[19Bozzy92' POV - 3D Binaural Audio Experience #5] - ELMS 2017 Test at Monza

- In this video you'll see and follow me on a walk I take during the 2017 ELMS (European Le Mans Series) tests strating from where the actual GP layout meets the old Monza banking (300 meters before the braking point of the Ascari corner) till the Parabolica turn and then the last shot was taken from the outside of the first chicane.
Unfortunately LMP2 cars and the 458 GTE were too loud for the binaural mic so you can hear sometime a bit of distorsion especially when I'm quite near the track and cars are going full throttle. Due to this thing I cut several parts of the walk but that's not a problem since video would have been more than 30 minutes long XD
During the 2-days I've also recorded a few static scenes with my camcorder that I'll combine with the binaural recordings for a future video similar to the WTCC one ( • [3D Binaural Audio] WT... ).

-- What the hell is a 3D/Binaural recording? --
Binaural recordings are reproductions of sound the way human ears hear it. Traditionally, recordings have been made using mono or stereo. Mono uses a single microphone while stereo uses two, spaced apart from each other. Binaural recording takes the stereo method one step further by placing two microphones approximately at the same average distance that exists between one and the other human ear.
To recreate the best effect you must put the microphones in your ears or by using a "dummy head" (wherein a mannequin head is outfitted with a microphone in each ear) because having a real head or a head shape that separates the two microphones is what makes the magic works. In fact if a car passes on your left side the sound will take a few extra microseconds to reach the right ear and it will also be louder in one ear (left) than the other. This is caused by the fact we have a thick skull and spongy brain between the two ears and sound waves interact with the physical constitution of the listener and the surrounding space.

This reminds me of when I went to see IMSA sportscars at Belle Isle, feeling the rumble through my feet as I walked over the bridge at 8AM coffee in hand, I'll never forget the sound of motorsport in the morning! Those GM V8's really have some chest-rattling bass to them, and the Porsches could be heard miles away! Please keep putting out these 3D Binaural videos! I've just seen them at Silverstone during the 4h endurance race. The cars sounded exactly like in the video (apart from the 458 and the P2s which, as you said, are a bit distorted in the video). The best sounding cars were the 458 (it really had that signature Ferrari V8 sound. I normally prefer crossplane V8s, but this one just sounded so perfect that it got on top of my list) and the P2s, which were the loudest as well, and the P2 was very "backfiry" in the overrun and upshifts (the latter were sometimes so loud you felt the backfire shockwave through your body and if you were close enough and at the right spot you could almost feel your eardrums popping. Very exciting!). The next best sounding cars were the Astons and the P3s, which were very loud and angry (like in the video); they sounded exactly the same except in the overrun (the P3s sounded a bit naughtier). The porsches had a really nice note, but unfortunately they weren't loud enough to be fully enjoyable, and they were easely masked by the other cars. The 488s sounded awful! The only thing you could hear from them were a screeching sound when they were under braking (and you could occasionally hear the turbo fluttering as well), other than that they were the sound of silence. Overall it was a very good symphony and I really enjoyed watching the race. I was also really glad to see that there were still proper sounding cars racing nowadays, not just turbo or hybrid nonsense. On the same day I also watched an F3 race (they sound quite nice but they're not very loud. A couple of nice bangs and pops on the overrun) and a Formula V8 3.5 race (now THAT is a proper sounding racing car! Definitely the best sound of the day! I've never watched F1 live, but after having seen a lot of vids I'd say that they sound better than the V8 F1 cars on the overrun, but they're less loud and they rev less than the latter on the acceleration). I congratulate you for doing such an enjoyable and accurate video! Carry on with the good work, your videos are the best TH-cam can offer and I really love your binaural ones!

Unfortunately I can't do on-boards with the mic I'm using right now since I found it's very sensitive and it captures the unnoticeable pressure changes you encounter while driving (for example holes, bumps, depressions). They are recorded strangely by the mic which turns them into some sort of mute audio milliseconds. They're quite annoying to be heard with headphones.
But I'm quite sure other binaural mics don't have this problem so maybe in the future I'll try to buy another one

No, unfortunately. They only use it during the Monza Rally Show but they oblige drivers to stay on the "low section"
