont actually utalize one of the main aspects of the game.........."
Seriously dude i wanna learn about the mod and youve tought me absolutly nothing smfh
@@Sutekh94 for some sort of like
actual feedback
i stopped watching around 7 min in
About half the length of the video
i learnt nothing about the mod other then
"you dont use the research and have no input"
"your genuine hate for the mod authors for this mod pack"
Now when i came here to udnerstand at least some of what the mod has on offer and left learning absolytly none of it
im less enclined to come back to your channel at all
Mabye retitle this video to be about your angry rant at the mod authors
AND THEN
make an actual thoughts video about
THE MOD ITSELF
with litterally ANY snippets of actual information about the mod other then the fact that you very clearly dont want to reccomend it
@@brooksie9999999999 I feel there's a bit of a misunderstanding here. That drama discussion was meant to be just that. A discussion, not a rant. A means to raise awareness, to tell the Starbound community that this is a thing, not me blindly spewing rage at Frackin' Universe, Sayter, and the rest of the Frackin' devs. If any or all of that came across as a rant to you, know that that wasn't the intent. That said, I can understand why you might think that was a rant. It was rather heavy-handed.
Had you seen the rest of the video, you would've heard me say this: "I'm surprisingly okay with keeping FU as part of my Starbound experience, and I don't hold a grudge against FU or any of its developers." Points that I still hold today. Also this: "If you've never played Frackin' Universe before, and you're interested in downloading it and giving it a try? By all means, go ahead. That's your call, not mine."
Your original points regarding the drama discussion are still valid, and when I do remake this, I'll more than likely simply remove that and find more points about Frackin' Universe itself to discuss. I'll leave this video up for the drama discussion and retitle it as you suggested.
@@Sutekh94 Nah im more saying
in the video your SPECIFICALLY saying this isnt about the hate its about the mod
Talk about the mod
make seperate video where you go on rant covering whole drama ordeal
seperate the videos
not saying you were having a rant
More saying TOOO go have a rant ina seperate video
