I definitely learned many lessons in the Amsterdam Marathon and the New York City Marathon, which I'm excited to share with all of you today. I do hope that these marathon tips come in handy as you chase down your own marathon goals moving forward. Let us know down in the comments if you're racing your first marathon in 2020, or any of the tips that you wish you had known before your first marathon.

QD: My main tip would be: don’t let the rush, the stress, and the adrenaline during the first 10k let you run faster than you planned! There will be crazy fast starters among the other runners. Let them go. Even if you think they aim for the same time as you. Your body is in complete top condition and full of energy after your training and taper weeks. You will think you can do that 10 or 20 seconds per km faster than you planned ... DON’T. The Wall is real.

After a dozen or so marathons I've learned:
    - Long training runs matter, at least 22 miles, up to 27. Train your body to be familiar with the distance.
    - don't lose weight training, use salt tabs to prevent cramping after long runs and protein supplements every day.
    - on race day focus, follow your plan with minor adjustments based on weather. This means proper pacing; don't bank minutes.
    - but take heart, few people heed advice. Most of us have to learn by trial and (lots of) error. Persist.

    • @bernardwhitmore7677
      @bernardwhitmore7677 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@georgeetboom7719 I'm not inclined to recommend increasing table salt. 'salt-stick' (the brand i use) is formulated to give you a variety of electrolytes designed to reduce heat stress and muscle cramping. On long-run training days I occasionally forget to take one before a run. The difference it huge! it's worth experimenting with - but in training, not on race day! Research it... i don't think increasing table salt very much would be a good idea.

I think it really depends on how long you've been a runner - how much muscle you have and mental stamina.

  • @anand54322
    @anand54322 4 ปีที่แล้ว +88

My learning: To not mentally give up post hitting the wall. Take control of the mind
Its ok to hit the wall,
Its ok to feel a bit tired,
Its ok to feel some pain in the legs
    Its ok to go slow
Its ok to use a run-walk-run strategy
But, its not ok to rest before crossing the finishing line
    Biggest learning for me.

My tip: try to simulate race day. So get up at the same time, eat your breakfast you intend to eat on raceday and do your long run at the same time the marathon starts. Also use the same gels/bars. I also have the same dinner the day before. Another tip, try to experiment with when to take your last drink before the race, so that you can go to the toilet just before the race and avoid having to go to a toilet just a few km in the race. Then just take a drink at every aid station.

    • @ceobonner

The drink tip is great, I'm planning to run my first one here in Fl, legends race. I've been training for about a year and comfortable with 20-22 mile range so can't wait to check off the checklist but appreciate all the tips through videos and comments, a lot of experience out there.

    2 tips:
    1) DO NOT “bank” time. No No No
    2) Pick up your effort the last 6 miles of your long runs.

    • @mikedickerson3944
      @mikedickerson3944 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

ocelot4444 It means to start faster than your planned average pace and then try to hold on for as long as possible. Example: let’s say your goal is a 4:00 marathon-that’s a 9’09”/ mile pace. You decide to do the first 1/2 at 9 minute pace. That would give you a 3:56 finishing time. So that’s 4 minutes less-4 minutes in the bank. The logic is now you can do the second half slower, 9’19”/mile pace. The problem is that you must use a higher effort to run 9’ pace and your fatigue is thus higher, and even though 9’19” is a slower pace you are too tired to hold that pace because you spent too much energy in the first half of the race banking those 4 minutes.

I ran my first Marathon in August of 2019. At the time I had only been running for about 9 1/2 months. There is a philosophy here in my home town that you run your long run at a 10 min run 1 min walk tempo, and you run your race the same way. As a complete newbie I followed this protocol throughout all of my training. Then the Tuesday before the big day I went out with a different group. I ended up talking for hours with a guy that was actually one of the elite local athletes in the race. His last words to me were "you dont know what your in for or capable of run it straight for as long as you can. I did that but when I got to km 37 (I think that's about mile 23) I got in my own head. I was pacing about 4 mins ahead off my "A" goal so I decided "you dont want to crash at km 41 and not finish, just walk 1 min and finish the race". I didn't need to walk but the fear of not finishing in the last 5 km (as this was the farthest and fastest I had ever run without stopping) I thought this to be logical. As soon as I walked everything froze up in my legs....hamstrings seized right up and I slowed down 30 sec/km from what I was averaging throughout the entire 37 km prior. I didnt bonk, I didnt hit "the wall", I stopped running and it hurt me big time. I still finished under the "A" goal but only by 25 seconds....with that long winded story for context my #1 tip: DONT STOP RUNNING IF YOU DONT HAVE TO!

I wish I would have known about Post-Marathon Blues before my first big race. My race didn't go well, even though I finished. But that wasn't what sent me down the tubes. It was the hole where training used to be, and the realization that the elation of accomplishing something very few people attempt turns into the feeling of alienation because most of the people around you can't relate to the accomplishment. By the second marathon I was mentally stronger and prepared for the post-race life. I planned recovery and base training out to six weeks post race, and the race went really well as did the weeks following the marathon.

QD2. Great tips, Seth. My key tips for marathon success are: Trust your training, manage your pace, and avoid injury. I’m a veteran of 5 marathons. I hit the wall in only one of them (Boston 2018) which was my second and the only one where I didn’t BQ. As for training, I believe keeping to a solid training program that includes tempo runs, speed training, some hill work, recovery runs and progression long runs has been key. Regarding pacing, in my last 2 marathons in 2019, I stayed with the official pacers (with signs in the US and balloons in Dublin) and got to the finish with relative ease. They kept me from going out too fast at the start, which is incredibly easy to do. I think if you’re a middle of the pack runner like me, arranging pacing with other amateurs is risky. Finally, I feel thankful and blessed that I’ve been able to run and train without pain or injury, especially considering I’m age 60. I don’t do much except post-run stretching and foam rolling. I hope all of this holds for my current training for Boston in April.

QD: For my first marathon, I wish that I had put in more time building core strength so that I could have better posture late in the race. As I started to slump and lean forward, it changed the load on my legs and gave me a real bad muscle cramp in my calf. So, despite tiredness and the tendency to slump, it is so important to keep good posture late in the race.

What I wish I knew before my first marathon is how bad you are going to feel at times beyond mile 20. I don’t know how to prepare for it and I can never go back to number 1, but after the second marathon I realized mentally I could push through so much discomfort just from fatigue, and I could have pushed through more the first time around. The distance really hits you at the first go, so just prepare for discomfort and be ready to fight.

Did my first marathon in late 2018, I was very thorough in my preparation with fueling and hydration. I practiced every long run for the 14 week block. Never hit a wall and negative split quite well. I think the wall is related to proper fueling and hydration more than anything, get that right and your golden. I still think there is a big distinction to be made from running a marathon and racing a marathon too. Just going out there to finish is one thing and you probably can get away with far less preparation. For a BQ attempt or faster, the devil is in the details.

I think your right. Ran a marathon back in 2019 around my town and definatley didn't properly prepare, I ran the whole thing but I hit that wall... took me 4:40ish to finish. 2 years later I trained way harder and feel way better about my first official marathon tommorow. Aiming a sub 4 hour time, but I think I can do even better than that without hitting a wall again... my best training run was 21 miles in 2:57 at around 8:27 per mile

QOD: Only done one marathon last year but my one tip would be:
HILLY: don't focus on pace, the hills will dictate that, so focus on running hilly segments in training. If your marathon has three hills dispersed thru the course, try to mimick this in your training.
FLAT: Practise pacing :) get those 9 mi /15km sessions in where you dial-in to your expected marathon pace, get your body used used to that feeling.
    Hope this helps?

With all the cancellation of organized events recently, I decided to create my own route that departs from my home, goes around upper lake washington, and returns to my home. It keeps me motivated and out of depression to have something to train for, and it will be my first marathon. I will be the only one running it, but still it will be a milestone for me!

Regarding gels... tip from the triathlon world. Tape the top part versus the bottom part of the gel pack. If you tape the top section, you end up opening it when you rip it off therefore you don't have to struggle. Cyclists often tape them to their top-tubes for this reason - you can imagine not wanting to struggle opening gels while racing a bike!
QD: As a marathon veteran - not expert by any means - my tips are... try to simulate the weather, specifically temperature. We often travel to race and the change in temps can throw off hydration, clothing, etc. Biggest thing I've learned, you can't bank time - you can only bank energy. You've learned this and touch upon it. It's so tough to negative split, but thinking you have time in the bank by running faster the first half is a recipe for failure. Like you said, mile 20 onward is the real beast. PR's are made late in the race and destroyed by bonking late if one runs out of gas. Oh, and however possible, get as close to the front as possible before the gun goes off. Dodging people is not only physically taxing, it's mentally as well which can send your whole system out of wack. Train hard, run harder!

Racing my first marathon (LA) just over a month from now! I joined a running group before the training block and received some sage advice from a veteran: consider making three goals for yourself (best case scenario, likely outcome, unexpected setback) so that you don't have an all-or-nothing mentality. That said, I'm focused on a 6:50 pace and hoping to qualify for Boston in 2021. Thanks for the continued inspiration, Seth!

I’m racing my first 1/2 marathon October 4th, 2020. I started running last December and am hooked. I’m 42. Makes no sense, I always thought running was a waste of time minus the health benefits. I was a skater (skateboarder). Ran 1 mile in Fecember and had to stop twice. Then 2 miles now I’m at 9 miles. I don’t stop anymore no matter what. Can’t wait!!! Love your channel! A lot of new marathon runners posting today. Best of luck this year!!!
A couple of things here one is not so much a tip for first runners - but overall. It will take time for you to develop the best marathon strategy for YOU. You can read everything that’s out there but every person has their own little tweaks they learn for themselves so experience and don’t be afraid to try new things for and edge. It took a few tries for me to dial in what works for me.
In relation to Seths last point try to close out your long runs say the last 3-6 miles (5-10 K) at marathon pace. It will teach you how to hang on in those last mikes when you are hurting.
One more in a shorter buildup it’s ok to sacrifice a bit on quantity for quality. Had some occasions when sat a 20 mile long run was either not possible or just kind of dangerous with the timing. Getting in a really good 16 at a stronger pace or Fartlek was the ticket to feeling strong and ready on race day. If I had tried to cram in 20 milers because many said it I am sure I would not have run as well.

QD: This year Tokyo will be my 20th marathon. Went from 3:57 in 2012 to 2:34 in 2018. Two tips - fueling and pacing. I think a lot of runners, me included, get those two wrong. Practising fueling is critical so the body is ready on race day and doesn't run out of energy = hit the wall. And pacing means to practise race pace, get comfortable with it and sticking to it through out the race. Because you will get uncomfortable eventually.

Hey Seth, love the vlog but usually don’t comment. I’ve just got to say while I understand I think you are kind of off with tip number 3 and I would replace it with my tip which would be: Run your race.
I was also a D1 XC runner so I know why you think the pace group is important, and it can be, but one big problem with a pace group is if you place too much importance on them you can run too fast or too slow at the wrong time. This was in my opinion your big mistake in Amsterdam. I don’t want to trash the idea of a pace group because I know the energy you get from it and how they can help but don’t be afraid to go in to no mans land where you have all the control. I ran a 2:22.07 at Paris last spring all on my own and I never would have done it if I was afraid to run my race.
I thought I would run like a 2:28 but after starting in the first block behind the elites and VIP group it took me about 10 miles to catch a pack of about 10 guys who told me they were going to run just under 2:30 even though I knew I was already a few minutes ahead of them since I started later but I felt good and pressed on. I ran by myself the whole time alone for a 9 minute PR.

b_brush yep I heard about those hills. They’re actually changing the course all around this year with the start/finish at WMU and then a lot will be west into Oshtemo then down into Portage along all the Portage Bikeway and Bicentennial Trails. They haven’t released the new course map yet, but I have a feeling that there will be some decent hills leading back to WMU with the middle part flatter. Will be interesting. Hopefully they’ll release the course map soon so I can try some sections, especially the hillier portions.

QD: running my first marathon in 2020. Somewhat unintentionally, in fact. Signed up for the draft for the Berlin Marathon in a playful mood, thinking I'd never get in. Sure enough: I got drafted.
I do not know what to expect and I'm afraid of setting goals. Finishing is key. If I finish, I won't be very pleased if I don't cross the finish in less than 4 hours. Secretly, I think 3:30 should be possible with proper preparation and a smooth race day. I've got some 25-30km runs under my belt, and also some medium trails runs (1 to 2 ITRA-points), so I've done 3+ hour runs. I've already met The Wall on one of those trails, so I know it's real. I wish all of you the best of luck! Thanks for the tips, Seth.

Ran 1st marathon in 1981 London. I wish I'd known that two double espresso coffees about an hour before the start, ensure that your glycogen reserves are preserved for later in the run and thus extend your endurance range. Even a standard, relatively weak coffee, before the start helped me to take 55 minutes off my 1981 time, in the 1982 London marathon and left me feeling easier and less sore afterwards. Of course, experiment with this regularly in training and adjust the volume/strength of coffee if it affects you negatively. NYC marathon in 2020 ( a lot slower than London 1982 !).

Mike Scofield Wow - I did not know this. Did it act as a diuretic at all? I spoke to the Maurten rep about their caffeine gels and he recommended double coffee before the race, plus a caffeine gel every hour. Something to do with having 200mg of caffeine in your system at all times during the race? I usually save my caffeine gels until miles 18-20ish, but am going to experiment a lot more now to see if I can reap more benefits!

I have four additional tips to add:
    1) Swallowing salt packets/tablets to replenish your system every 40 mins of running.
    2) Chaffing stick to prevent those annoying rashes and bloody nipples.
    3) Stay in the center of the road because the sides have dips.
    4) Start slow the first two miles. I've seen plenty of people burn out after mile two.

QD: Pacing - pace comparison tools are interesting but if you've never run a marathon, have a decent 1/2 marathon time and think you'll run your full at ((half marathon pace x 2) + a few minutes)....think again; really evaluate your marathon fitness and be honest about your preparation. How many long runs (18-22) have you done at marathon pace? If the answer is none or not many, reevaluate your time goal. I bonked after feeling great for 18 miles...ran 7:30 pace for 18 but ended up with an 8:14 pace marathon. Those were some really slow final 8 miles. My nutrition and hydration were great (i still think) but my fitness at that distance just wasn't there. As another point of reference, 5 weeks later I ran a half marathon at 6:44 pace. Since last October I've 1) increased my weekly mileage, 2) increased the number of long runs with final mileage at or below race pace and 3) decreased workout intensity to one repeat/threshold per week instead of two (adding more easy/steasy miles). I will take these lessons into my 2nd marathon Mar 1 and let you know if I learned anything.

Good tips. I did my first marathon 3 weeks after a half Ironman last year. My long run in training was 1:30. I don't think I hit a wall but by mile 18 everything was getting so sore I just couldn't turn my legs over at 7:35 pace. I'm pretty mental tough so never walked ended up running a 7:45 pace.
    My suggestions are,
    1. simulate race conditions with training.
    2. Don't run with music. Build that mental strength. You have to battle your head all day on race day.
    3. Bring enough gels that you don't need to borrow any. Sometimes stations run out.
    4. Always take some liquid at every station. Even if it's to swill your mouth or toss on your head.
    5. Be ready to shut the pain off. Further, anticipate sore spots early in the race. Adjust your form to battle it early. I liken it to a sinking ship. You might as well sink a bit slower haha

Thank you for this - I’m training for my first 50K ultra (road ultra - Calgary Marathon) and this channel has helped me immensely. Got new shoes because of you and I’m taking your advice to heart. This 50K will be my first race ever. I did a 64.5K “walk” in 2011, but otherwise - jumping into the big one.

I wish I had taken the whole week prior no running before the first race..the feeling in your legs after a week off feels incredible..now it's part of my normal routine

Awesome remodel of the Shoedio, Seth!
Also congratulations on furthering your running career! I’m glad to see that the therapy ‘break’ is paying off.

Hi Seth , I’ll be running my first marathon in April in Newport, Wales . I will also be running the Lisbon half in March as part of my preparation. I am proud to be raising money for motor neurone disease research. (MyName’5 Doddie Foundation) .

1st Marathon ever will be the 42nd Gold Coast Marathon in Queensland July 5. Flat course and I plan to break it up into 4 pieces and over weeks leading up run each piece to profile in my mind.

Just ordered some gels to try out before race day. About 5 weeks to my first half marathon (my first race ever!) & I appreciate the advice about keeping pace. I could totally see myself trying to blast through the first 80% of the race and then hitting the wall. I've made a better effort to track and maintain my pace lately, so I'm hoping for the best! My goal is 1'39", LETS GO!

Practicing the last 10k in training.
It was my first marathon last 29th Jan and target was sub 3 but when I hit the wall at 32k, it was bad very bad that I had to walk till finish. But till 32k, I was on pace and suddenly after a big hill at 36k, I was completely finished.

QD. Don't set off too quickly. You have time to build on a couple of slower miles early on. I went too fast in Amsterdam and paid for it miles 20-26!

My thoughts for 3:30-4:00 people for me was: 1. Figuring out fluid solutions if you don’t do well with the drink offered on the course 2. What salt, electrolyte powders suit best in different temps (separate from gels) 3. Figure out how to get to your corral for bigger races, often harder/slower than you think 4. Holding yourself back thru miles 10-16 when you have tapered, warmed up and want to go faster

QD (part 2): this is a well established rule but it’s one I learned the hard way: don’t load up on a bunch of different food the days before your race. Stick to what you know and what has worked for you. And try to avoid greasy restaurant food. It’ll come back to haunt your butt on race day

I've finished a couple marathons, and I plan to run the whole thing for the first time this year. My advice is to avoid under training and to avoid over training. That said, only you can decide what each of those concepts means in your training plan.

Good luck in Cork. I think I've run it 7 times. It's a nice course. There are a few tough drags between 17 and 22 and it tends to be hot most years but it's great all the same. The relay changeover points are a great place to get a boost along the way.

Ran my first half on Sunday at the surf city in Huntington Beach. Ran it in 1:40 with less than a month of prep. Running at most 6 miles a day. Definitely not a distance runner but I felt so good that day. Adrenaline/Holy Spirit really pushed me! Still can’t feel my legs tho
