Frank in the shark sabre, knows the course really well! Thanks for the shout outs too! Loved to see the video and am happy you got some good footage for 10 minutes! It looked like a blast in that last upward run! Looking forward to seeing it again! Thanks tom
All right! The Algorithm just threw this video at me, and I'm loving it! Subscribed, and, though it's 2:00 AM my time, having a blast. Thanks for sharing your cool stuff!
Love seeing another video of this thing and you getting hiking off the float (briefly). A lot of channels move on from past projects immediately, so I was worried this would become a moth channel.
I’m glad you enjoyed my moment on the float, at least we know which part wasn’t up to the extra righting moment 😂 I’ll try to avoid becoming a moth only channel, plenty of other things like this to explore on the side!
Touch of main Cunningham to pull those main wrinkles out? Open the leach of both sails to twist the sails (match twist)? Maybe even a center line pair of vangs and the Cunninghams for easy adjustment? Looks like a ton of fun and a lot of agility required.
Yeah, I need to do something about the cunno on the main, it maxes out way too easily. Something down the centreline would be way better, and more efficient since I could cascade it over such a long distance. I think some of the wrinkles are likely from the stay tensions and mast bend being not quite right as well. It’s not too hard to sail surprisingly, the width makes it quite easy.
Very nice contraption, very gracile, I like it. A refreshing change from all these foil thingies. Pretty sure yours could hit 30 knots, with a decent hull and sail…if it is what matters
I think it would need a much better rig to go much faster in this light air, it looks fast on the video because of all the spray but it wasn’t that quick compared to the other boats. The other option is to just sail it in a lot more wind, which is cheaper and easier!
It's been good fun to watch you play with this unique design. I don't believe it was ever designed to sail yardstick around the cans. It's more of a fun boat designed for a 75kg guy who fully sends it on a tight reach in 15-20kts. The way most people sail cats and sailboards. Simply looking for max speed. Any decent 14' Cat (Arrow, Windrush, Maricat) would destroy it on a race course just like the Taipan 4.9. My advice would be to sail it by yourself on 20kt days along with the Sailboarder & Wingers., and forget about course racing. Cheers
It is very cool. I think the main is cut quite a lot flatter than say a Hobie 16, since the boat is 100kg lighter and there’s only one person onboard. It would have been nice to get some more Cunningham on, I need to build a more powerful purchase system to make it a bit easier!
Yeah that would be fantastic. I know that having the sail pop like a wing with the battens holding the shape is very fast when it's breezy. A couple of triple blocks would probably make it nice and easy.
looking at your upwind sail trim problems it's pretty clear that the easiest solution for you would be backstays to adjust mast bend and rake. would solve all the trim problems you were talking about, from the jib leech control to the bubble in the main and flattening off the sails. however I know jack all about the boat design and how feasible it would be to set them up as well as the bend characteristics of the mast so idk if it would work in reality or not
I believe one of the other ones actually made the wing wires adjustable with a pulley system to achieve adjustable backstays. It would achieve a similar thing on the mainsail as a proper Cunningham would though, so it would be easier to just make a working Cunningham. I also need to get those main side stays shortened so that they’re a similar tension to the lowers. The jib is a kind of unique situation because of the vang on the boom, I really need to make that adjustable on the fly as well!
Instead of making the jib kicker adjustable on the go would it be easier to make a jib cunno to twist of the jib without losing its stability? It seems to be a common control im seeing on double handers to control the jib
That’s an interesting thought, I’d need to find a way to run it down the jib boom though, back to where the strop attaches the jib boom to the deck, then down from there. Might just be easier to run the jib vang back along the foredeck and out each side?
I’ve thought about it but I think it would just be a really big, cumbersome moth. The wings aren’t really designed to be lifted either, so I can’t even make a dodgy L’Hydroptere unless I change how it all goes together!
The tricky part about putting foils on the floats is that they’re not really connected to the main hull by more than one wire and the forestay, so they might take off and leave the hull behind!
Hi my name is Ed can we talk I want to build one , I need length , width beam of hull and also width of over all of racks. Shit you did a nice job for sure
Hi Ed, I would have a read of the sailing anarchy thread linked below, there is a lot of good information about the boat there, including magazine clippings with dimensions: forums.sailinganarchy.com/threads/bethwaite-hsp-trimaran.244979/
We need more sailing videos like this!
I’ll try my best to make more like this!

Yep, Frank seems to know his way around the lake! Not sure when we’ll see this one again, but one day. Thanks for your help!

The Algorithm works in mysterious ways! I’m glad you like the video! Plenty of other videos on the channel to watch before you go to sleep! 😂

"If it doesn't break, it's probably too heavy..." Famous racer quote.
The only place weight is any good is in a steamroller 😉
@@TomStuchberySailing….Also anchors.
And maybe keel bulbs 😉
@@TomStuchberySailing ….I’d also venture that gymnasiums that don’t commit heavily to weighty items have a short future.
Haha I suppose the saying could be modified to include gyms, anchors, steamrollers and keels then. Might be a bit long to put on a t shirt though

I would love to see how this compares to the last non-foiling moths
There is a scow or two that races sometimes, given the sabres smashed me around the course I don’t think I’d be able to keep up with a low rider moth!

@@TomStuchberySailing yes true, I wasn’t mentioning stronger wind as necessary as well. Let’s say at least 15 to 20 knots of wind
Yes, I think it starts to come good in about 18-20 knots (mainly because I’m 120kg, so it takes a bit for me to get fully powered up)!

Yes, I get exactly that impression too, I’m about 1.5x too heavy, and it isn’t designed to go up or downwind very well!
I used to do Hobie Cats, and a lot of windsurfing, that looked like fun.
It is a lot like a Hobie and a Windsurfer put together actually! It was fun!
love the boom vang. I'll use the idea on a different boat
Sounds good, just make sure your jib boom is stronger than mine!
What a cool boat! The main looks like a Hobie cat and I bet a little more luff tension would help.

Yep, or I might even be able to run the purchase under the trampolines to hide it all away and make it super neat 😀
i love water sports. sailing, windsurfing. its so much fun
Me too, although I haven’t windsurfed for a long time! One day I’ll have time to get back into it!

Thanks Dominic, you’re my favourite cruising catamaran channel, I’ve watched heaps of your videos!
@@TomStuchberySailing haha awesome! Nice to meet you tom!
@dominictarrsailing you too!
Bummer about the heady pole but regardless I don't think I've ever spent 150 bucks on something as fun as that in my life.
Great video mate!
Thanks, I’m glad you liked it!

that is windsurf........ but like a kids bike with small wheels 😁
Yes, it’s a lot like an 80’s windsurfer with training wheels 😀
Awesome video! 😊
Thanks, I’m glad you liked it!
Cool crazy people!)
Thanks! 😁
Looks like the child of a windsurfer and a wheelchair !
That’s a very good way of describing it, it feels a bit like a windsurfer and a Hobie put together!
How much sail area does that thing have?
From memory about 18m2, but not enough either way for this kind of venue/course!
Upgrade to carbon boom? 😁
Possibly, or maybe eliminate the jib boom somehow 🤔
do you think it would work if you put some foils on it.
I’ve thought about it but I think it would just be a really big, cumbersome moth. The wings aren’t really designed to be lifted either, so I can’t even make a dodgy L’Hydroptere unless I change how it all goes together!
@@TomStuchberySailing you could put two foils on it. i would give it a try
