    I've wound cables like that for years and I've never had a cable break.
    People say it puts "undue stress" on the wire but if you aren't buying cheap crap cables to begin with it shouldn't be an issue. Don't pull too tight on the ends where the actual plugs are and you'll be fine. Production cables are literally the lifelines of your studio, don't skimp on them. They need to be able to stand up to some physical abuse or else someone is going to dolly over one of them during a show and everything's going to come crashing to a halt.

      Also anyone worth their salt in this game should be competent enough to take most of these cables and remove the head, strip it some, and resolder it in the event that a cable did "break". Incidentally the only cables I've ever had to repair this way all have belonged to other people. Some cheap shitty TRS and XLR lines that couldn't stand up to regular use.

      The guts of a cable, the coil inside the insulated sheathe, is prettymuch the same across brands.
      But heads vary in fit and quality. You should try taking a few different brands apart some time and taking a look at differences in quantity of solder used as well as the precision vs slop of the connections being made.
      But hey tell you what, you keep doing it your way, keep telling yourself it's the only way to do it, and keep thinking someone must've coiled the cable up too tight when it breaks.

      Vidya Gaems I'm fairly aware with cables and their innards, I've also tried several different brands and many different types of inputs. It's pretty commonly known and tested that some expensive cables are essentially the same and in some cases worse than cheaper variants.

      Vidya Gaems just don't try this with fiber optic patch cables. "Minimum bend radius" is very important there :)

    This is how I used to keep my old console controller cables nice and neat. Plus they lasted longer than my tight cable wrapping friends' controllers too!

    Alternatively - Fold the cable in half and repeat until it's a reasonable length. Then just do a very, very loose overhand knot with the whole thing. One end will have a loop that you can hang, the other shows both connectors.

    @percival132 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    seems like a good way to do it. Especially for normal people who don't have to manage cables professionally. There may be better ways to wind a cable, but i don't really have a reason to care yet. I haven't found "cable damage" to be that big of a problem in normal daily use.

    It works and nothing breaks, despite what the other people in the comments section say

    • @sensator
      @sensator 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Extension cords are a dime a dozen, you certainly don't want to be doing this with expensive production cables.

  • @muck1969

    The other benefit to wrapping cables like this is that twisting is mostly negated. The downside is the center of the cable will retain some bending and won't lay flat, but at least it's not twisted. Twisted cables don't lay flat for the entire length and also kinks easier.

    All good and well for low conductor count, lightweight cables. Big no-no for long mains and heavier, high conductor count cables like dvi/HDMI/dp. And good luck doing that with any rf cabling.

    Holy shit this would get you EXECUTED in any post facility around the world. There's a reason over-under exists - cable preservation and lack of knots chiefly among them. This method will cause your cables to internally eat themselves alive.

    That is an awful cable winding technique that puts unnecessary stress on certain parts of the cable, it would certainly shorten the lifespan of the cable. See how when he unravels it the cable is deformed? That's damaging the cable itself.

      Blorp Weatherby I know some don't like it. The dude has been in production for over a decade. I would think if he was having cable breaking problems with this method, he wouldn't be doing it. Pechewwww

      The_HBK_23 It's not a matter of 'don't buy shitty cables'. It's about not tying cables in a knot shortening their lifespan. No matter how much you spend on a cable you are damaging it by tying it in a knot.

    To all the butthurt people in the comments acting like they've been in production for years and that this method will destroy your cables and kill your first born child, I don't care. I play video games and I could not care less about how many years my HDMI cable is going to last and how "dangerously twisted" it will become. I will however care that they all fit in a much smaller space and that they're easier to find.

    Lies, all lies! You can lay cables untangled and seperated with no possible way of going anywhere, and in the morning you find some bastard leprechaun came during the night to knot them all together.
