I dont comment much but i have to with this one, Conkers Bad Fur day is a funny, immature amazing game. I absolutely love this game because im a immature idiot thats easy to entertain. Game play was decent, controls seemed fine, and the story? Funny asf and off the walls
Conker's Bad Fur Day was a drug trip through an adult video game about a squirrel drinking booze and it wasn't really bad to say the least. I mean, who would play a platformer about a drunk squirrel? Me.
It isn't for everyone, but I really enjoyed the game. The humor is potty, for sure, but it went full force with the stupidity and was great for it. The controls were pretty rough for both versions, but I was able to get past it twice just because the charm of the game was so entertaining. The plot being everywhere made every "scene" interesting and really made you wonder what the heck was coming at you next. There may never be another game like Conker. Also as a furry who has tried those crappy steam dating sims, how dare you compare Conker to them.
I tried it on an emulator(had a major emulation problem at the final boss so I had to watch the last tidbits on youtube) and I'd say even if the humor can be pretty crude it's kinda nice since dumb shit like this is my cup of tea,but the controls on this game are rough and you often go through trial and error and scanning the place till u find what the game wants you to do so idk if I recc this per say
The best of furry dating sims / visual novels are fantastic and have great stories to tell, the only shame is many of them are not well known in US, in comparison to other countries where they’re beloved. And so as a result, the most well known ones here, are mediocre ones like Amorous, instead of the much more expansive ones. Thankfully Lovers of Aether which is more on the decent end, is pretty well known here due to be tied to a loved game. But anyway, I do agree that the comparison was weird
You play it recently? I went through and completed the single player and it was kind of a slog, I often got frustrated by the controls or lack of direction. Maybe we're more spoiled these days with games that control better, especially in the 3d platforming genre, but it's not what I would call a good Rare game.
wow never thought I'd disagree with Sabrespark. This is easily a N64 Gem in my eyes. To this day it's still good to play through, especially multiplayer. Oh well, I guess you had to be there at the time. I was like 8 when I played it first.
Yeah Conker Bad Fur Day is a great game on cut senses that having funny moments on swearing and censoring the words on funny to hear it. Bummer it was dark at the ending and they were making sequel before Rare was buy out by Microsoft.
I also played this game later in life. While the humour is a little outdated and the "adult" humour is very childish at times, i found the stupidity of it all very charming. The best part about the game is the fact that every 5 minutes you are doing something completely different and never stick to the same tedious playstyle for too long. I was always interested what idiocy the game was gonna throw at me next and it almost felt like playing a collection of minigames . I also liked the fact that it didnt feel like a collectathon since you dont have to go out of your way to find any of the collectibles hiding anywhere, you just play the game and see where it takes you. I enjoyed the game.
I think you went into this game with the wrong expectations. you were expecting a serious mature mascot platformed game but what you got was a parody of all the mascot platformers that were flooding the market around the time Conker came out which Rare contributed to. the main complaint with Conker when it was first shown off was that it was too similar to all the other mascot platformers so instead they decided to make it a parody of one of the genres that they helped popularize.
@@ChakatStormCloud Not to mention, what is up with this guy’s extremely weird speech pattern? Nobody talks like him IRL. For example: 15:21 _“I’m typically a sucker (PAUSE) for punishment...”_
I actually have fond memories of this game. The facial expressions were actually really well done, imo. It would be something I would replay for nostalgic purposes. Thanks for the review! Keep up the amazing work.
That's also pretty true, with everything you say about it being nostalgic, and everything else about the game, also, the only reason I like is because..... Flower titties 👙
21:25 A lot of people don't know this, but according to Chris Marlow (programmer on BFD and voice of Great Mighty Poo), the game was originally going to be uncut/uncensored. However, Microsoft was trying tp push the Xbox as a family console and had official rules about what they could/couldn't say or do. Marlow believed that was because Microsoft was still new to the console business and if they tried making it now, there'd likely be no issue. There's an interview with him on the channel Sola & Cola that's really insightful on some of BFD's stories.
That's funny because today I look back on the Xbox as the first console to specifically target an older audience, with its edgy logo and the presence of so many gritty "realistic" shooters and of course the _Halo_ series specifically which was a hit with college kids playing over the network in their dorms.
"Adult humor for the sake of adult humor" is literally the point of the game. If you can't embrace that, of course you're not gonna like it. It's not something to think too much about, it's just something stupid to laugh at.
My money says this guy is a leftist and expects humor to never be at the expense of anyone, except straight white males, and acts all highbrow about comedy that isn't targeted in that way. It's a twisted mindset to adopt because it's impossible to maintain because it doesn't have any proper foundation except genuine racism. "Sex jokes aren't funny" says the guy fine with a male anal rape joke.
When he said he couldn't finish it, I knew he didn't even give it a chance, I enjoyed it, and sure some parts were hard (mostly because my n64 controller had a faulty stick) but I enjoyed the story enough to finish it and the multi-player was awesome 4 players too. Back then you didn't know the difference between a bad controller scheme or not you just got used to the control scheme for each game you played.
@@shinobi197 This is so true! When I go back to play games from this time era, it boggles my brain how I didn’t realize at the time how bad certain mechanics were… For instance, “the getaway” was one of my favorite games on the PS2, but good lord the shooting mechanics were terrible and I only realized it last year when I went to replay it after having not played it for almost 2 decades!
I don't believe that Conker is a *bad* game, but tends to be very tedious, frustrating, aimless, etc. All in all, I enjoyed it quite a bit in hindsight, but while playing, I had some very hard times with the annoying bits. Live and Reloaded on the xbox was a passable remake, but eliminated a good bit of the charm, both in design and gameplay. That being said, I would recommend the latter for new players unless you insist on the "full experience", in which case I highly recommend starting with the first.
Agreed, 1st playthrough will have you looking at a youtube guide every sequence because the game wasent great at telling you what to do, also FUCK THAT LAVA RACE, seriously the worst level ive ever played in my life.
I've never played Conker but everything I've heard about Conker has been positive, I've never seen anything describing it as a terrible game or anything. Even going on Metacritic and other sites now it's all glowing reviews. I wonder if the verdict on Conker will be changing soon if it gets rereleased or something.
I think it's just a matter of how much hype the game has behind it. It's a really good game imo, but like games such as Earthbound and Chrono Trigger, the weight of the hype may make a game feel disapointing to those going in today with nothing but the hyper/word of mouth they'd heard.
Conker's Bad Fur Day was the mildest "mature" game that ever caused a fuss. Parents were doggedly warned that it was too raunchy even for older kids, but the game's humor is so tame and juvenile that you _need_ to be around 12 years old to actually laugh at it. I strongly suspect that playing up the M rating appealed more to middle-schoolers than college kids. I was 16 when this came out, and although I thought it was overall pretty great at the time, I was disappointed that the "adult" humor they marketed the game with turned out to be so childish. It was like Ren & Stimpy with some light swearing-poop/piss/barf/booze/booger/boob jokes, Nickelodeon humor with PG-13 dialogue. The most "adult" things about the game were the pop culture homage bits that younger players might not have recognized.
I'm certain that if I was 12 I wouldn't get any of the sexual innuendos, I'd just play the game to the end then probably drop it and play more banjo kazooie.
@@hecklejack7726 The first Mortal Kombat had more realistic gore back in the 16 bit era. CBFD's "violence" amounted to grainy red chunks spewing from grainy cartoon characters. It was more novelty than actual gore.
@@1un4cy If I was 12, I may have missed some of the innuendo's punchlines, but I'd certainly have known it WAS innuendo, and would have found the mere presence of innuendo hilarious, probably funnier than if I actually understood the joke.
Conker is named after British slang for the horse chestnut. well rare was a company that originated from the UK so the game will have humour that will only work in England.
It's not slang. Whoever heard of anyone call a conker a 'horse chesnut'. I've heard Americans call it that naturally without needing any context. It's not slang period. And also alot of humour doesn't translate well on the other side of the Atlantic. It's not simply us bongers talking in ancient sumerian. The state of young burgers.
I still find it funny how drastically nostalgia can change people's view on this game, like I feel like those who've never played it as a kid would think it was just some edgy clusterfuck of sex jokes, alcohol, drugs, pop culture references etc. While those who've played it as a kid would think it was just some edgy clusterfuck of sex jokes, alcohol, drugs and pop culture references AND IT WAS A FUCKING GEM
This is one of those games that "people only like because of nostalgia and furries." I love how old games being "overrated" and you only like it for nostalgia only SEEMS to happen with anthro-starring games.
Nah, definetly not true. I never played it as a kid, but only much later a few years ago. It's still fantastic and I don't get Saber's complains. I guess when your peak tv experience as a kid was veggie tales, your taste suffers a bit. I am also not a furry, tho if I played it as a kid and had seen Berry in her sport shorts... who knows?
I first played this game when I was like 22 years old, and I absolutely loved it. Nostalgia is not always a factor into what you do or don't enjoy, but can certainly guide your biases.
@@WobblesandBean That sounds very unreasonable of you. Just because people like an older game doesn't have to mean they are "blinded by nostalgia" sometimes it's just not your taste.
Coming from a British gamer, this has very “British” humour with a lot of jokes and references that would not translate well even to American markets. The various British accents such as scouse for the dung beetles would sound “off” if you didn’t have a point of reference for example. The references to jaws and matrix level in particular were done incredibly well but would fly over the head of anyone not 30-40 years old today.
"I thought Conker was a qt family-friendly character" Is it just me or most who reviewed the Conker games on YT repeat the same exact sentence nearly word for word for their script?
I was one of those kids (6yo) who got this game do to a uninformed parent. Mum found out after what it was like and just told me to not do or say anything in this game and left it at that. I loved it and still do.
Yeah oh their a cheat codes on Conker's Bad Fur Day you look it up on multiplayer, lives and difficulty settings. I only know easy, very easy and Conker a playable character in multiplayer.
Most of the comments already posted + your review of this game is the same mixed piled of feelings I had from when i saw this disasterous masterpiece at a younger age up until now. I unironically found it to be a gem in Rare's pile of creations, definitely not one to forget it if you've played it first hand-- and here i thought it was just another Banjo & Kazooie lol
It’s safe to say this game just wasn’t for you, certainly in the minority but that’s fine. Would have liked a mention of the multiplayer aswell as it’s one of if not the best on a system known for its great multiplayer games.
Agreed the mutiplayer was one of the things my friends and I spend hours almost as much and golden eye but not as much as Mario party. Saber sparks must not have irl friends.
I got this game when I was 8 and absolutely loved it, played and beat it 3 times, dug through the internet to find all the secret passwords, and became a beast on total war. It will always hold a very special place in my heart
One thing that I think is missing is how the tediousness and frustration isn't really a problem with Conker, but with the Rare collectathons from the era as a whole. Donkey Kong 64 and the Banjos both have similar problems. Banjo Kazooie is probably the one that has the least and it's why I like it more than the others. Mario 64 had a great balance with what it asked of the player and Rare saw that and basically said, "Bigger and more!" and ended up with DK64 having you replay full levels just to pick different colored bananas that you already saw with another character. I also honestly think the fact that Conker is so "from the era" is a plus instead of a detriment. Like it is so the opposite of timeless that it just works even through all the problems.
my parents got me a conker plush when i was like 9 or something because i played and drew conker all the time.. i dont know how i was allowed to play it so young LMAO i think my family just assumed it was fine bc it looked like banjo (also i played on a pc emulator that had a huge list of n64 stuff so they probably didnt think to check... woops)
That blockbuster employee blocked what could have been a great childhood game for you. I first played Conker when I was 8, and then played again and again and again through to adulthood. It's still one of my favourite games of all time. Perfect combination of toilet, dark and slapstick humour. Younger gens are missing out on this gem.
It may not have aged well, but the memory of a friend letting me borrow it because my parents wouldn't let me have it will always leave a fun fuzzy feeling in my mind.
I guess this game is somewhere on that line of "Either you love or you hate it", similar to Happy Tree Friends (which Saber reviewed a while back), but with this game's content veering a little less in the path or unadulterated violence in a kid-friendly shell and more in the path of general adult humor and content in a kid-friendly shell.
Quite interesting hearing a negative review of a game most people praise. Personally I like it since it reminds me of the South Park type of humor. It went all the way with its humor and I was laughing and having a blast all throughout, dated or not. What I will agree with is that as a platformer, it's aged horribly gameplay wise. But the cutscenes and novelty itself is worth it in my opinion to play.
We loved Conker because he dared to push the limits of what was allowed in a video game, especially for a Nintendo console. The events that occur are often funny and shocking because you can never predict what will happen next. While the gameplay may be rough around the edges, this game overall is one of the most memorable experiences I've ever witnessed. There never was nor will be another game that matches this unique flavor of game, and for that we appreciate Conker. If you want a game that will surprise and shock you at every turn, this game is perfect. I have a friend who has the entire Great Mighty Poo song memorized, and I know most of it myself lmao. Now I'm tempted to replay this treasure, this oddity of a game. (btw, it was renamed to Twelve Tails early in development because fans/media were confusing the title "Conker's Quest" with "Conqueror's Quest")
I LOOVE this game, I just wish it wasn't just mostly toilet humor. I think ending the poop jokes w the great might poo would've been the best thing to do, bc that's like the only funny poop joke in the game
Forever grateful for the Hollywood Video employee that kept his mouth shut when my mother and I got up to the register with CBFD. 11 years old was way too young for this, but I had a great time.
As many said, it really is a game for younger players at heart and what /they/ think a rated-M game would have in it, which you can clearly see in all the poop jokes and writing IMHO. I think playing the game with that mindset makes for a vastly different experience.
I was an immature 19-year-old in an immature 2001, so Conker was a dream experience for me. Was it the best platformer? Hell no, but I spent my whole life playing games like Spanky's Quest, so this was a breath of fresh air. Still, I can agree it did not age well, but to its credit, I still reference that game (one of my favorite insults is from the final boss fight, "You're not very good at this,"), and still listen to the music occasionally. And yes, that includes the operatic song of The Great and Mighty Poo. 8/10 in 2001, and I agree with your assessment of it now.
To this day I can still recite that whole song from memory lol, I'm 37 and played this back when i was a kid and my best friend and i still like to occasionally break out in to a rendition of Sloprano's theme.
I loved this game and still do to this day. Most others I talk even tell me how they love it too, so I adamantly disagree that it sucked. The only reason it didn’t do well was it’s release at the end of the N64’s lifespan, despite that it even got a remake because it had enough fans. It’ll always deserve it’s spot on Rare Reply, it’s a drug trip of a game. It’s one the best N64 games out there.
@@RiverRoestdeKunstenaar the multiplayer is the main draw for me when it comes to both games: kind of a rarity to have bots on such old titles, and the customizability was a welcome feature.
@@RiverRoestdeKunstenaar Agree on the Graphics, it definitely looked Next-Gen for its time, rivaling Twilight Princess on Gamecube and even makes Gran Turismo 4, an already great looking game on PlayStation 2, cheap-looking.
Man oh man this ain't gonna be a well taken video. Conker is a great game imo, specifically as I played it early on my childhood. I can easily see how you would take it the wrong way and not appreciate it if you had just played it now (Even though friends I shared the game with these last few years have found it quite entertaining.) But oh well, not everyone can have the right opinion. (If its not obvious enough, thats a joke.)
This makes me wonder, if you HAD gotten to play it as a kid like so many of us did(atleast thats how I recalled it back then) would you look past its issues and just flat out love it like so many here?
Depends on what he liked when a kid, from what I understand he probably would still dislike, i remember experiencing the game when a kid and still not having any interest.
It's rated ‘I’ for immature, it's a smoke some pot, turn your brain off, mindless entertainment, kind of game & honestly I still love it! Sure now days if a game like this came out I'd almost certainly throw up from being so turned off by it. But this game plays with my nostalgia-heart's strings like a beautiful harp! To deny that would be to deny myself happiness. Yes I'm still talking about Conker's Bad Fur Day, lol. 🤣😂😅
I liked the really bad humor tho, however what really made me love this game was the ending it decided to give. Like the whole game was him getting lost while drunk, looking for his girlfriend only to lose everything in the end, and a final note of seeing him walk the right way in the after scene just made me so goddamn sad
It was actually kind of interesting to see Conker develop as a character at the end there cause he was so "done with this shit" and "happy go lucky in the scenario" type of guy from the beginning to now realize "shit, I've lost everything, life now sucks when you lose it all" which also emphasises the last scene in the game "I have all the money in the world, and all the land, and all that stuff. But you know what, I don't really think I want it. I just wanna go home with Berri, and, I don't know, have a bottle of beer. Hmm (sighs) it's not gonna happen. I guess its true what they say, 'the grass is always greener' and 'you never know what it is you have until its gone.......gone.........GONE" (Man, that scene was haunting)
You are not in the right age range for this game. It is in fact more skewed twords teens of the 90's. The ADD storytelling and poop jokes is perfect for the time. I'm sure if dad would have let 12 year old you play you would have loved it.
@@timothyhowe1384 I agree, alot of the criticism was unfair, and subjective. I had a blast playing this both as a kid and an adult. I never even owned it and it left such a positive impression on me.
As someone who almost qualifies as a zoomer and who loved this game, I think it's more about what style of humor you like, rather than Conker being a pure product of its time. I'm a big fan of absurd humor, and the game has a lot to deliver on that front, even to this day I strongly recommend watching the Conker dev documentary that's up on TH-cam, it adds pretty good insight on what the main devs thought about the game and how they approached and developped the writing and the joke setups/payoffs. If the game was as messy as they claim, it wouldn't have ended as the cult classic it is today, would it?
@@goldcreeper7376 it's got a lot of British humor in it as well, which just doesn't work on some people. Which, fair enough I guess. It IS a product of it's time, I see it as a good thing where I guess others like Sabre see it as a negative.
Bad Fur Day is definitely a divisive game. I played it a bit as a kid cause my sister let me rent it from Family Video, but never got passed the tutorial area. Didn't play the game myself till I got an Xbone and Rare Replay (cause I'm not paying $135 for a loose N64 cartridge). I ended up liking it a lot, which surprised me cause I normally can't stand crude humor. I still to this day will occasionally catch myself singing the Great Mighty Poo song.
Gotta admit Saber, for as often as you review things with boobies and potty humor, I'm shocked you didn't like this more. I was 18 when this came out and thought it was not only one of the funniest games I'd ever played, but the multiplayer on it was probably the best ever released on N64, arguably even better than Goldeneye. I mean sure, the game itself is old enough to drink now, so not all the humor is gonna land quite like it did 21 years ago, but I'd rather see more of this than the subdued cookie cutter, Sensitivity Player-Approved dreck that makes up most of today releases
I might be a little biased being a British 90s kid, but I love Conker. Some of the humour has aged poorly, and there's certainly some frustrating bits, but overall it's still brilliant. I think the variety works in the game's favour, it really doesn't let you get bored with any of the areas or gimmicks before hitting you with something new. Both the N64 original and the Xbox remake look fantastic for their times too. I definitely recommend playing Live & Reloaded, it's mostly identical to the original, other than some words being censored, but the improved controls and reduced tedium in some parts makes up for it. I played it last year on an Xbox Series S and it was a great time.
I literally playing this thing emulated rn,got past 60 percent of the game and man this thing is so bizarre and filled with humor that I use often, just wish it didn't had such a shitty camera
Wow, respect, you're probably the first ever person to review this game negatively! Each are entitled to their own opinion, so I give you kudos for not being positive just to appeal to the masses. Personally I love the game, tho I don't think it should be rated M, would make more sense if it was rated I for Immature 🤣 cos the humor is definitely aimed at teens/20's people, cos it's so crass 😂
@@bert7651 he actually gave that movie a positive review? That’s bothersome. I know people have their opinions but that movie is so inappropriate especially for little kids.
"NoOoOoOoO, IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST FUNNY AND SUBVERSIVE GAME OUT THERE, YOU CAN'T JUST CALL IT A HOT MESS!!!!!" "Yes, it was such a hot mess... * Pulls out Conker plush *"
I remember first hearing about Conker as a kid while watching south park. Thinking back the humor was about the same as most kids edgy humor rather than actual adults. I also didn't play it until I was an adult and just found it interesting, but I think if I had played it back then when I was like 12 I probably would've thought it was funny. Then again that's assuming I'd get anywhere in that game. Those teddies.. Those GODDAMN TEDDIES I was an adult and I had the HARDEST time getting through that level. There's no way I would've been able to get there as a kid without rage quitting. Replaying that war over and over was torture.
Fun Fact: there was originally a cut scene of the Nazi teddy bears dissecting a squirrel soldier what was messed up was that the soldier was still alive that sequence was more horror than comedy. The people at Nintendo at the time demanded that sequence to be removed so it was replaced with the two naughty teddies having a smoke and talking about the game
Look, how many games not only make a poop joke, but make an entire level one big poop joke with a climb to the summit of Poo Mountain and battling dung beetles who talk like the Beatles, culminating in the boss of the level who is a living heap of literal shit who sings opera about throwing shit? That's dedication.
I’m gonna have to disagree with most of your sentiments as well. I agree that BFD to play can be very irritating but Live and Reloaded smooths those things out very nicely. I’m glad Live and Reloaded’s merits were brought up as well as where its animation fell flat. I’m not a huge fan of the juvenile humor of the daytime portion of the game either. But the reason this game sticks with me as someone who played it as an adult is the ending. The fact that this game of all games has such a somber ending and it plays it completely straight is really something special. As much as I like Conker as a character despite all his faults, he deserved what was coming to him. Everything he does comes back to bite him in the ass. This game is interesting in retrospect as well considering how the Conker franchise just hasn’t gotten its footing under it ever since. Conker as the failed platforming hero is an interesting idea that I hope someone runs with some day. Compared to Banjo or Mario or even other platforming characters, he’s the red squirrel step child. Overall, I respect the game for being a technical marvel, the risks it took, and for a bold choice of an ending.
That ending is pretty haunting now that he has to live with all he has accomplished in the end. I even love his finishing line. "Its like they always say, 'the grass is always greener' and 'you really don't know what it is you have until its gone.......gone......GONE"
absolutely love Conker, it's humour still gets me to this day, that screaming shits line... I need to remember that for the next time I have the shits haha
I bought this game when I was just 10. Back then, I was too young too see it for what it truly was. In my teen years, I saw it the way it was and got so scared of the Nightmare fuel in it that I insisted my brother took it and never gave it back. But I recently saw a livestream of it, and learned it was not all scary. There are moments I can actually laugh at now, and I was able to put it behind me. And please don't laugh at this, I was seriously terrified of it and it's still the cause of my fear of zombies.
I can sort of understand where you're coming from, and while there are some aspects of this game that haven't aged well, but to say that literally everything has aged poorly and is a "bad" game is a bit of a stretch. It does have some aspects that do hold up surprisingly well even to this day, and while it may be far from perfect, but it still has its own unique charm that may never be matched, even if not everyone is able to see it. That being said, my hands-on experience playing the game was rather inconsistent, sometimes it's fun, sometimes it's frustrating, sometimes I'm not entirely sure, gameplay segments were pretty hit or miss on my end. However, I will admit there was 1 excruciating part of the game that has haunted me to this very day, quite possibly the most traumatizingly difficult gameplay segment I've ever put myself through in my entire life, and I'd consider it to be legitimately qualified as a form of interrogative torture... The Lava Race. That 1 part took me a total of 6 hours to complete, no joke, it was absolute torture! Pretty much everything about it pushed my skills and mental stability to their absolute limits. Like the only way to catch up to the other racers was to constantly move at top speed at all times, but when I do that it becomes way harder to control or steer carefully, which resulted in literally hundreds of deaths. Not only did I have to build up a crap-ton of muscle memory, but the only way to steer precisely around every edge and turn of the entire track while moving at top speed without crashing, was to have my thumb completely relaxed while on the thumbstick, which is extremely difficult when my nerves are constantly wound up to the point of blowing a fuse or something. Not to mention there was one point where I did everything I was supposed to and I almost grabbed the money and won, but I was just an inch off the final ramp jump, and I crashed right in front of the money, like inches away from it. At that moment I felt like I was having a stroke or something... BTW I was playing the Xbox remake, so I can only imagine what the N64 version is like... Did I beat it eventually? Yes... and I can say with complete confidence, that I will never play that f***ing Lava Race ever again.
The N64 version is much worse, the terrible frame-rate just makes the race that much harder, after getting burned after finally taking out the last punk cave man multiple times i quit and used the skip cheat and dropped the game shortly after because it kept crashing at that stupid giant cave man boss.
I actually was a lucky kid who got to play this in the N64 back then, at my birthday party even. Probably one of the best parties I had back then xD Looking at it now with an adult mind, I can definitely see at least two cases where the writing did not age well. In terms of gameplay tho, I actually did not mind the changing mechanics. Maybe it was my short attention span back then or not being able to focus on one thing, so this game changing it up every so often was pretty neat for me. Surprised you didn't mention the multiplayer, For me personally it was the most fun. At least the Free for all stuff
Legit this is the first time I've ever heard someone NOT praise this game. I personally really enjoyed it as a kid, partially because it has incredibly childish humor, but also because it was just a really fun game. Played through it a bazillion times alongside the rest of Rare's catalogue and considered it to be just as amazing as the rest. Maybe I'll replay it and see if my tastes were just different back then...?
If a Time Traveller were to go back in time, choke out The Blockbuster Clerk and Use His Uniform as a Disguise to Let Saber's Dad buy Conker's Bad Fur Day. I will assure you that, this review would be praising it's stupidly absurd humor instead of being let down by it
Conker's BFD was a niche masterpiece. The core mechanics are pretty simple, yet dynamic. That's why they're "context sensitive". Movement was a bit janky, but that added to the difficulty so you HAD to spend time on it. A lot of the humor is actually hidden in references with a thinly veiled disguise of "potty humor", making the experience an ongoing delve into what the heck you just experienced. It mocked tropes and parody, melding political satire and overwhelming chaos into a cohesive fever dream you could simply enjoy or mull over, depending on your mood. Microsoft's shenanigans during the remake really messed with the original's comprehension and experience. I's a miracle Nintendo was allowed to distribute this homage to adult gamers, and it's an experience I will never forget. And I still play it from time to time, enjoying the challenge and being caught off guard by things I'd missed in prior play throughs.
My dad bought us this game when we were kids. He didn't pay attention to the rating and no one stopped him. I remember LOVING it as a kid lol we would sing the great mighty poo song thinking it was just the funniest thing ever. We also loved playing the Live and Reloaded multiplayer.
This game is a good example of how the humor back then (and we're talking about Britis humor) can change over the years. Still love it, it's a gem from back then and if it aged on the controls, it's mostly because of how the newest games have improved, since I remember adapting to the controls when I was kid with only the mansion (after the bat transformation) and certain sections of IT'S WAR being annoying to me. Would love to play it again some time, too bad that making a sequel would be next to impossible, who knows how many would get scandalized for it.
The best thing about the N64 version is that the swear words aren't censored. Great Mighty Poo's song is still stuck in my head to this day. Being a hot mess is what makes it funny.
Really surprised Saberspark didn't like this one. I have no nostalgia for it and played it maybe 5 years ago. Both the original and the remastered versions and had fun with both of them. The only problem I had was that dreaded lava hoverboard level, but I absolutely loved it.
I remember falling a lot at the end of the level, when the barrel should be used to crush the rest of the enemies, i had some difficults with the war chapter, and retrieving the cogs took forever.
This game is golden. Some of the different control styles are ass, but then sheer unabashedness of it all is something to behold. The immaturity is cranked up to like 1000; it knows how stupid it is, and it fully commits. It is absolutely "adult humor for the sake of it", but the way it carries itself is great. It feels like a combination of an old Looney Tunes cartoon, before cartoons were for kids, and an ambitious college group project. I can understand *why* people wouldn't like this game, but trying to judge this game for how immature it is, or how disjointed it is, is kind of pointless considering they made the game like that on purpose. It's part of the charm.
Younger me loved the game, warts and all. Had many a great time playing it with my cousin who brought over his N64. The irreverent humor, crass jokes, quirky (yet dislikable to the point of wanting to kill them) characters, and parodies were of great amusement to us at the time. I especially loved the Saving Private Ryan war levels (the tank mini games were pretty neat; we hated the changes Rare made to the Tediz in the remake; the original cute yet messed up Nazi teddy bears were much better), the Reservoir Dogs weasel money heists, and zombie horror levels. The Matrix bullet time bits were pretty fun too. Yeah, the aiming of the shooter portions was super wonky and highly inaccurate, and the platforming jumps were often frustrating but we managed to overlook the flaws and still had a blast blowing up each other with bazookas and bombs, and slicing each other's heads off with katana swords. The versus multi-player was a main draw of the game for us, and that was something Rare did well seeing how they made Goldeneye, another big versus multi-player game back in the day.
Played this game for the first time when I was in college in the early 2010’s after a similarly long build up. I agree with most all of the criticism, a lot of the jokes didn’t land, the gameplay was not great, and it was a little heartbreaking after the legendary status it obtained. All that said though, yeah, I too respect this for being Rare basically taking the piss on their own tropes and developing something that is pretty out there. It’s certainly fun in concept and at times it’s still fun as a game. It’s just something I more appreciate than enjoy.
"I am the Great Mighty Poo And I'm going to throw my sh-- at you. A huge supply of tish comes from my chocolate starfish. How about some scat, you little tw*t?"
Im sure I love this game for nostalgia mostly, but there's never been a game like it. Multiplayer was a ton of fun back in the day believe it or not. Nice sandbox and high intensity when me and the boys would play. haha Sad to hear you disliked it.
I just played it for the first time at 25. I liked it and nostalgia wasn't a factor for me. I like that it's just a basic fun game. So many games these days have so much going on it's cool to play something that's more just fun
I think you have misunderstood the point of the game. Conker isn’t just crude humor, it’s a parody of everything in it. From the collection platformers to all the movie references, Rare decided to make fun of all of that. Hence why Conker addresses us the players as a cheeky way of saying “yeah, I know you were expecting Mario or banjo. But this is my game.” The summary of the plot you gave is… fine. Yes, Conker goes out drinking one night and calls his girlfriend to tell her he is coming home late only to wake up the next day in a field, with the goal to be get home to Berri. But then you also have the Panther King, the king of the land who has a table with one leg too short, causing his milk to fall off. The solution his mad scientist comes up with? Put a red squirrel where the leg should be so the table doesn’t fall. So they are trying to find a red squirrel while Conker wants home, chaos ensues. I didn’t grow up with the N64, but I could play this game better then Mario 64, so maybe that’s why I like Conker more. But the point of the Bad Fur Day is that everything goes off the walls crazy, while making fun of the family friendly games similar to it of the time. So I’m going to have to disagree with you on this game being avoided, I think it’s pretty fun
I can’t tell if Saber fully embarrassed being a furry yet, or if he is still fighting the urge to buy a fur suit, and is just referencing being a furry as a joke
What makes you think all furries even like "fursuits"? I quite like anthropomorphic artwork, but those things are creepy & I've always hated the idea of costumes that cover your whole body personally.

Yeah I honestly really enjoyed it when I played it later on
Speaking of humor how many of our favorite sequence in this game is the Great mighty poo
Well, I guess you're not wrong, and that's nothing but the truth. I've seen certain games like these, and they're pretty interesting to say the least.
This is the first time I've heard someone talk bad about Conker

Lol it's well deserved. Then again most of N64 was ugh
Which, in my book, just shows that Saber sticks to his own opinions no matter what others think , which is a really great thing
You play it recently? I went through and completed the single player and it was kind of a slog, I often got frustrated by the controls or lack of direction. Maybe we're more spoiled these days with games that control better, especially in the 3d platforming genre, but it's not what I would call a good Rare game.
@@AwkwardAbsol it’s my favorite console but ya N64 controls in general are super frustrating
wow never thought I'd disagree with Sabrespark.
If Saberspark had played the game when he was younger, he would have different opinion that he does now.
The multiplayer had so much to offer, i played the Heist mode a lot, the music and concept is really fun.
It was big funny
Loved the multiplayer
But when Wario has a collection of minigames with childish humor it's game of the year.
dude this is toilet humor is suposed to be childish for teenage audiences
I think you went into this game with the wrong expectations. you were expecting a serious mature mascot platformed game but what you got was a parody of all the mascot platformers that were flooding the market around the time Conker came out which Rare contributed to. the main complaint with Conker when it was first shown off was that it was too similar to all the other mascot platformers so instead they decided to make it a parody of one of the genres that they helped popularize.
Lol, agreed. They literally have Banjo's head on display and Kazooie turned into an umbrella in a closet.

Why am i not surprised? Conker is anything but not family-friendly.
That's the part that Microsoft was desperate as fuck to promote Xbox nearly back fired
Yet they allowed Leisure Suit Larry and The Guy Game.
Conkers Bad Fur Day literally took influence from South Park the best adult humor out there.

Wow really? You going to rule out the gore scenes? I’d say that’d warrant the Adult rating more than the poop level.

As many said, it really is a game for younger players at heart and what /they/ think a rated-M game would have in it, which you can clearly see in all the poop jokes and writing IMHO. I think playing the game with that mindset makes for a vastly different experience.
Conker's plot can be easily explained as being like a movie from The Hangover trilogy.
This game is amazing. You had to play it at the time to truly appreciate it now. First time I have to disagree with you on anything on both channels
I can easily see how you would take it the wrong way and not appreciate it if you had just played it now (Even though friends I shared the game with these last few years have found it quite entertaining.) But oh well, not everyone can have the right opinion. (If its not obvious enough, thats a joke.)
It lives and dies on its humour. if you enjoy the immature adult hjokes, then you'll love it. If not, then you'll hate it.
Thats the stupidest reason to like something
It's rated ‘I’ for immature, it's a smoke some pot, turn your brain off, mindless entertainment, kind of game & honestly I still love it! Sure now days if a game like this came out I'd almost certainly throw up from being so turned off by it. But this game plays with my nostalgia-heart's strings like a beautiful harp! To deny that would be to deny myself happiness. Yes I'm still talking about Conker's Bad Fur Day, lol. 🤣😂😅
100% I miss when games were more simple. So many have too much going on and way too much time requirement these days.
I liked the really bad humor tho, however what really made me love this game was the ending it decided to give. Like the whole game was him getting lost while drunk, looking for his girlfriend only to lose everything in the end, and a final note of seeing him walk the right way in the after scene just made me so goddamn sad
It was actually kind of interesting to see Conker develop as a character at the end there cause he was so "done with this shit" and "happy go lucky in the scenario" type of guy from the beginning to now realize "shit, I've lost everything, life now sucks when you lose it all" which also emphasises the last scene in the game
"I have all the money in the world, and all the land, and all that stuff. But you know what, I don't really think I want it. I just wanna go home with Berri, and, I don't know, have a bottle of beer. Hmm (sighs) it's not gonna happen. I guess its true what they say, 'the grass is always greener' and 'you never know what it is you have until its gone.......gone.........GONE"
(Man, that scene was haunting)
You are not in the right age range for this game. It is in fact more skewed twords teens of the 90's. The ADD storytelling and poop jokes is perfect for the time. I'm sure if dad would have let 12 year old you play you would have loved it.
Also I have played the port I feel like it wasn't that difficult on 64.
I'm a big fan of absurd humor, and the game has a lot to deliver on that front, even to this day
I strongly recommend watching the Conker dev documentary that's up on TH-cam, it adds pretty good insight on what the main devs thought about the game and how they approached and developped the writing and the joke setups/payoffs.
@@efrainamezcua7594 lol a lot of the praise is also subjetive
This takes me back to the “destroy all humans!” Era of adult gaming.
That game was so much better than this aggressively mid turd
I'll played this game to completion so Tom and Saber didn't have to.
I'm much more tolerant of older 3D platformers compared to them. :P
did you guys tried the Multiplayer(Eather XBOX or N64)?
I don't get the beef with the game feel apart from the TPS part, I'll be frank. That and Spooky is a shite level.
So what did you think about it Paleo?
honestly im suprised you guys didnt like it. I found it and still find it a blast. heck played it a couple weeks ago again.
Conker is probably one of the most funny, fun to play & charming games i have ever played
He gave Turning Red a positive review.
Its his gimmick.
I think it should’ve been rated T for Teen, because that’s probably who they were looking for
@@bert7651 he actually gave that movie a positive review? That’s bothersome. I know people have their opinions but that movie is so inappropriate especially for little kids.

"NoOoOoOoO, IT WAS ONE OF THE MOST FUNNY AND SUBVERSIVE GAME OUT THERE, YOU CAN'T JUST CALL IT A HOT MESS!!!!!"
"Yes, it was such a hot mess...
@@animezilla4486 Oh wow. I like how it's somehow too mature for an M rating lol
Conker: Tediz?....(Looks to camera) I hate these guys!
@@animezilla4486 "What if you were to give this game to, say, 20 intelligent people? I mean, what would that do? Let's face it, what would it do?"
A hot mess?! Conkers bad fur day is an absolute gem of a game!
if you think conker is bad because its plot is "all over the place" and "crazy", then you didn't get it.
Conker: Now logic would denote that something that drinks that is gonna get the 'screaming squits"
They actually let you buy it?!
@@noneofyourbusiness1998 Yeah, my parents were not that aware of age ratings. And the people at the Intertoys did not adress it either.
No judgment from here. I had a similar reaction to Mars Attacks.
@@GamingG4276 That's nuts. Granted, my uncle let me play GTA Vice City when I was like 7. lol
@@denverarnold6210 Thanks.
@@amongdrip8073 You'd probably hate Dino Crisis. Or Parasite Eve. Or Heck even Super Mario 64.
Tom mentioned the multiplayer.
Storywise basicly the game is Fritz the Cat, but with Conker, the squirrel?
If a Time Traveller were to go back in time, choke out The Blockbuster Clerk and Use His Uniform as a Disguise to Let Saber's Dad buy Conker's Bad Fur Day. I will assure you that, this review would be praising it's stupidly absurd humor instead of being let down by it
That game is a masterpiece. I wish there were more games like this.
And I still play it from time to time, enjoying the challenge and being caught off guard by things I'd missed in prior play throughs.
...did you just make the argument that it should be considered good that the game is a 3d platformer with bad control?
I've never liked games where you HAVE dump hours into it to have any fun.
A "hot mess" that got rave reviews because of how audacious it was back then for Rare and (especially) Nintendo.
I still remember playing Conker when I was 8 because I thought it was kid friendly, and loving it.
The game that went from being Rated E to Rated M
with a rated E gameboy color game
Should’ve been rated T
The best thing about the N64 version is that the swear words aren't censored. Great Mighty Poo's song is still stuck in my head to this day. Being a hot mess is what makes it funny.
Apparently Conker was supposed to kill himself during the ending when he mentions he’ll never be with Berri again.
Really surprised Saberspark didn't like this one. I have no nostalgia for it and played it maybe 5 years ago. Both the original and the remastered versions and had fun with both of them. The only problem I had was that dreaded lava hoverboard level, but I absolutely loved it.
Still playing this game to this day. The god damn vampire level is so hard
The war escape chapter is worse tediz with near perfect accuracy with bazookas
@@kobra6660 The hardest part of the game in my opinion is dodging the lasers as you make your escape from the bunker on a time limit.
I remember falling a lot at the end of the level, when the barrel should be used to crush the rest of the enemies, i had some difficults with the war chapter, and retrieving the cogs took forever.
The lava surfing is one that cause to me

Conker needs his comeback, man. Microsoft is sleeping so much on that and a new Banjo game. We need more 3D platformers besides Mario.
Thank god my dad is based . Best game I ever got on that system
I stand by my opinion that the great mighty poo's theme is phenomenal
Played this game for the first time when I was in college in the early 2010’s after a similarly long build up. I agree with most all of the criticism, a lot of the jokes didn’t land, the gameplay was not great, and it was a little heartbreaking after the legendary status it obtained.
All that said though, yeah, I too respect this for being Rare basically taking the piss on their own tropes and developing something that is pretty out there. It’s certainly fun in concept and at times it’s still fun as a game. It’s just something I more appreciate than enjoy.

But this is my game.”
The summary of the plot you gave is… fine.
